Chapter 1: The Last Toast
"You're not a Luna anymore, Elara. You're just a scar I carry." Kael’s voice was calm. Clinical. He swirled the whiskey in his crystal glass, watching the amber liquid catch the chandelier light. The ballroom of the Silvermoon Pack was packed with dignitaries, Lycan nobles, and the glittering elite of the supernatural world. But the only person I saw was the woman draped over his arm. Valeria. The Lycan Princess. Her red silk gown clung to her curves like a second skin. Her manicured fingers traced lazy circles on my husband's chest. I stood across from them, my white evening gown stained from earlier—I had been in the kitchen baking Kael's favorite honey cakes. I had wanted to surprise him on our five-year anniversary. The irony burned like acid in my throat. "I heard you," I said quietly. My voice didn't shake. Five years of swallowing my pride had taught me that. "What do you mean, I'm not a Luna anymore?" Kael finally looked at me. His eyes—the same storm-gray eyes I had fallen in love with during the Rogue Wars—were cold. Empty. He looked at me the way you look at a faded photograph: with vague nostalgia and zero warmth. "Valeria is my true mate," he said flatly. "The bond was dormant until she awakened. You were a placeholder, Elara. A convenient warrior I used to win the war. But the war is over. And I don't need a weapon in my bed anymore." The room went silent. The nobles had stopped talking. Every eye was on me. I felt my wolf curl inside my chest. The legendary Crimson Fang—the warrior who had slain a hundred rogues, who had taken a bullet for this man, who had drained her own power to save his life—withered into a trembling pup. "You... you loved me," I whispered. "You said I was your salvation." "I said a lot of things," Kael replied, taking a sip of his whiskey. "But the prophecy is clear. The true Queen of the Lycans will wear the Crown of Eternity. Valeria is the one with the royal bloodline. You? You're the Beta's daughter. The ugly one. The one with the scars." He gestured to my left cheek. The jagged, raised tissue that ran from my temple to my jaw. The scar I had earned saving his life from a rogue assassin's claws. Valeria tilted her head, her ruby lips curving into a pitying smile. "Oh, Elara. Don't look so devastated. You knew this was coming. A warrior is only useful until the battle ends. And frankly, darling, you're not even a warrior anymore. You're a ghost." The first tear fell. I hated it. I hated that she saw it. I hated that Kael did nothing. "You took my son," I said, my voice cracking. "I haven't seen Kai in three years. You told me he was dead. You buried him in a closed casket and told me to move on." Kael's expression flickered—just a fraction of a second. Then it hardened. "Kai was a liability. Valeria's lineage needed a proper heir. And you... you couldn't even keep him safe from the rogues. You were a failure as a mother, just as you're a failure as a Luna." My knees buckled. I caught myself on the edge of a mahogany table, my nails digging into the polished wood. I didn't scream. I didn't cry out. I just stood there, trembling, while the nobles whispered behind their crystal flutes. Valeria laughed softly. "Five years of devotion, and this is what you get? It's almost poetic." She raised her glass to the crowd. "A toast! To Elara—the Crimson Fang. May her scars heal, and may she find a quiet little cottage far away from here where she can rot in peace." The room erupted in cruel laughter. Kael raised his glass. "To the ghost." I stood there, frozen. My hands were shaking. My heart was splintering into a thousand razor-sharp shards. But something else was stirring. Something deep in my marrow. A heat that I had buried when I gave Kael my power to save his life. The ember. The one I thought had died. They forgot I was a legendary warrior once. The whisper was quiet. Ancient. They forgot what happens when a wolf is cornered. I lifted my chin. My tears stopped. My body went still. "You're right, Kael," I said, my voice steady—so steady it silenced the laughter. "I am a ghost." Kael frowned. "Excuse me?" I stepped forward. One step. Two. The nobles parted like water. The heat in my chest was growing. Spreading. It was uncomfortable. It was painful. "But ghosts have a habit of haunting the living," I continued. "And you, my darling mate, have done something far worse than kill me. You've stolen my child. You've stolen my legacy. You've stolen my name." Valeria scoffed. "You're threatening us? In front of the entire Lycan Council? You're pathetic, Elara." She raised her hand to snap her fingers—a signal for the guards. But as her fingers snapped, I felt the ember ignite. It wasn't a controlled flame. It was an explosion. My spine arched. My back snapped. A guttural, inhuman scream tore from my throat as golden light erupted from every pore on my body. The ballroom windows shattered. The chandelier crashed to the floor. The nobles screamed, scrambling over each other to escape. Kael staggered back, his face draining of color. "What—what are you doing?!" The scars on my face—the ones he had mocked—began to split. But it wasn't blood that poured out. It was molten gold. The flesh knit itself back together, smooth and flawless. The jagged line melted away, replaced by a shimmering, silken skin that glowed with celestial light. My hair—brown and lusterless—turned white. Pure, star-lit white. It whipped around my face in an invisible storm. I looked at Kael. My eyes were no longer brown. They were molten gold, blazing like twin suns. "You should have killed me while I was weak," I said. My voice echoed with double tones—my own, and something much older. "But you didn't. You left me alive, Kael. And now you have to live with what I've become." Valeria pointed a trembling finger at me. "Kill her! KILL HER!" The guards charged. I raised one palm. The golden light erupted in a shockwave. The guards flew backward, crashing through the balcony doors, plummeting into the night. The stone pillars cracked. The ceiling groaned. But the power—the power was too much. It was raw. Uncontrolled. It was tearing me apart from the inside. I gasped, the light flickering violently. My body seized. The golden energy whiplashed, wrapping around me like a burning cage. I collapsed to my knees. My vision blurred. The throne room spun. Kael watched me, his face a mask of horror and greed. "The prophecy," he breathed. "It's true. You are the Eternal Omega." He stepped toward me, his hand reaching for my throat. "Then I'll drain you myself. Every last drop of that power will belong to Valeria." But before his fingers touched my skin— A massive black fist exploded through the ballroom wall. A man stepped through the rubble. Tall. Broad. Leather-clad. His amber eyes burned like wildfire, his chest heaving. He was covered in blood—none of it his own. He grabbed Kael by the throat and slammed him into the marble floor, cracking the stone beneath him. "Touch her," Drakon snarled, "and I'll tear your head off in front of your precious guests." Kael choked, clawing at Drakon's grip. "She's mine—" "She's mine now." Drakon released Kael. He turned to me—the woman on her knees, glowing faintly, gasping for air. His amber eyes softened—just for a fraction of a second. "You're burning alive," he said. "The curse broke wrong. Your veins are tearing." "I—I know," I choked. "My son. They have my—" "I know. I found him. He's in the catacombs under the Lycan Royal Palace. But you're dying, Elara. If I don't stabilize you right now, you'll combust in the next three minutes." I stared at him. This stranger. This monster. This man who had just saved me from my own mate. "Why would you help me?" I whispered. Drakon knelt. His massive hand cupped my cheek. The contact sent sparks through my veins—electric. Violent. Addictive. "Because the bond," he said roughly, "is already half-formed. You called to me when you were in that cell. You didn't know it, but your wolf searched for a mate who wouldn't betray her. And I answered." His thumb traced my jaw. "I'm not your savior, Elara. I'm your equal. And if you want to save your son—if you want to survive—you bind yourself to me. Right now." He tilted his head, exposing the thick vein in his neck. "Bite me. Drink my blood. Take my life. And I'll take yours. Together, we burn down the Council." The golden light pulsed, scorching my skin. The pain was blinding. But the vision of Kai—my son, alone in the dark, calling for a mother who never came—burned brighter. I lunged forward. My fangs sank into Drakon's neck. His blood—hot, thick, laced with ancient shadow—flooded my throat. The golden fire inside me clashed with his black ice. My body convulsed, arching backward, my scream swallowed by his roar. The bond snapped into place. And I saw everything. Every scar on his soul. Every betrayal. Every piece of him that had been shattered. And he saw me. My grief. My rage. The mother's love I had fought to keep alive. We collapsed to the ground together, tangled in each other's arms. The golden light faded. The black ice settled. My pulse stabilized. Kael was screaming on the floor. Valeria was running. But I didn't care. I looked at Drakon, my mate. My enemy. My salvation. "Lead me to my son," I whispered. "And I'll follow you to hell." Drakon's lips curled into a dark, blood-stained smile. "We're already there, little Omega. Let's make it bleed." End of Chapter 1.
