THE SCENT OF DESTINY
Omegas weren't meant to be. But Luna Rivers had always been one, hiding who she was in a world that thought her kind was dead. SUPPRESSANTS. BLOCKER OF SCENTS. DISTANCE. LIES. Anything to keep her secret safe. Until tonight. Seattle's supernatural district wasn't safe for any omega after dark, and she had been dumb enough to take a shortcut. She pressed her back against a cold brick wall, and her heart raced as footsteps got closer. The two pills she had taken that morning were not working. Her smell was coming through. Every alpha within five miles would feel it. "I can smell you, little omega." The voice was rough and hungry. "There's no point in hiding now." Luna closed her eyes tightly. The phone is dead. Alley with no people. She had no choice but to be quiet. She pushed herself deeper between two dumpsters, willing herself to be invisible. "Found you." A huge hand grabbed her wrist and pulled her out of the shadows. He was at least six and a half feet tall and had big muscles from moving around a lot. The streetlight was dim, but the amber eyes shone. His canines were already long. "Please," she said in a whisper, hating how small her voice sounded. "I just want to go home." "Home?" He laughed, and the sound made her nerves feel bad. "Sweetheart, you smell like you're about to get hot." When nature calls, an unmated omega can't just go home. His grip got stronger until her bones rubbed together. She was always short, only five feet four inches tall. This alpha could break her wrist without even trying. "Let her go." The new voice cut through the alley like a knife deep and commanding. The alpha who was holding Luna spun around, taking her with him. A different man came out of the alley from the other side. This one was not the same. He was taller than her attacker, but thinner, with dark hair falling across his forehead and stormy grey eyes. Violence dressed up in fancy clothes. She could feel his presence like a physical force even from twenty feet away. Her captor yelled, "This isn't your business, Blackwood." "I found her first." Blackwood. People in the diner had said that name in a quiet voice. The Shadow Moon Pack's alpha was known for being angry and for using blood to solve problems. Asher Blackwood took another step forward and said, "Everything in my territory is my business." "And you're in my space." "The lines changed after the Council meeting last month." This block is owned by Asher moved so quickly that Luna's eyes couldn't keep up. He was twenty feet away one second, and the next his hand was around the other alpha's throat. He was so dominant that she could taste it on her tongue. He said quietly, "The limits are what I say they are." "And I say you're trespassing." The alpha let go of Luna's wrist and raised his hands in surrender. "Okay, okay. But the omega stays.” The smell of her is driving all the men in the area crazy. Someone needs to take her before she starts a war. For the first time, Asher's eyes moved to Luna. Something in her chest snapped shut, quickly and powerfully, like being hit by lightning. As he smelt her, his pupils got bigger. "Go," he told the other alpha, never taking his eyes off of her. "Now." The werewolf that had been fired stumbled back and gave Luna a look that said this wasn't over. Then it disappeared into the night. Be quiet. Her skin felt too tight, and her body reacted to this alpha in ways that scared her. Asher said, "You're in heat," and his voice got rougher. "When did it begin?" "This morning. But I'm on suppressants, and I shouldn't be— " ”Suppressants don't work on real heat." He moved closer to her, but then stopped. "How old are you?" "Twenty-two." His face changed. "And you've never had a heat before this?" She shook her head. There was a lot of energy in the space between them. Every instinct screamed at her to either run or submit, and she wasn’t sure which impulse was stronger. He whispered, "That's impossible." "Unless..." His eyes got a little bigger. "What's your title?" "I don't have one officially." When I was sixteen, the tests didn't give me any clear answers. But they both knew what she was. Omegas weren't just hard to find; they were supposed to be gone. Asher said, "You need to come with me," and then he took off his jacket and held it out. “This scent will have every pack in the city hunting you within hours.” Luna looked at the jacket that was being offered to her, knowing that taking it would change everything. She said, "I can take care of myself," even though another wave of heat went through her body. Asher's face got darker. "Can you?" “Because from where I’m standing, you were about to be claimed by a rogue alpha in an alley behind a dumpster.” The words hurt because they were true. Her body was betraying her, showing every strong man nearby that she could have children. She asked, "What do you want in return?" Something flickered in his eyes, a flash of pain so brief she might have imagined it. "Nothing you don't want to give." Before she could say anything, she smelt something else. It was different from Asher's cold mountain air and pine. It was wild and untamed, like a storm over the ocean. A third werewolf materialized at the mouth of the alley, and Luna’s knees nearly buckled as another wave of impossible recognition crashed over her. This alpha was shorter than Asher but wider. He had golden skin and messy hair tied back in a bun. Worn leather and denim clung to him. He moved like he’d never met a rule he didn’t want to break. The new person said, "Well, well," with a slight accent that she couldn't place. "Looks like I'm not the only one who smelt that on the wind." Asher tensed, territorial instinct spiking. “Stormheart. You're far away from where you usually hunt.” "Blackwood, so are you." Kai Stormheart’s gaze settled on Luna, and she felt her breath catch. “Though I can see why you might make an exception.” The air between the two alphas was full of barely controlled anger. Luna realised she was in the middle of a possible bloodbath, and her scent rose into the night like a flare. “This doesn’t concern you,” Asher said, stepping slightly in front of her. Kai laughed, but it wasn't funny. "An omega in heat who isn't mated is a problem for every alpha in the area. Especially when she smells like she does.” Luna's heart raced in her ears. Two strong alphas. One dark street. Her body betraying her at the worst possible time. And then she felt it: sharper, heavier, and more dangerous than either of theirs. Claws scraped against brick from the rooftops above. There was someone else here. Asher's head jerked up. "We're not alone." Kai's smile went away. "Looks like your area is going to get busy, Blackwood." The growl that came next didn't come from either alpha. Luna's stomach sank. That's when the third shadow came into the alley.
