Chapter One — Red Carpet, Wrong Name
The rule was simple: never be the most memorable person in the room. Celeste had broken it every day of her life without trying. She stood backstage at the Lumière Awards the entertainment industry's most photographed evening adjusting the final pin on a custom gown that had taken three weeks and forty thousand dollars to construct, and she did it with the composed authority of a woman who had been making other people beautiful for long enough that beauty no longer impressed her. "You're nervous," she told her client, a chart-topping artist named Zara whose hands were doing something complicated and involuntary. "I'm not nervous," Zara said. "Your left hand disagrees." Celeste caught it gently, stilled it. "Look at me." Zara looked. "You walk out there," Celeste said quietly, "and every person in that room is going to understand exactly who you are before you say a single word. Because I dressed you that way. Trust the dress. Trust me. Walk." Zara walked Celeste watched her go the crowd's reaction rising like a wave and felt the satisfaction she always felt in this moment. Not pride in herself. Pride in the translation. She had looked at Zara and understood something about her that Zara hadn't known how to say, and she had said it in silk and structure and exactly the right shade of midnight blue. Her phone buzzed. One message. No name. Raymond never used his name. He's in seat 4A. Don't approach. Just be seen. Celeste read it once. Put the phone away. Stepped to the edge of the wings where the light from the stage caught the edge of her her jaw, her collarbone, the line of her dark dress and she looked at the stage with the serene attention of a woman who belonged. She did not look at seat 4A. She felt Damien Hale notice her anyway. It moved through her like a frequency. Not attraction not yet. Something more like recognition. The feeling of being read accurately by someone you haven't spoken to. She filed it under: complications. The file, she would later understand, had already been thick before she opened it.
