Her dad had made several notes about the different factions, the town, the founding families, etc. and Kit was extremely grateful and intrigued. Kit decided to read up on werewolves first as that was the part of her that she was the most anxious about.

Werewolves are extremely proud, protective and loyal creatures who take pride in family. They are the most physically fit of the factions.

Werewolf weaknesses include:

Their mate (a mate is someone that a higher power has chosen specifically for each supernatural being. The mate bond is absolute and once the mate bond has taken effect, the two mates are drawn to each other and possess an overwhelming connection and desire to do right by the other. Mates have to complete the mate bond by marking each other and mating. Once the mate bond has been fulfilled, mates will be able to use their mate bond to essentially become one. There is no stronger bond than that of the mate bond. Losing a mate is worse than death as it takes a part of a person’s soul with the death of their mate).

They can be killed by silver to the heart, heart removal or decapitation.

Werewolf strengths include:

Werewolves can turn at will once they have come of age (16).

The full moon (werewolves are extremely strong, fast and agile especially in their wolf forms, but the full moon further adds to their strengths.)

The ability to heal

Physical strength (though not as strong as vampires when in their human form)

Their mate (a mate fuels a supernatural’s drive, determination, etc.)

Their pack (there are thousands of wolf packs across the world, strength in numbers and allies add to the protection of each pack. Each pack is run by an alpha and each alpha has his mate, the luna. The alpha is someone who earns the position of alpha or has the position passed down through blood, usually a first-born male of the alpha and luna. An alpha can be challenged for his position by another werewolf).

A werewolf can only be created through birth, a werewolf’s bite is deadly if not treated immediately.

Dragons are known as tricksters. They are extremely laid back, fun and mischievous creatures. Dragons are the strongest group of the four factions because of their size and hide.

Weaknesses include:

Their mate

Dragons can be killed by heart removal, heart penetration, decapitation, and werewolf bite (if in human form)

Strengths include:

Dragon hide. A dragon is nearly unkillable when in dragon form because of the thickness of their hide. Bullets, arrows and even some swords cannot penetrate their skin.

Size. Dragons are by far the largest creatures of the four factions.

Fire and/or ice. Every dragon comes from a specific dragon type. Depending on the type, a dragon will have the ability to breathe fire or shoot ice from their mouth, thus making fire or ice, depending on the type they are, something they can withstand.

Dragons can change at will once they have come of age (15).

Physical strength (though not as strong as a werewolf or vampire when in human form)

Vampires are the only supernatural beings that can live forever. Vampires are the most hated of the factions because of their manner. They are extremely intelligent, judgmental, arrogant and demanding creatures. They take what they want regardless of anybody else's feelings and are very cold towards others. A person must be bitten by a vampire in order to become a vampire. The process is very painful as the venom slowly works through a person’s blood.

Weaknesses include:

Holy water

The sun (the sun has the power to weaken vampires significantly, but the sun does not kill them)

Vampires can be killed by a stake through the heart, decapitation, heart removal, werewolf bite

Their mate

Blood (vampires need blood to survive. They can't survive on anything else, they can eat human food, but it does nothing for their bodies. This simply allows them to appear human).

The ability to heal

Witches and wizards are the most human of the factions. They are very in touch with the elements, nature and are the easiest to get along with. They are natural-born healers. This faction is the most liked and sought out of the factions.

Weaknesses include:

While witches tend to age slower than regular humans, they have human bodies. There is no heightened strength, senses, no healing, etc.

Their coven (a witch/wizard is only as strong as their coven/coven mother. When a coven’s mother dies, the coven itself is weakened until the coven mother can be replaced by someone the elements deem worthy).

Strengths include:

Access to humanity (while dragons, werewolves and some vampires still obtain a part of their humanity, they are fueled by their animalistic/soulless sides and can be very brutal as a result).

Hybrids are unknown. Since the beginning of time, any child born from two people who are of different factions have been killed. Hybrids are said to be the most powerful beings because they have access to the strengths of two factions without all the weaknesses. As of now, there are no known reports of any hybrids existing. If two people are fated, they must choose to reject the mate bond which would cause them great suffering and pain for years as they are essentially destroying a part of their soul/being or be together, but never produce any children which goes against everything that werewolves, dragons and witches want; (an heir). While vampires cannot produce any offspring, they do not relish the idea of having a mate from a different faction as they think other factions are below them, so vampires very rarely have a mate outside their own faction.

Kit looked across the deck at her mom who was still fast asleep. Kit had heard that the mate bond was a very powerful thing, but after reading about it, she wondered how her mom was able to make it through each day. It sounded as though she had to constantly battle the pain within herself on top of dealing with all the chaos that followed them. Kit sighed as she mindlessly twisted her necklace. She felt like a burden in her mom’s life. She looked back down at her dad’s notes. She had watched a few T.V. shows, movies and even read some books about vampires, werewolves, witches and dragons, but she was surprised at how wrong a lot of these shows, movies and books were. She flipped through the journal and found a glossary in the back where her dad had written out definitions for words that he assumed Kit should know. Kit flipped through the glossary and found the word marked.

Marked - When werewolves are mates, they must seal the mate bond by biting the sensitive area on the side of their partner’s neck, their mark; after biting the area the werewolf must lick the mark to seal it. When both mates are werewolves, both must mark the other for the mate bond to be sealed. If one of the partners is not a werewolf, then the werewolf must mate their partner in order to seal the mate bond. Once marked, the mates will be able to connect to their partner by feeling their emotions, thoughts, etc. They will be able to sense their mate regardless of distance.

Kit looked up the word mate next.

Mate - A person’s one true love that was chosen by a higher power. Every supernatural being has one fated mate. A mate can only be found once both partners have come of age. For werewolves they come of age at 16, dragons come of age at 15, vampires come of age when they are turned and witches/wizards come of age at 18 unless they are fated to someone from another faction in which case, they will feel the pull of the mate bond when that person comes of age.

Kate flipped through the glossary and found the word coven mother.

Coven mother - The leader of a witching community. Like every other faction, each coven has a leader who possesses the most power in their community. The coven mother is chosen by nature and unlike wolf packs which are run by a male, covens in the witching world are mostly always run by a female.

Kit thought about this and her brows knitted together in confusion. She hadn't been told who the coven mother was in Raven’s Nest, but she was extremely curious now. Kit flipped through the journal some more.
