Sages POV:
I was so excited by what I had just heard in the wash house that I had to stop myself from running all the way back to mine and Kali's room. "Kali" I mind linked her to see if she would answer. If she was working at the Alpha's Quarters then she would not reply. If she was at the Alphas Quarters she was stationed as the door greeter to his personal offices and apartments.
She had a bad poker face and one of our conversations nearly got her punished by the Alphas Beta Linken when he thought she was laughing at him. Thankfully when he had asked was she laughing at him and she replies "No sir Beta. It was a conversation with my friend Omega Sage." He merely reminded her that her job was serious and required her to pay attention to the job she was given. Had he asked what we were discussing we both would have been punished as we had been making fun of the Alpha Squad as we called the Alpha and his Beta Linken and Gamma Steve. From that moment we never talked if she was the assigned greeter.
We had a code phrase for emergencies, Indy needs our assistance. The Alpha Squad seemed to be a paranoid bunch. If the Alpha used his Alpha tone, commanding to know what was said the simple phrase would sound like a message any Omega says daily. We are what keeps the pack operating after all. We do the laundry, the cooking, the cleaning, and any other menial task. Unless you were the Alpha Squad, The Warriors, or the warriors mates you had chores to be done.
Most of the chores were assigned by Jerome the Alphas personal Omega as our pack was with out a Luna. It had operated with out a Luna for so long that no one thought to ever question what Jerome told you to do. At least Jerome tried to be fair. He was mated and had pups so he understood what most of the Omegas daily lives were like.
No one liked the Alpha. No one dared to stand against him. Jerome told me that I was too young too have witnessed all the evil that the Alpha had done so I do my best to stay clear of him. With the Blue Moon ceremony only one week away I have especially tried to not draw any attention to myself. Kali hated every time he walked past her. She said that on her last shift he had stopped as he was leaving out for the afternoon. She said he was dressed to the nines along with Beta Linken and Gamma Steve. She was sure they were heading out to the Wine Cellar, where they often dined with business clients. When the Alpha stopped, stared at her, drooled slightly, licked his lips, and told her one day soon that might just be her he was licking. He walked away laughing. She came home explaining in detail what she would do to that tongue of his if he tried.
Tonight, well tonight, I wanted to see what these witches' looked like. I have heard lots of stories and I have seen pictures in books. If we were going to use these two as our scape goats to escape then I needed to know more. Kali's not answering so that is a sign she is going to be working until midnight which is usual for her. The door greeters are often an eight to four shift and a four to midnight shift. Kali preferred the later as usually the Squad was gone or at least quiet. During the day Alpha business was always taking place. In the evenings everyone was at training or other entertainments. It was more boring but usually safer.
The pack has been at peace with the neighboring packs for quite a few years now and the few rogue attacks have been handled at the border before becoming an issue for the rest of us. As much as I hated living here under the discomfort of the Alpha. I still loved living here as most days were a simple state of tranquility. Even if the Alpha didn't make me uncomfortable I knew that I wouldn't stay here. My heart longed for some place different. Here I had no family. The Alpha had left enough damage behind in the past that the pack while peaceful never seemed to be at peace with themselves. Most of the elder pack members always carried this state of distress with them every where.
The Pack House was actually really Gigantic. If you were standing on the outside it was hard to tell its true size as half of it was under ground. It was built into the side of a mountain so it was hard for an outsider to notice the architectural design was as large under ground as above ground. Mine and Kalis rooms were on the left side one level below the ground floor. The Alphas quarters were on the entire third floor. It was divided between offices and living spaces.
My favorite spot was the caverns. Instead of building tunnels and underground stairs the original Alpha had utilized the hidden caverns and the underground river to provide a natural addition to the pack house. The water temps in the clear waters stayed warm all year long. I often came to swim there to avoid the wash house at bathing time. It was one thing to clean the wash house it was another to want to bathe there. I know how many scents that were more than just wolves washing away they daily grime.
The Alpha also had his own personal cottage at the lake on the other side of the mountain. No one was ever allowed to go there. If it needed tending to Omega Jerome tended to it personally. I am especially grateful for that now. That's one less place I have to try to avoid.
I decide I don't want to wait on Kali. I am going to head to the kitchens and grab a snack. I hear most of the pack gossip from the kitchen staff anyways so maybe I will her more about the two witches'. That's big news here so I know I am not the only werewolf wanting to be in the know. I have always ate away from the rest of the pack if possible. The kitchen crew is use to me coming in and fixing myself something after everyone has finished the last meal of the day. They know that I don't repeat what I hear ever so they have always talked freely in front of me even if they don't talk to me. I am ok with that. It allows me to really hear whats being said. There are some nights that I catch myself tuning into three different bullshit sessions going on at the same time.
This night was no different than most. Half the staff had already gone home. The other half was complaining about the slackers not finishing cleaning the kitchens before leaving. I grab a dessert plate and fixed me an small assortment of crackers and cheeses. I grabbed a small half bottle of water. I walked over to my favorite corner and sat and waited. The head chef, whose name is West, who is always the last to leave walks over pats me on the shoulder and tells me I am never going to fill out if I didn't start eating more. He was the reason I started eating here in the first place he had the warmest smile and the kindest eyes of any wolf I have ever met.
Most of my plate is empty and the staff has been mostly quiet. Ok. they weren't saying anything I wanted to hear, I sigh. They can't say anything as nearly everyone is gone. I was so wrapped in my thoughts I didn't even notice as everyone left.
I heard West walk back in grumbling. Snatching open the refrigerator he started making a few sandwiches in his freshly cleaned and closed kitchen for the night. He has a routine. This isn't it.
"Can I help with anything Chef West?" I asked him.
"I have to feed our guest. What is so hard about requesting them to be fed prior to all of my hard work?!" he exclaimed as he rolled his eyes.
"When you are finished I will deliver it where ever you need it to go. That will free you to clean back up and get on home. Its already behind your normal time so I don't mind doing that for you." I smiled at hi, as I started grabbing napkins and silverware. "What else can I help you grab?"
"These are not normal guest Sage. I couldn't ask you to do that. I am not sure they would even qualify as guest. I am sure you have heard the whispers about our unannounced visitors tonight?" he asked inquisitively as he finished wrapping and bagging lunch bag number one.
"Well, possibly, I was cleaning the showers when I heard talk of witches. I really thought someone was carrying tall tells. Why would witches come here? It's not like are a pack that have witches that are allowed to live amongst us. Also, I have never heard the Alpha having any alignments with any of the Covens either." I replied.
"No, not a tall tell. While unusual the whispers are true. The Alpha has them in the special guest quarters. You know the one thats not really the dungeons but not really a guest room either." He chuckled. "They seemed harmless enough. The tell is they are hunting the older witches Grand daughter. A young lady named Salina Falen. Not a name I have ever heard before around here. I have heard of the Witches' of Falen. The were a pretty respected name from what I can recall" he finished bagging lunch number two.
I grabbed two waters and the two bags. I hugged Chef West and assured him that I would relay I was ordered by the Chef to have the delivered so all would know if was he who had taken care of the order. And headed out the door
