Chapter Seven Chap placed his glass on the coffee table, lifted himself wearily from the settee, and walked slowly across the room. He felt lightheaded and slightly unsteady on his feet. He hadn’t eaten since dinner the previous evening and the whisky was beginning to have an effect. He stopped in front of the large, open fireplace. The flames had died down, and he stared into the crackling embers. Above the mantelpiece hung a large, elaborate, gilt-edged mirror, one of the last remaining remnants of his long-ended marriage. He’d always hated the damn thing but he had never got round to discarding it. He took it down once, years ago, intending to get rid of it, but when he saw that the wall behind it was much paler than the wall surrounding it, he put it back again, opting for the lesser
