Chapter 1 The Encounter
Lila Marlowe’s heels clicked sharply against the rain-slicked pavement as she left the theater, her mind still tangled in the lines of her latest role. The night was quiet, unusually so. Neon signs reflected on the puddles in fractured patterns, bathing the streets in shifting colors. She hurried, coat wrapped tightly around her, eager to escape the damp chill of the city. Descending into the subway, she felt the familiar hum of trains beneath her feet—but tonight, the station felt abandoned, eerily quiet. That’s when she saw him. A man leaned against a steel column, his broad shoulders relaxed, yet every line of his body radiated tension. His dark hair fell carelessly across his forehead, slightly curling at the ends, and his eyes—astonishingly dark, almost black—locked on her with a predatory intensity. They weren’t just staring; they were measuring, reading her. A faint scar ran along his jawline, sharp and almost artistic, hinting at past violence. His hands were long, strong, yet the knuckles were scarred—someone who had been in fights, yet moved with controlled precision. He wore a tailored black coat that hugged his body, the fabric whispering against the cold metal floor. His boots were heavy but silent, almost predatory. Despite the danger radiating from him, Lila felt a pull she couldn’t explain, an almost magnetic attraction that made her pulse quicken. “Lost, or just late?” His voice was deep, smooth, a mixture of threat and seduction. “I… I’m fine,” she stammered, though her instincts screamed danger. He stepped closer, his movements fluid, silent, calculated. “Don’t move,” he murmured, and with a sudden jolt, he reached for her wrist. She gasped as he spun her away from the stairwell, gripping her arm like steel. “Who—what are you?” Lila demanded, trying to twist free, heart racing. “I think I know exactly who you are,” he said, his voice low, dangerous, and just… intoxicating. Before she could react, he led her into the shadows of a nearby abandoned train car, the door closing behind them with a heavy click that resonated like a tomb sealing.
