Chapter 9

“Why do you always interfere with my life? Haven’t we already made an agreement?” Seraphine hissed irritably. Margaret was always disturbing her. “Please, don’t drag my husband’s family into this. They have nothing to do with it! If you insist, you will regret it!” “Regret it?” Margaret whispered softly. She slowly stepped closer to Seraphine, a sly smile curving her lips, as if she feared nothing. “That agreement means nothing to me, Sera! You are still my child. God’s destiny is something no human can change. You must be useful to me forever!” Seraphine clenched her fists. She knew this would happen, because Margaret had never been trustworthy. That agreement had only been a way for Margaret to escape her previous troubles, to avoid the law that should have ensnared her after abusing Seraphine. “Listen, if you don’t want me to reveal who your husband is, then you must give this mother of yours some benefit. Seraphine, be a dutiful daughter. Don’t enjoy your husband’s wealth all by yourself. If you refuse, I will never let you live in peace. I’ll be waiting for you at home within three days—bring more money than the last time you gave me!” Margaret smiled as she saw the intense irritation on Seraphine’s face. She eagerly awaited Seraphine’s return with the money she wanted. Margaret left, abandoning Seraphine, who could do nothing—unable even to defend herself in front of so many people. Margaret was satisfied with that. Seraphine was mocked by many customers and talked about by her coworkers. They never imagined that Seraphine could have such a cruel nature—heartless enough to abandon her own mother after marrying a rich man. Seraphine’s eyes reddened, tears streaming down her beautiful face. She quickly left the café without saying a word or explaining what was truly happening in her life. She didn’t care if they thought badly of her; what mattered most to her was that no one would blame Ethan’s parents—or Ethan himself. Outside the café, Seraphine saw Arthur waiting for her. She sobbed when she realized that Ethan was waiting inside the car. The man who was now her husband truly cared about her. Seraphine wiped away her tears before getting into the car; she didn’t want Ethan to see her in such a fragile state. “Why did you come here?” Seraphine asked, avoiding her husband’s gaze. Without answering, Ethan pulled Seraphine into his arms. She didn’t resist; instead, she found comfort in Ethan’s embrace, which soothed her anger and sorrow. Ethan knew that Seraphine wanted to calm herself, and he knew that the woman beside him was fragile, even though Seraphine always pretended to be strong. “Don’t hold yourself back. You have me. You can rely on me, Seraphine.” Ethan’s gentle whisper made Seraphine sob again. “Don’t pretend to be strong,” Ethan added. Seraphine could only tighten her embrace around him. Seraphine didn’t know what to say. She could only be grateful that she had met Ethan and the Adamson family. Silence filled the car. No words were exchanged until Seraphine suddenly realized something—the road they were taking led to her mother Margaret’s house. Ethan noticed Seraphine’s shock when she realized where they were headed. “Ethan… are we…?” Seraphine asked, not expecting Ethan to act so quickly. “I told you not to worry about anything. Sera, Margaret has no right to threaten you. Whoever your husband is—if Margaret wants to reveal it, let her. I’m waiting for our relationship to be known publicly anyway.” “Why? Won’t you be ashamed—your parents too? Ethan, I don’t want your family to get into trouble because of me. I… I would feel guilty. Margaret will never let me go,” Seraphine said. Seeing how kind Ethan’s parents were made her feel uneasy about dragging them into trouble with her biological mother. “My mother and father won’t make an issue of it. If you forgot, they already know everything about you. Sera, you know my mother is even preparing a party to officially introduce you to the public—as my wife and their daughter-in-law,” Ethan explained. Seraphine fell silent. She didn’t know what to say. She looked into Ethan’s eyes as if searching for a lie, but instead she found sincerity and determination. “I… don’t know how to thank you, or your family,” Seraphine said softly. “Give my parents an adorable grandchild—they’ve been wanting one from us,” Ethan replied, making Seraphine smile. “Come on, let’s settle things with your mother first.” Seraphine smiled and followed Ethan out of the car. “What are you going to do to her?” Seraphine asked. “Don’t you already know?” Ethan replied, making Seraphine smile faintly. They walked slowly toward the house. When they reached the doorway, they were startled by the voices of Margaret and Olivia talking inside. They stopped and listened, and Arthur took the initiative to record the conversation. “Mom, you’re really amazing. If it’s like this, Sis Sera will definitely be scared, and we can extort money from her again. I really don’t want to work. Even if I do, I only want to be a model and become famous,” Olivia said. “After your sister gives us the money, you can do whatever you want, including becoming a model. You need to take care of yourself, and that’s why we need more money. Preparing you to become a star requires a lot of capital. I’m also sure that by using your sister, it’ll be easy for you to enter a big agency—with help from the Adamson Group,” Margaret said eagerly, impatient to get money from Seraphine. “You’ve really thought this far… Oh God, I’m truly impressed,” Seraphine said, shocking them—though they didn’t seem afraid, believing they knew Seraphine’s weakness: her reluctance to reveal who her husband was. “You came here with the money for us, right? Where is it?” Margaret demanded. “Sis Sera, you’re really kind. You should’ve seduced a rich man a long time ago so you wouldn’t have had to work so hard,” Olivia said with a sneer. “Why don’t you seduce a rich man too, so you can live luxuriously like me, Olivia?” Seraphine shot back. Olivia grew irritated at Seraphine’s retort. “Enough! Where is the money I asked for?” Margaret snapped. “Money? I never agreed to give you any. Don’t dream too far, Madam. Darling, how is it—have the police arrived yet?” Seraphine shouted to Ethan, who was waiting outside. Ethan stepped in with Arthur, standing beside Seraphine. “They’re on their way.” “The police? What do you mean, Sera?” Margaret hissed in shock, realizing Seraphine hadn’t come alone. “Sis Sera, what are you doing?” Olivia protested, frightened that they might be thrown into jail. “Madam, did you forget the contents of our agreement—or perhaps you never read it? But I believe I made it very clear back then. Don’t interfere in Seraphine’s life, or you’ll end up in prison!” “What? No, Sera? Are you crazy?!”
