Chapter 1
Lyra's POV Few years ago. I stared at the full moon in anticipation just like the others of my age .The only difference was that they had people around them assuring them that they would be there for them whereas I had nobody. I am an orphan. My father had left even before he knew that my mother had conceived and my mother was brutally murdered. The image of her dead body still sends shivers down my spine. My palms were sweaty. I was nervous but I knew that after today, I wouldn't be alone. I will have someone to talk to all the time. Someone that wouldn't blame me for something I had no control over. I turned to the family beside me. They were providing strength to their daughter, Janet. " It's going to be okay I promise." She was shivering just like me. " Are you sure? What if I die while shifting?" She was scared too just like me. We have been told stories of how many werewolves had been unable to take the pain of shifting and had died in the process. Their bodies look horrible. Bones sticking out, fur covering some part of their body but their human face still remained. " The moon goddess has it all in control." Her father smiled at her and in some way, those words comforted me. I knew that I wasn't going to be left stranded because there is a goddess watching me. " It's almost time." The Beta's wife's voice sounded. There was excitement in her voice. It was a day in which werewolves who had survived the shift would officially become members of the pack. Some would find their mates immediately while some would have to visit other packs to find their mate. Whichever way, I only prayed that I would finally shift and be allowed to access my inner wolves. " Strip and step forward." She said looking at the bright night sky. The moon was almost at its peak which was the time that shifting occurred. I nodded and stepped forward. Others gave their clothings to their family and friends whereas I folded mine and kept them neatly on the tree trunk. The excitement was real. I heard a cracking sound and a loud scream following shortly. I knew that someone was shifting. I turned my eyes in the direction of the sound. It was Derek, the Beta's son. I watched as his bones snapped out of place and brown fur appeared on his body. His eyes shut and when they opened, they were brown. In a twinkle of an eye, I wasn't staring at Derek again; instead, I was staring at a huge brown wolf. It was obvious that he was going to be Beta judging by his size. Another bone snapping sound and a loud painful scream followed. One by one, everyone around me shifted. I closed my eyes in anticipation. Maybe if I think of how I want my wolf to be, it will happen a lot faster. After a while, I opened my eyes to find out that I was the only one in human form. I closed my eyes again praying to the moon goddess but nothing happened. " I always knew that she was cursed." " She is the only one who didn't shift in her age group. That isn't normal." " Is she even one of us?" " She could be a spy." " Maybe the moon goddess didn't find her worthy to be one of us." " She is too weak. The moon goddess was probably doing her a favor by not allowing her to shift. She would have died in the process." " Unbelievable. This hasn't happened to any werewolf." " She is a witch." I fought back the tears as I walked silently to the tree trunk where I had kept my clothes while ignoring the hateful stares. It was obvious that I wasn't one of the moon goddess's favorites but she didn't have to humiliate me this way. I should have stayed back but I wanted to prove to the pack that I was one of them. That I was more than what they thought I was. To my surprise, my neatly folded clothes were not where I had placed them. I turned around and my eyes landed on Raven. Of course who else would have chosen this as the best time to prank me. I marched forward to where she sat beside the Alpha, her father. " Raven please, I need my clothes." I said and they turned to me. " Why are you still naked? Are you trying to show off your shapeless body to the males? They wouldn't fall for it." I ignored her taunting, having no strength in me to argue with her. I stretched my hands forward and repeated myself. "I need my clothes, Raven." " How dare you barge into my presence and accuse my daughter of stealing?" Alpha Kade growled and I bowed my head in submission. " I'm sorry if my actions disrespected you but I need to change and Raven is the one with my clothes." " Why would I steal your clothes? They are like garbage to me." A crowd had gradually formed around us and they increased as time went by. I subconsciously covered my body. The cold wind, flogging me hard and I lowered my voice. " Raven please." " Raven, give her back her clothes." Alpha Kade said and I was grateful. Raven jumped to her feet throwing her hands up in the air in a dramatic way. " I am surprised that you chose to listen to her over me. I am your daughter not her. Why would I even steal her clothes when they are rags to me? She has always attributed her failures to me. It isn't my fault that you couldn't shift. Lyra, stop trying to make me the bad guy here. You should be looking for reasons why you weren't able to shift. For all we know, you could be the danger that the seer had warned us about!" Tears filled my eyes and I hung my head in shame. " Enough! You don't have to talk to her that way." " Why father? Everyone here knows that I am telling the truth. Think of it, her father had left when she was conceived and her mother died while giving birth to her despite her strong nature. And now, she is the only eighteen years old who didn't shift under the moonlight. If that isn't a red flag, then I don't know what a red flag is." There were a lot of hums and I didn't need to raise my face up to know that more than half if not all of the pack members had sided with her. I refused to look at their faces. If I look at them, I will break down. I hugged my naked body and walked out of the arena more bittered and lonely than I came.
