Chapter 8

Once again fear found me. It spoke to her in its cackling voice. It told her legs to go weak, her stomach to lurch and her heart to ache. My mother once told me that there was nothing to fear but fear itself, but still I could not silence its voice. But I could not believe what I had just heard from this ridiculously handsome man who was standing in front of me. He just said that I had made weapons sing before my Awakening and I was well aware that it was not a good thing at all. “It is not a bad thing Ms. Atwood. Don’t be scared. It is unheard of but that does not mean that it is necessarily bad,” said Whitmore as he gave me a tepid smile. Whatever it was, his smile or the assurance that he exuded from his voice assuaged my fears a little bit. I closed my eyes and breathed in deeply but could only smell the dust but then there it was. I could hear it. It was not music. It was a song. Someone was singing it in this room. The voice was female and I could hear it in my head and my heart was beating wildly. I needed to get to that voice now. I have been waiting for you For more than a millennia Come seek me for I am your destiny Like you are mine Together we ride Together we kill Together we conquer I have been waiting for you To make you mine Like you would make me yours….   Strange words, and I was sure whoever it was did not know how to properly rhyme but she was singing for me and that much was absolute certain. Whitmore took in my expression and knew that something was going on but I was least worried about whether he snooped in my thoughts or not. It was my least concern at that moment when I could see a tinge of red at the back of a wall. It was behind an old wooden trunk and I shoved it out of the way. I hurt my hand in the process but at that moment I think that adrenaline was coursing through my veins and I did not even care what happened. Then I saw that there was a crumpled figure of a metallic knight with a beautiful scabbard in it’s grasp. And the music was coming from there, I could still hear the ringing in my ears and then I did not know what came over me but instead of trying to pry it out of the knight’s hands I punched it directly in the chest portion caving it and suddenly a swarm of insects covered me in a second. They were biting me everywhere but I had only one mission. Get that weapon. But it was not a weapon. It felt like that it was my sister who was waiting for me and finally when I touched it a jolt of live electricity passed through my body. I had the sword in my hand and it was pulsing red and the locusts or whatever it was that was biting me was gone. It was like a protection detail to the sword so that no one would find her. The music had not stopped and I was singing along with her and swaying and then I remembered that I whispered,” Nightshade.” And that was just before everything went black but someone caught hold of my head and I did not bump it badly. Getting unconscious every single time it happened was becoming a bad practice and I needed to get rid of it.   The next time I opened my eyes I was in my own room and looked at the ceiling and the fluorescent stars and moon on the ceiling which glowed at night. It was a small something that my mother had packed without me knowing as she knew that I could never sleep at peace in a new place. Now in the daylight they were just plain a greenish hue and I could hear the raised male voices just outside my room. “Why on earth would you do that? Do you have no sense at all Whitmore?” asked Headmaster Motley’s voice and it was clear that he was quite agitated. “With all due respect Sir, I knew what I was doing and this had to be tested before the ceremony because after she has been initiated we would not know that whether it happened because of her powers or just because she is different. She is a unique one Sir, I can feel it,” said Whitmore’s voice and I felt giddy for the first time. It gave me a rush of pleasure that he considered me unique. “Thankfully you have not been blessed with the Sight Whitmore, or else I do not know how I was supposed to handle your feelings. We have a freaking demon infiltration and outbreak in all [arts of the world and our students are least prepared to fight anything like that!!!” said the Headmaster and I sat up on the bed bolt upright. Did he just say demon infiltration and outbreak? What the freak was happening here? “I have requested you several times Sir that the students who are coming in the higher studies should be trained how to use their powers and their skills for offensive training rather than the defensive training that has been given them till now. Times are changing Sir and if we do not change with them then we might very well be extinct and let Hell reign over in Earth,” said Whitmore as the door flung open and before they could see me I lay back on my pillows with my eyes half-lidded. “How are you feeling my dear girl?” asked Headmaster Motley as he sat beside me pulling a chair and I turned towards him. I could feel that my face was completely bloated up and I could speak with a lot of difficulty. I could only nod at him and say that I was fine. Looking at my face he turned towards Whitmore again and glared at him. “I am sorry Ms. Atwood for the difficulty that you have faced today. I am sincerely sorry…I cannot believe that you would be so special that you would come to your powers sooner than expected and now that you are coming up I cannot wait to see how you come to them fully. For your face, it will be fine with the medicines,’ said the man with a gleeful smile on his face which did not reassure me under any circumstances. “Nightshade?” I asked him as much as “Ummm is that the name of the weapon that you got from the armoury?” he asked and I nodded and Whitmore nodded towards the end of the room where she was kept inside the scabbard on my table. Thee song was a little slower than before and the words were different but the music was same. “Why are you calling the sword Nightshade?” asked Whitmore in his deep voice which made me aware of all my female parts for the first time in my life. I knew how I must have looked with my face all red and bloated up and bite marks all over my skin…it must be a nightmare but that did not faze me from feeling that fact that this man was incredibly sexy. “My sister,” I said as much I could speak in that condition and both the men raised their brows at my words which clearly told me that they thought that I was off my rocker. “But that is just a sword!!!” said Headmaster Motley and immediately a loud ringing screeched in my ear making me groan out loud in pain… “Not sword…she is my sister…I know it….” I said as I gritted my teeth from the pain and then I glared at Nightshade and immediately she silenced. “Holy Angels of Heaven….do you communicate with the sword?” asked Headmaster Motley with his eyes as wide as saucers as he could not believe what I was saying. As the ringing lessened I sat up on my bed still seeing black spots and my vision swam…whatever those insects were they were definitely poisonous…and I put my hand forth as Whitmore passed me the sword and I opened the scabbard and there she was. Beautiful and gorgeous. In all her glory….so precious… There were five stones engraved in the handle of the sword and one was a ruby, another was an amethyst, and other was a sapphire, one emerald and one dark black obsidian. I had no idea how I knew the names of these gems but there were. There were markings along the entire blade of the sword which glowed red when I touched them. It was hypnotic. I did not know what possessed me but I pulled the sword close and then whispered Nightshade again to the blade which flared up to life and then I kissed the cold metal blade. Yeah…I know how it sounds…absolutely insane but that is exactly what I did and then I was unconscious again. But the blade was gripped in my hand and I did not let go this time. She was supposed to be close to me and I was supposed to be close to her. That was how this was going to work. The next time I was awake I found that Melanie, Bellamy, still a bit pale and Freddie and Andrea all were sitting beside me in the room…Some on the bed, some on the chair and Andrea was standing by the door. “You know since you have come to this Academy there has not been one dull day in my life,” said Melanie as I smiled. And I found that whatever medicine I had been given had worked. Nightshade was still clutched in my hand and the blade was normal. Not flared up or anything at all. “I can say the same but then again I have already murdered earlier, so it is all in a day’s work,” I said as I grinned and all of them burst into laughter. “She is really dark and that is what I like best about her. God…what a dark sense of humour woman…now come on…get dressed,” said Andrea as she dropped a black knee length dress on my lap which had flared sleeves. I did not like flared sleeves and I looked at Freddie. “No sleeves please?” as I pouted and he rolled his eyes. “You should have told me earlier. But you were too busy being in the dream world.. Who gets senseless four times in the same day, huh? And that too in the hands of the hottest teacher of the Academy?” asked Freddie and I snorted. If only he knew what that bastard could do… “This is the standard uniform for the Awakening ceremony sweetie and everyone is going to throw up so it does not matter whether you have sleeves or if you don’t. The dress is getting ruined,” said Bellamy and she was looking brighter that before. I knew that I needed to speak to her about her delicate situation but then the Awakening needed to happen first. “What time is it?” I asked as I rose up and then put back Nightshade in her scabbard and knew that I was going to need a belt to hang her with me. I was not going to keep her away from me any longer.
