The nightmare
I knew that I was having the nightmare again when I could smell the dew on the forest floor, and feel the cold earth under my bare feet. Everything was exactly as it had been that night, except now I watched it happen from a different perspective. I watched as the faceless men cleaned the blood of my murdered pack from there naked bodies after they changed back to human.
I wanted to scream and fight back, but I knew it was pointless. There was a system to waking myself up.
“ wake up Noelle,” I spoke to my dream self. “Hold your breath, stand up, and be stronger than them.” It never got any easier to step away from the nightmare, but it was getting faster.
Before I opened my eyes, I could smell the blueberry muffins that my mom was making downstairs. It was my birthday after all, and that’s the tradition. I couldn’t let the women I called my mother know that I had visited the past again, not today when she was so excited.
“Bumble!” My mothers nickname floated from down stairs, pulling me away from my thoughts and I jumped out of bed. I needed to shower and pull myself together. After everything my mom had done for me, I wasn’t gonna upset her. Not today.
“Coming! Just need to shower!” I looked in the Mirror hung from the back of my bedroom door and noticed that I did look rough and shower was the right call. I had knots in my normally straight hair and I was covered in sweat. After one less glancing to my deep blue eyes I walked into the hall bathroom and prepared for another day of putting on a show. The Noelle is happy show.
As I reached the last step before walking into the kitchen, the smell of bacon and eggs mixed in with the smell of the muffins. There was Freshly cut cantaloupe in a bowl on the counter. And I couldn’t help but be confused. I know I’m turning 18 today but this seemed like overkill for two people.
“Feeding the whole pack mom?” I said as I hugged her from behind.
“Oh you scared me dear! Happy birthday!” I noticed she didn’t comment on my jab about the food, which was unlike her, but let it go.
“Thanks,so do you need help? I can make some coffee” I knew coffee was like gas in a car for us. We needed it to function so I walked into the dining room, where we have a coffee area set up as I spoke. The dinning room table was set with 5 place settings.
“Oh no, Noelle! Don’t worry. It’s your birthday! Ill-”
“MOM! What is this. Who did you invite over?” I knew the answer before she opened her mouth by the way she looked down.
“What if he’s your mate? We wanted to just check. You guys would be so great together.. if you would just try-”
At that moment the doorbell rang. There was no getting out of this now. I didn’t want a mate, and if my mom was right and he was mated to me, I would reject him. That would show her to stick her nose where it doesn’t belong.
I threw another dagger glare at my mom before taking a deep breath. “I’ll get that.”
No sooner then I opened the door did I hear the last thing I expected.
“Mate” Kyle looked like a love sick puppy.Well happy birthday to me.
