Chapter 4

Chapter Four Lyra's POV I stared at the empty space. I couldn't help but feel that someone was following. The marriage between my supposed mate and Raven was advancing. It still hurts to think of him. He ignores me around the presence of other people but forces his tongue down my throat whenever we are alone. Raven will murder me if she found out about our f****d up relationship. My life was getting more f****d up! I increased my pack. I was returning from one of the never ending trips that Raven had sent me to the market. She was preparing for her marriage and it hurts to hear her talk about how good he is to her. It hurts so much more to see them together. I hummed silently, shaking off the feeling. For some stupid reason, the car had broken down and the mechanic was running late. I had to use my leg since I had no money to pay for a ride. Raven would definitely kill me if I returned late. She wouldn't care if the car broke down. Hell! She wouldn't care if we were ambushed. I felt my blood run cold as I thought of the word, 'ambushed'. I stared at the bushes taking my time to watch out for any sudden movement in them but when I didn't find any, I increased my pace. I was thinking too much. A wolf suddenly appeared in front of me and I rubbed my eyes. I was watching too many horror movies that I have started seeing things. I closed my eyes tight. When I open them, I will be met with an empty space but the shuffling of leaves laughed at my ignorance. I should have taken the other road but I decided to take this lonely road because it is shorter. I opened my eyes to see two big wolves glaring daggers at me. The madness in their eyes was unmistaken. Their tongues, hanging outside their mouths. Rogues! How did they get into the pack? Who let them in. My palms grew sweaty as I tried to keep my breath steady. The black one sniffed harder into the air, tasting my fear and I gulped down. I was done for. They walked towards me and I moved backwards. My heart, beating at an irrational speed. " Please don't hurt me." I begged as I moved backwards. Why the hell did I choose this road? Was my safety not better than Raven's screams? " Please, I'm begging you." I almost went down on my knees. But it was useless. They were on a mission and they were going to fulfill it without any doubt. I held the goods in my hands tight as I prepared myself for an impromptu race. They would surely catch me but it was better to give it a try, right? When they stopped advancing, I immediately took to my heels. I could feel them closer to me as I ran faster. I screamed loudly crying as I begged anyone around to come to my aid. But my voice echoed. There was no one around. Tears filled my eyes as I pushed myself to run harder. I can't die now and definitely not in the hands of some crazy rogue. I didn't know how long I had run but I definitely didn't see the log of wood in front of me. I was flying over it in a minute’s time. They were only a few steps away from me. " Please." I cried out. The brown one ran his long tongue over his lips as he stared hungrily at me. They were taking their time watching me, their prey. I moved backwards, my back hitting another log of wood. I was trapped. I closed my eyes bracing myself for a heart wrenching pain as they jumped. Only that I couldn't feel any pain. Has time been paused in my favor? I opened my eyes slowly. The attention of the rogues were not on me but on the big gray wolf that had joined them. Bless the goddess for sending someone my way, I almost cried out. He was two times their size. He was an Alpha! I watched as the two rogues circled him. He was way out of their league. Didn't they notice his powerful aura? Of course they did but as stubborn rogues that they were, they thought they had a chance because of their number. I watched as the black one rushed fully at him but he dodged allowing the black rogue to fall. He immediately jumped on the brown one biting a huge chunk of his neck. His front paw pressed into the rogue's chest and he pulled the rogue's heart. I squealed and he turned to me. His eyes, settling down on mine. The other rogue, forgotten. I noticed the sudden movements behind him and I screamed. He paused for a moment but before he could register the meaning of my screams and act, the black rogue had jumped on him. He pushed the rogue off him as though he weighed nothing and pounced on the rogue. Blood filled the air as he feasted on the rogue. When he was done, he turned to me. I could see the torn skin between his shoulder and his neck. The black rogue had succeeded in tearing a part of him. I wanted to tend to him. He bridged the gap between us slowly and rubbed his head on my lap. I chuckled and fingered his fur. He raised his eyes to meet my gaze. I instantly recognized him.
