Elayne sat in the meeting room at the school board. It was supposed to be her day, the one she"d been working toward for years. She felt nothing but a hollow ache in her chest. "Tell us about yourself, Mrs.…" Ted Heath, who had been hired a year after Elayne, looked down again at the stack of papers set before. "I beg your pardon, Miss Jade.” MissElayne couldn"t even muster a single huff of anger at the man. She was all tapped out of the emotion. Even if she could get upset, she wouldn"t waste it on the likes of the tall, thin man whose wedding ring kept slipping up and down his boney left ring finger. He knew her. All of the men and women sitting across the table knew her. This was the first time they’d actually paid attention to her. And it was all because of the ring on her finger.
