Serve the guests

"How did you know? Who are you?” I demanded, yanking the annoying wire out of my ears. She straightened and looked me straight in the eye. "The djinn is also with you.” She stated and made a second bow. "You don't need to do anything, I and my girls will take it up from here.” She clapped and ladies dressed in maid uniforms filed in, each bowing their greetings to me as they proceeded to carry out their tasks. "Who are you?” I asked her, walking briskly towards her. She squinted at the plate in her hand before turning to look at me. "I was sent.” Was the only response she gave to my question. 'You need to begin the search for the jaded ring.’ I hissed to shut him up, but he just continued to speak. 'You need to do it now while they are all occupied.’ he persisted. I walked out of the kitchen, pretending to hobble as I leaned into my cane. Where should I go from here?” "Hey you, come here." Conrad called me from the corner. I clenched my fist and gritted my teeth. Why couldn't I have a semblance of peace? I limped towards him, forcing my head to hang low as he stretched a bottle to me. “Take. Serve the guest." I accepted it and continued towards the sitting room with barely any space left as I poured wine into many empty glasses while enduring the look of disgust thrown my way. “Over here." A voice called from far behind me and I turned to see the potbellied governor, his son and a couple of others. “Don't you like your new role as a barman?" He smirked as he gulped the content of his wine glass in one go. I nodded silently. “You should have just been respectful from the onset and we wouldn't have gotten to deal with you like we did." He added unnecessarily as he patted the shoulders of the two men beside him. He stretched out his hand to me at last but I just stared at it till I got a hit on the back of my head. “Take his hand at this moment." Conrad commanded. “Do you think you would ever be powerful enough like he is? Do you have any backing stronger than this? Accept his handshake!" Conrad jabbed at my side. I forced my hand forward to take his hand but he just withdrew his hand with a sly smirk. “Oh! Sorry I forgot your hand might be dirty from touching different things and being unwashed. Anyways it's nice knowing you'll be my brother-in-law in the future." The men around us broke into boisterous laughter and I felt my chest expand with fury. ‘You must learn to curb your anger son.’ “Shut up!" I barked at the djinn and they went silent. “What did you just say?" He set his glass down on the dining table and cracked his knuckles. I almost didn't want to respond to him but I got a hard shove on my ribs by Conrad. “Apologize to him at this moment!" He barked, fury burning in his eyes. 'Now son!’ “Sorry." I hissed between clenched teeth. “Now, that is no way to apologize to the son of a governor." Conrad proceeded to pinch my back till I hissed. “It's my engagement celebration and you still want to ruin my fun. Boy, you have…” "I am sorry!” I bellowed and felt myself bow quickly. "Stop doing that.” I hissed at the djinn. "Did you say something, boy?” He asked. What was this lad's problem with calling me a boy? I am no boy. "No.” I grumbled. "Apologize properly.” He ordered. I straightened and stared him in the eyes. "What? You won't?” He raised a brow. I could feel eyes drilling holes all around my body. “My father right here is the governor of city X and man, I am going to make sure that you suffer for the rest of your life if you do not apologize to me this instant." He hissed at me. My breath turned heavy as I challenged him with my eyes. So what if your father is a governor? I am a Lord in my clan. Can you beat that? “How else do you want him to beg you young master?" Conrad asked, almost bending at the knee. I sneered at his hypocrisy. “By licking my shoes." My eyes widened at his audacity. “What are you still standing around for?" Conrad pushed me forward. “Quick! Lick his shoes and leave." I didn't bulge, my eyes moving from Conrad, to the arrogant man before me and back to the governor who sat like he would need a dozen soldiers to raise him up. “What? You won't do it?" He dared. I bit my tongue from saying what I really wanted to say. “Lick my shoes now!" He ordered, baring his teeth at me. Suddenly there was a collective gasp behind me but I didn't dare to turn back. I watched his face grow pale instead before reddening. "How dare you?” A lady shrieked from the entrance and I turned to stare.
