In the distance

It's a cold summer afternoon jumping of the school bus I headed down the road to my house. Unlocking the front door I placed my school bag down on the ground near the door and took of my shoes. I headed upstairs an had a shower. I got dressed and head down stairs to the lounge room turning the tv on I scrolled through the channel's nothing to interesting was on. Signing into Netflix I decided to watch The vampire diaries while waiting for mum to come back from work. As time passed and the sky darkened. "Mum should be home soon. I should see what we are having for dinner?" I thought to myself. Sending a text message to mum. I pressed play on a new episode of The vampire diaries. Sirens in the distance. My belly started to turn getting a sick worried feeling. I began to constantly check the time on my phone.... Starting up on a new episode. Banging came from the front desk. Bang! Bang! Bang! "Hello, Is anyone home. It's the Police" A officer announced Opening the front door. "I'm officer Maxwell. This is Officer Kane. We are looking for Miss Kelly daughter Emily Kelly." Taking a deep breath "Yes, I am her." Everything went blurring, sirens are going off all round dropping to the ground in tears as the words left the officers mouth." I'm Sorry to inform you that your mother has been involved in a car accident. The crew on the scene have tried their best. Unfortunately she passed away at the sense." We headed over to the hospital in police car. Waiting for the doctor. The doctors and officers tried to tell me I couldn't say goodbye to my mum but I demanded to see her. They finally let me into my mum's hospital room. She was covered over with a sheet as the impact of the accident damaged her face and couldn't be recognised. Half and hour passed sitting beside mum hospital bed crying saying goodbye. The officers were speaking to each other. Their radio when off. Officer Kane entered the hospital room. "Sorry Emily to inform you but we need to take you into the police station." "Why? What's happening?" "We need to organise placement for you tonight as you under age and can't stay alone." A few minutes later we existed the hospital getting into the police car. "We are heading back to your house so you can grab some belongings." Officer Kane said looking at the time "two o'clock in the morning." "What a wild day already." Arrive at the house we entered inside "If you could kindly grab a bag of clothes. I'm not too sure when or if you will be coming back here." "I have a dog. I won't be leaving him behind." "That is okay. Go grab him." Walking upstairs still in shocked I grabbed a backpack of a few belongings I thought would come in handy. Heading back down stairs I grabbed my dogs harness and leash. I placed the harness on my dog Timber. I grabbed his two bowls and placed them in my bag. I headed out the front to the officers. After a few minutes of the police contacting the police department through the radio. "A DFC worker will be waiting at the station. She will be the one to organise your placement for night. We got into the police car and headed into Sandy Springs Police station. On arrival police officer Maxwell took me into the interview room. "Please take a seat." "A DFC worker will be in shortly." Walking over to the table I sat down in the seat holding Timber next to me on the ground. "Do you need anything?" In a daze in my own world. No words escaped my mouth. "I'll come back with some cold water." Officer Maxwell exited the interview room. Coming back with a few seconds later with a cold jug of water and a glass cup. "Here you go." Entering behind is a DFC worker. "Morning, I'm Tracy. I work for the Department of family and community services, DFC for short. I am here to help you find permanent placement but for right now I have organised a foster carer to take you in for the night. She is aware you have a dog and said it fine but he will need to stay outside." "She should be here shortly." Existing the interview room and enter the office. Officer Maxwell asked Officer Kane. " Any information?" "Nothing new. I've been looking." "Anything useful." "Nah, not so far." "Alright. Let me know if anything changes." In the interview room. "I have some paperwork here that we have to fill out together." Tracy mentioned sitting down at the table "Just gonna go over your basic details." "What the paperwork for?" "To help us find the perfect placement" "Can't we begin?" "Yeah" Caseworker Tracy began reading off her clip board. "What's your Name?" "Emily May Kelly" "Age, Date of birth?" "Fifteen, born on the six of October twenty-ten." "Your current address?" "Um.." Looking up at Tracy. "Mm. We just say no residence at this stage. " "Placement?" "Undecided at this stage." "Reason for placement?" "No family." "Any family members you can contact?" "Nah. Dad and aunty work too much to care" "Is your aunty your mum's or dad's siblings?" "My Mum's sister." "We will try contact to inform them of your situation in a few minutes." "Okay, but you won't get a hold off them." "We will still try. A few more basic questions got read out and answered. "Could you write down your aunty's and dad's phone number please." Tracy heading a pen and paper. Unlocking my phone, clicking on contact scrolling to the there number writing them down. "Ill be back." Caseworker Tracy exited the room. Entering in the office. Kane could you call these number and notify Mr stone and Miss Kelly on Emily situation." "Family members?" "Aunty and Dad." "They might not answer is what Emily mentioned so call a few times." Tracy entered back into the interview room and finished signing the remainder of the paperwork. Officer Kane tried contacting the family members a few times with no success. Exiting the office area and entering into the kitchen area. Officer Kane bumped into Officer Maxwell. "Sorry." "It's okay." Office Maxwell said exiting the kitchen. "Wait one second." "I wasn't able to find any contact details but Emily gave Tracy her dad and aunty number I wasn't able to get a hold of them. We can only continue trying." The door bell goes off. "A woman looking for Tracy from DFC." Office Sean said entering into the kitchen "Let her know. She will be out in a few." "She is still talking to the client." A few minutes pass Tracy entered out of the office and into the front entrance. Speaking with Mrs Gray they head out the back to the interview room to meet Emily. "My baby. I finally found you." Mrs Gray said rushing into a hug. "Where have you been? I've been searching for years." Mrs Gray said taking a step back out of the hug. Confused. "Sorry I think you have the wrong person." "No, I know your my daughter." "I got a missing person age grower." Pulling out a piece of paper with a photo of a missing teenage girl. "When I seen DFC was looking for placement for you I knew it was true." "Come on let's go home." Looking at the DFC work thinking "she's crazy, don't make me go." Tracy mentioned "It's only for a night. You will be fine." "Of course she be fine she my daughter." Taking a deep breath. I hopped out of the chair. We headed out the doors and into the carpark. "Back seat sweetheart." Getting into the Mrs Gray car I sat in the middle. "No no, kids don't sit in the middle don't you know it's not safe." Mrs Gray said panicking Moving myself to the right of the seat. Mrs Gray clicked my seat belt in and put a child lock on the door. "Can't be too safe sweetheart." Mrs Gray got in the driver seat and started driving. "Would you like a drink, sweetheart?"Mrs Gray handing me a drink bottle. Taking a sip. I when a bit dazed. Driving ten under the speed limit it felt like we weren't going nowhere. "Woah." I said grabbing my hand. "Are you okay, sweetheart?" Looking into the previous mirror of the car. Smile at the mirror at Mrs Gray. "Did I just get drugged?" I asked myself dazzed and not completely sure what was going on." Finally arrived at Mrs Gray house. Mrs Gray got out of the car closing her car door, She walked around opening up the car door. "No sweetheart you don't unbuckle your seat by yourself. You wait for Mum to help you next time." Tapping my hand. Still dazed and in shock from the news from earlier. I wasn't completely sure of what was going on. "Mum?" Mrs Gray held her hand out. "Yes, sweetheart." Placing my hand on top Mrs Gray. She helped me out of the car with timber following behind. "Mummy I thought I lost you." "I know baby. I'm sorry." "We home together now." "We need to take the dog out the back so you can have a look at your bedroom." Heading across the front yard to the backyard fence placing timber in the backyard we headed back across the front yard to the front door. "Mummy. I love you." "I love you too sweetheart." Mrs Gray unlocked the door. Heading inside. "We take our shoes off and place them up there." Mrs Gray said removing her shoes and placing them on the shoe rack. Taking one of my feet out of my shoes Mrs Gray got pissed off speaking with a tone " Didn't I tell you that you wait till I do it. You're too little to be doing it yourself." In fright I jumped back. "Sorry darling. I didn't mean to scare you." Mrs Gray said as she kneeled down took my shoes off. "Come on, Let's go check out your bedroom." Mrs Gray said placing my shoes on the rack. Head spinning from the drink earlier and unaware of what going on I followed Mrs Gray down the hall to a bedroom on the right. Mrs Gray opened up the bedroom door. Standing in the door way. The room was a fairy themed. "I know it has been a while but as you see I keep it the same waiting for the day you come back home." "We can change it if you like?" "Nah, it's fine." "They are all your present from over the years." "I make your favourite for dinner. Are you hungry?" "It smell good" "Take a seat at the table and I'll bring you a warm bowl and a cup of juice." Sitting down at the table Mrs Gray brought over a warm plastic bowl of devilled sausages and mash potatoes with a drink of apple juice in a plastic cup and a kids spoon. "Is there any bigger spoon?" "Yes but your a kid. you might hurt yourself." "okay. fine." Finishing with dinner. I picked up bowl to take it to the sink before I even left my chair,"No leave it your a kid you don't do dishes." "Go have a bath and brush your teeth." Leaving the table I head down to the bathroom. Turning on the bath and putting the plug in. Walking to my bedroom I grabbed my tooth brush and tooth paste out of my back pack and headed back into the bathroom standing at the sink looking into the mirror I started brushing my teeth. Closing the bathroom door I got in the bath. A few seconds passed. Mrs Gray rushed in opening up the door. "Doors don't get shut in my house." "What where you think fill the bath that high. You could drown." "Get out, It's not safe." Mrs Gray said holding the towel up. "Um." "Come on. Nothing I don't have or haven't seen." Hesitant and weird out. I feel like there was no choice. I jumped out of the bath hiding my private parts. Mrs Gray wrapped the towel around me. "Let go get you in your pj and tucked into bed." As it became more weird by the second. I started to get worried. Mrs Gray dressed me and tucked me in bed reading a nighttime story and kiss my forehead. "Goodnight my sweet angel. I'll see you in the morning." Mrs Gray said exiting the bedroom. Trying to sleep I just couldn't lay awake in bed. My eyes slowly drift off to sleep.
