Chapter 1 : Signed: The End of My Marriage
“Sign it.” My fingers trembled as I stared at the divorce papers that slid across the table to me. It was like a death sentence. Three years. Three years of my life and care had been reduced to nothing. Three years of being married to the love of my life have turned a worthless piece of paper into a single signature. The tears I had been struggling to hold back fell from my eyes continuously. “But why? I didn’t even say anything to annoy you. I’m just questioning why a woman is on our matrimonial bed with you.” I had met my husband’s secretary and my husband himself in bed. She was on top of him… riding his d**k when I walked up on them. Daniel rolled his eyes. “She is pregnant, Marilyn.” The room suddenly tilted before me as I furrowed my brows. “What?” “I am going to marry her. I was planning to inform you quietly,” he paused, then added, “Just sign the papers. Let’s not make things too difficult.” My gaze shifted to Vanessa, who was waving her hand lazily at me. A broken laugh escaped my mouth; I could not believe what was happening to me. “Am I having a nightmare? This must be a nightmare.” Daniel slammed his fist on the table. “Sign the goddamn papers, Marilyn.” I stepped forward, tears still rushing out from my eyes. “So… whatever we had… everything we had was fake and temporary?” Irritation crossed his face. “You knew whatever this marriage was. Do not upset me, woman.” I gave no response because I did not know what the marriage we had was. I loved him. I abided by his insufferable rules. No makeup, no outings, no speaking to men, no wearing of exposed clothes. I was almost treated like a slave under her master, but I endured it. I had loved him stupidly and blindly, and this is what I get. “When?” I asked, finally summoning the courage to speak. “When did this start?” “Before we got married,” Daniel began. “Vanessa and I had been together before you came into the picture.” I could not believe my own ears; my heart stopped for a moment as I analysed what he said. “Before… before we got married?” I questioned, my gaze flickering to Vanessa, who was chuckling. Vanessa crossed her legs under the bedspread, then tilted her head. “You know I’m really enjoying this moment. Don’t let her sign the paper yet, Daniel. She should stay and maybe she’d learn how to ride a man well instead of always complaining that she’s tired.” Those words sliced through me. Daniel had told her everything about us, even our bedroom activities. Daniel sighed heavily. “You were perfect for appearances, Marilyn. I had a good time with you honestly, but you were not to my taste. You were a suitable choice because my family needed a proper and perfect wife in my life.” I was not loved. I was just a suitable wife… for three years. “Those nights… that you did not come home,” I replied, my voice hollow. “Those nights that you would tell me you were busy at work, you were with her?” “Exactly. Now you’re sensible,” Vanessa answered back dryly. Daniel didn’t say anything. Of course, he wanted me to sign the paper as soon as possible. I shook my head slowly. “I followed your f*****g rules!” I snapped, then continued without hesitation. “I defended you whenever people say that you don’t love me! I changed myself for you and now… I can’t even recognise myself anymore…” “You are free now. Just sign the paper, please. You know I dislike drama,” Daniel said flatly. I grabbed the pen and they watched with anticipation. My signature was clear and fast; it cut across the paper like a blade. I flung the pen across the room and then looked up at them; their eyes were gleaming with satisfaction. Without saying a word, I grabbed my bag and flung it over my shoulder. As I turned, I realized a pain had carved in my heart. “Marilyn.” I froze. For a second, I thought he’d say something. Maybe he’d do or say anything, but I was wrong. “Leave the ring behind. You don’t need it anymore, do you?” I exhaled sharply and slid the ring off my finger. I turned back to him and placed the ring on the table before him. It was hard to let go; I had treasured that ring for three years, thinking it would guide me till forever. “Yes, I don’t need it. You keep it well,” I said calmly as my gaze met his. “It would remind you of how you throw people away so easily.” He frowned, but I did not wait for his response. This was my home… the ring I just dropped was the sign of my love for him. The steps I took were heavy and even heavier when I heard Vanessa’s laughter. Memories filled my head as I walked down the stairs. We did not spend much time together, but the little time mattered a lot to me. I guess it doesn’t matter anymore. I stepped out into the cold air. Rain had started pouring down; the sky had darkened more than normal, but I did not care. For the first time in three years, I was free. Or was I? My phone suddenly rang, and I did not care if I was getting soaked in the rain as I reached into my hand. Then I brought my phone out, and a heavy raindrop fell on the screen. I answered the call without even looking at the caller. “Hey, baby,” Lily’s voice said from the other end. “I know I shouldn’t be calling at this hour, but are you seeing the weather…” “Lily,” I cut in, my voice trembling. “Marilyn? What’s wrong? You don’t sound good.” “Can you come pick me up? I’m standing in the rain at the moment, please.” “In the rain?” Lily inquired, her tone laced with concern. “Did something happen between you and Daniel?” “Please… Lily,” I replied, my voice breaking. “Please, I am not in the right state of mind.”
