Chapter Twenty-Seven Outside, the rain had stopped, at least momentarily, but the air was still icy cold. Despite the chill, the sun shone brightly through breaks in the heavy clouds, offering false promise. As Chap stood under the faded canopy of the motel office waiting for his taxi, he looked to the sky, ruing the fact that the consistent sunshine which accompanied spring was still several weeks away. The cab took him to a car rental firm where he rented a car, opting for an open return date hoping, albeit a little too hopefully, that his insurance company would play ball and cover the cost. As he prepared to leave the vehicle rental yard, out of habit he checked the rear vision mirror and it occurred to him he was no longer concerned about whether or not he was still being followed.
