His bedroom was dark. He sat up slowly. “Who’s there?” Silence. Then the voice came again. “Akiro…” He looked through the window. The moon was unusually bright. For some reason, he felt as though it was looking directly at him. Akiro touched the glass. The moment his fingers touched the window, a strange symbol appeared on his palm. A silver crescent. He pulled his hand away. The symbol disappeared. “What was that?” Suddenly, his entire house shook. Akiro rushed outside. The sky had changed. The moon was turning red. People were running through the streets. Then something fell from the sky. BOOM! Akiro was thrown backward. When the dust cleared, a strange creature stood in the middle of the road. It had glowing white eyes and black wings. Akiro couldn’t move. The creature looked directly at him. Then it spoke. “Finally…” Akiro’s heart stopped. “You have awakened.” The creature attacked. Akiro raised his hands instinctively. A wall of silver light appeared. The creature was thrown backward. Akiro stared at his hands. “What am I?” Before the creature could attack again, a girl dropped from the rooftop. She landed between Akiro and the monster. She had long silver hair and carried a glowing sword. “Stay behind me.” Akiro stared. “Who are you?” The girl didn’t look back. “My name is Miyu.” She raised her sword. “And if you want to survive tonight…” She looked at the red moon. “…you need to come with me.” Akiro looked toward the sky. The red moon suddenly cracked. Something enormous began emerging from it. Miyu whispered: “Oh no.” Akiro looked at her. “What?” She tightened her grip on her sword. “The Moon King has awakened.” TO BE CONTINUED… ⸻ CHAPTER TWO — THE ACADEMY OF THE MOON Miyu took Akiro to a place hidden beyond the city. It looked like an ordinary school. But the moment they entered the gates, Akiro saw students practicing with swords made of fire, ice, wind and lightning. “Where are we?” “The Lunar Academy.” “Why am I here?” “Because you have Moonblood.” Akiro frowned. “What is Moonblood?” Miyu stopped walking. “A power that hasn’t appeared in over a hundred years.” Before she could explain, a boy jumped over the fence. “Akiro!” Akiro blinked. “Who are you?” The boy grinned. “Kai Takeda. Your new best friend.” “I don’t remember agreeing to that.” “You don’t have to.” Kai laughed. Suddenly, a sword flew toward them. Akiro moved aside. The sword struck the wall. A girl approached. She wore the academy’s black uniform. Her eyes were cold. “Move.” Kai whispered: “That’s Reina Kurotsuki.” “Why should I care?” “Because she’s the strongest first-year student.” Reina looked at Akiro. “You’re the new Moonblood?” Akiro nodded. She drew her sword. “Fight me.” Akiro stared. “What?” “You heard me.” Miyu stepped forward. “Reina, that’s enough.” But Reina smiled. “I just want to see something.” She pointed her sword at Akiro. “Is the legendary Moonblood really worth protecting?” Akiro raised his hand. Silver light appeared. Reina’s smile disappeared. A creature attacked Kai. Akiro raised his hand. Silver chains appeared from the ground. They wrapped around the creature. Kai stared. “Okay…” He smiled. “That was AWESOME!” Akiro looked at his hands. “I didn’t know I could do that.” Another creature appeared behind him. Reina destroyed it with one strike. “You’re too slow.” Akiro frowned. “Then teach me.” Reina smirked. “Survive first.” Suddenly, the sky became dark. Every creature stopped moving. They all looked toward Akiro. Then they bowed. Kai whispered: “Why are they bowing?” Miyu looked terrified. “Because they’re recognizing their king.” Akiro stepped backward. “I don’t understand.” A voice echoed across the academy. “Welcome home…” The creatures disappeared. Akiro collapsed. When he woke up, everyone was staring at him. Master Raizen stood beside his bed. “There is something you must know.” “What?” Raizen placed an old photograph on the table. It showed a young man. Akiro stared. The man’s face looked exactly like his. “Who is that?” Raizen answered: “Your father.” Akiro’s eyes widened. “My father died before I was born.” Raizen shook his head. “No.” He pointed at the photograph. “Your father is the Moon King.” TO BE CONTINUED… ⸻ CHAPTER FOUR — THE MOON KING’S SON Akiro refused to believe it. “My father is a monster?” “No,” Raizen said. “He was once human.” Miyu entered the room. “There is more.” She placed an ancient book on the table. “The Moon King disappeared sixteen years ago.” Akiro opened it. Inside was a drawing of the Moon King. He looked exactly like the man in the photograph. Then Akiro noticed something. A small girl stood beside him. “Miyu?” She became silent. “You knew him.” Miyu looked away. “I knew someone who knew him.” “Who?” “My mother.” Akiro stood. “What does she know?” Before Miyu could answer, the academy bells rang. A student came running. “Master Raizen!” “What happened?” “The eastern tower!” Everyone rushed outside. The tower was burning. And standing on top of it was a masked warrior. The warrior looked directly at Akiro. Then removed the mask. Akiro froze. The face beneath it was identical to his. He landed without a sound. “My name is Akuma Ren.” Raizen immediately attacked. Akuma blocked the strike. “Still protecting him?” Raizen’s eyes widened. “You shouldn’t be alive.” Akuma laughed. “Neither should Father.” Akiro stepped forward. “Where is he?” Akuma looked at him. “Do you really want to know?” “Yes.” “Then come with me.” Miyu grabbed Akiro’s arm. “Don’t.” Akuma smiled. “She hasn’t told you, has she?” Akiro looked at Miyu. “Told me what?” Akuma walked backward. “Ask her why your mother disappeared.” Miyu’s face went pale. Akuma vanished into the darkness. Akiro turned toward Miyu. “What does he mean?” She didn’t answer. Akiro’s silver symbol appeared on his hand. But this time, it wasn’t glowing silver. It was black. His father’s voice explained that the Eclipse power was not evil. It was simply uncontrollable. His mother had sealed it inside Akiro. A massive black aura surrounded him. Kai shouted: “Akiro!” Akiro opened his eyes. They were completely black. He looked at his friends. But there was no recognition in his face. Akuma smiled. “Welcome back…” Then Akiro raised his hand. The entire academy disappeared beneath a wave of darkness. The boy looked about five years old. “Who are you?” The boy smiled. “You.” Akiro stared. “What?” “I am the part of you that remembers.” “Remembers what?” The boy pointed toward a door. Behind it was a memory. Akiro opened it. He saw his mother holding him as a baby. His father stood beside her. Akuma was there too. They weren’t fighting. They were a family. Then the door opened again. Akiro’s mother was crying. His father said: “If I stay, the Eclipse will consume me.” She shook her head. “Then we’ll seal it.” His father looked at baby Akiro. “No.” The vision ended. Akiro understood. His father hadn’t abandoned them. He had sacrificed himself. But there was one thing he still couldn’t explain. Why had Akuma turned against them? Miyu walked toward them. “There is one final truth.” “What?” Miyu took off a necklace. Inside was a tiny photograph. Akiro’s mother. Standing beside someone. Akiro stared. The person beside her was not his father. It was the man who had created the Eclipse power. The person who had started everything. Master Raizen. Akiro slowly turned. Raizen was standing behind them. He smiled. “Now you know.” Akiro’s hand began glowing. “Why?” Raizen raised his sword. “Because the Eclipse was never meant to destroy the world.” He smiled. “It was meant to rule it.” The moon above the academy turned completely black.
