CHAPTER ONE
"s**t! " I cursed as I fell off my bed, my whole body tangled in my sheets and duvet. I tried to get myself untangled which proved to be a b***h in itself and I doubted I'd make it to the library in time, seeing as I was already thirty minutes late. Releasing a sigh of relief after I had managed the herculean task of getting my beddings off me, I rushed to the bathroom and managed to make it with ten minutes to spare. My hair was a tangled curly mess, not that I had time to make it look presentable, considering it was as thick as the sss forest. I quickly put on a black tank top, a pair of grey sweats, and my only other pair of sneakers (my white Adidas with black stripes). I then grabbed my laptop backpack and ran out of my small apartment. Breakfast would be sorted later. Since I didn't live far from campus, it was only a short run of ten minutes. It also helped that the library was the first building on campus so it was an even shorter run. I bumped into a couple of students who were leaving the library and I mumbled a sorry as I quickly brushed past them and entered the library, out of breath. Mrs. Wheeler, the librarian turned towards me and glared at me but I could honestly care less about her icy scary glare that always sent shivers down my spine. "Sorry, Mrs. Wheeler. " I told the grumpy old English woman and smiled tightly at her before passing her and making my way to where I knew my best friend was probably waiting to kill me. A couple of students were scattered all over the huge state-of-the-art library. Our school library was considered the best in the whole country and one of the best in Europe, if not the whole world. However, every time I was there I always felt scary weird, like one of those mysterious haunted castles that held deadly secrets. And although I was curious to see what secrets it held, I also loved my life. If it had secrets there's a reason why they are still secrets. Besides, archeologists are there for that reason. And last I checked I was doing diplomacy and international relations. My best friend was easy to spot. Not only because of the fact that she was sitting in our usual spot, but she was also the only one murdering me with her eyes and plotting ways to hide the evidence and her crime. Elise Mbula or Liz as she liked being referred to most times( and by most I mean all the time. She hated her Elise name and only allowed her mum and grandparents to call her that) had been my best friend since the first day I joined their highschool. We instantly clicked and had been inseparable ever since even though we had been met by some tough obstacles. I was the one who came up with the idea to learn German so we could get scholarships to come here. And the icing on the cake was the fact that we also wanted to pursue the same career. We didn't live together as she had gotten lucky to get a room in one of the hostels on campus and I had missed. But seeing as it was only the first semester, we decided that we would look for a bigger apartment off-campus and move in together seeing as the apartment I lived in was super small. In fact, I had gotten lucky with that one. She stood up, her hands on her hips in akimbo as she glared at my approaching figure. She was slightly taller than me, her being five-seven in height while I was a proud five-five. Her hair was also longer but she had plaited her hair in medium length medium size braids that she had tied up into a neat bun. She had never been a huge fan of makeup. Her face was clear apart from her minty lip balm. At times people said we were sisters cause we looked alike, probably cause we had stayed together for long, however, we differed in many ways. While she had large double ds, I had small perky breasts. I was however more curvy downstairs, being blessed with hips and an averagely huge ass, she had thick thighs and a slightly flat ass. Our facial features also varied, whereas she had huge doe-like eyes, I had big slightly slanted eyes that. However, we didn't only differ physically but also personality-wise. She had a more Bohemian sense of lifestyle while I was more of a mixture of all kinds of lifestyle. I was the crazy one between the two of us, and I had always thought I was a bad influence on her because I made her stray from her goody-two-shoes personality but at the same time thought I was making her have an adventurous spirit to experience what life had to offer when we had the chance. Let's not forget she was also a sucker for love and romance while I didn't believe love existed, instead believed in understanding one another and tolerance to make any relationship work. "You finally decide to grace me with your presence. "She scolded lowly so that we couldn't disturb others in the library. "Oh give me a break. It's not like you've never been late before for our study meetings. "I replied going to her side and hugging her which she returned stiffly as she was still mad at me. "Only difference is I've never been a whole hour late! "She scolded raising her voice a bit which earned us a few scolding glares. I smiled at them apologetically and waved them to get back to whatever they were doing. "I slept late yesterday, okay? " I explained sitting down opposite her and began preparing for our group discussion. "I bet you were watching Supernatural again... "She said rolling her eyes. "Can you blame me? The Winchester boys are practically my oxygen, I can't live without them. And, Actually, I was catching up on the latest Game of Thrones episode that came out last night."I told her finally starting my laptop up. There are certain things I value to life itself. Supernatural, Game of Thrones, Football or what Americans call Soccer (which has never made any sense to me why they just can't call it football and call American football, American Rugby), Food, Whiskey, Cigarettes, and Family. And of course my best friend but she's more like family so that doesn't count. "And let me guess, the curiosity was burning your insides alive and you just had to watch it. "She said again rolling her eyes. "Woman, at this rate your eyes will be stuck at the back of your head if you keep rolling them." I warned making her smile a bit. "You went with number one, trying to change the subject, so predictable. "She said clicking her tongue. "Awww you know me so well... I'd hug you but we ain't got much time to research for this annoying topic and let's not forget I have to go babysit at one. "I told her. "But we can. Oh wait, someone is an hour late. " "Jeez can't you just drop it? "I asked throwing my hands up in frustration. "Nope. " "I'll buy lunch?" I tried with a smile and she instantly brightened up. "Deal. "She replied and we got down to business. Five hours later, we had covered nearly half the essay and had lunch, promising to meet after I was done being a nanny to finish it and was in an uber on my way to the Schwarzwald household to babysit their thirteen-year-old bratty daughter that I almost always wanted to strangle but because her parents paid so well, she was sadly still alive and unharmed. I had taken up the job of being a part-time nanny despite my paternal uncle insisting he could cater to my needs while I was in Germany for school. He had done so much for me that I felt guilty demanding more from him and instead told him that I would get a job that would help me with some pocket money for my needs here. I wanted a more well-paying job as I wanted to pay for my own accommodation but he was having none of it and insisted that he would pay as it was his duty to me and my late parents. The nanny job was meant to be a bit less tiresome and wouldn't take so much of my school time, even though my course was pretty flexible in that I could take most of my classes online or even do the exams online. However, I liked the first-hand experience more. The Uber driver stopped in front of the beautiful white two-story house and with a deep sigh, paid my bill and walked out of the cab, mentally preparing myself before I walked into the house of terror. Four hours later and I had managed to survive another afternoon without wanting to kill the Schwarzwald brat. I don't think I'd ever been as happy as when her parents always came back and I was free to go home. Linda Schwarzwald wasn't the only kid I babysat. There were two more families that took my free time during the week and sometimes on the weekends. The Manvuch family from Russia had four boys aged twelve, ten, seven, and three. And the Smiths, a small English family with two adorable twin girls who were ten and by far the most behaved children I babysat. The Manvuch boys could be naughty but it was normal for a house full of boys and luckily I had experience with such having younger siblings and a niece who was also naughty. However, Linda was on another level. She thought she was a princess and treated everyone else around her like scum. I was in an even worse situation as she not only viewed me as her servant but the fact that I was an immigrant gave her ignorant ass more power to do whatever she thought she could. Her parents weren't any better, but they pretended not to notice how their daughter was because I was the only one tolerant enough to stand her. I opened the door to my small apartment not noticing that it was in fact open and I was too tired to notice that I had closed it before I left that morning. Only when I heard the TV playing music in the background and two figures seating on the second-hand dark brown two-seater leather couch in front of it did I get startled and screamed bloody murder. "Jesus woman!"I heard my best friend exclaim standing up to face me with her ears covered. I turned on the lights of my single-room apartment revealing my startled best friend and our other friend Hamida who was also Liz's roommate. She looked equally scared and shocked. "What the hell you two doing in my house? "I asked closing my door and walking to stand in front of them. "Well, in case you forgot, we had an assignment to finish... "Said Liz as she sat back down, lifting her legs and placing them on top of my already slanting second-hand black coffee table and taking the remote as if she owned the place. I facepalmed having forgotten that we had indeed said we were to meet up to finish the essay and my stupid best friend smirked victoriously as she gave me the "your welcome look". Hamida stood up and I walked to her side and hugged her before she sat back down leaving the single black leather seat on the side for me. "We were supposed to meet up but we didn't say my house!" I told her trying to be smart. "It's so obvious we were coming here. After all, we were having sleep overnight here this weekend. Besides, we always use your neighbor's WiFi and we need WiFi to finish." She replied smugly and I just rolled my eyes and sat down on the single seat. My apartment wasn't exactly the best. It was a huge studio apartment with a small kitchen on the side and a small staircase that the previous owner had installed that led to what was the bedroom. When you walked in, the living room was the first thing you saw followed by the kitchen at the back end of the huge room. The bathroom was on the left side of the front door and that was where the stairs began that led to the make-shift bedroom. It wasn't what I expected but it was all I could get at such short notice and the landlady Marjorie, a sixty-year-old woman with the heart of gold was super kind to let me rent it out at half the price. The previous owner had left the couch and the settee, plus the coffee table, and Marjorie (or Marj) had Lent me her spare bed. The kitchen had been somewhat furnished with an outdated cooker, fridge, and microwave but it was better than nothing. The last two months I had lived there, I had managed to give it a bit of a homey feeling, adding my personal touch, making it look more like a home than a construction site or a damned site for the homeless. "Well, you should have called to let me know instead of giving me a near heart attack." I scolded her still not letting go of their intrusion. "I didn't think you'd forget. I forgot you were dealing with Miss ugly beat today." She replied changing the channel. "If it's any consolation, we ordered take out." Supplied Hamida in her timid yet raspy voice. Hamida was the calm one in the group. The matron had thought it would be less lonely if Liz had a roommate who came from a bit close to home, and Hamida who came from our home country's neighbor, Tanzania, was the perfect specimen. It had taken them approximately two seconds to click after they made fun of the matron and her harmless yet somehow idiotic ideas to partner them just cause they came from the same continent and from then on, the three of us have been thick as thieves. Hamida took a different cause from us, choosing to study Chemical engineering, a course the love of her life also took. She and her boyfriend had the classic love story. They both grew up in strict Muslim families and had been friends as they lived in the same neighborhood. They obviously fell in love and had been dating. However, while Hamida's family had no issue with them dating as they had hoped it would eventually lead to marriage, Hisham, her boyfriend's family had other plans for their son, wanting to marry him into a rich family. Hisham had asked his family to let him pursue a course in chemical engineering and chose to do it in Germany. Hamida having learned that they were free scholarships to Germany applied and got accepted. The two now enjoy their time together in secret though and away from Hisham's meddling family. "Please tell me you ordered my favorite... "I asked them in a pleading tone. They both chuckled before Hamida replied, "Sleepovers can't be sleepovers without Pizza and Chicken."
