Chapter Four

As I entered the diner, I was quickly greeted with a hello from Jane. I couldn't help but notice the concern look on her face. I'll ask her about it later I thought to myself as I sat at an empty booth. Not long after I sat; Chase came out of the kitchen for his break with a plate full of mouth watering food. He glanced over at me with a smile that quickly turned to a look of, anger? What is with everyone today? I was expecting him to sit across from me, but was taken back when he sat directly next to me. "What happened? Who did this to you?" was the first thing he asked me. "W-what do you mean?" I stuttered. "Amy, your jaw and eye is swollen and black. Who hurt you?" "It's nothing. I fell on the sidewalk walking over from the library." I was panicking on the inside. If father finds out that somebody knows what he does to me, I'm dead for sure. Not only me, but the person who finds out. I can't have him hurting Chase. Chase sighed, but didn't bother pushing the subject. "Have you eaten today? "No, not yet." I replied. "I made more chicken fingers and fries than I can handle. Would you like the share with me?" At that moment, my stomach decided to rumble. How embarrassing. "I'll take that as a yes." He chuckled. To my surprise, I felt completely comfortable with Chase. The rest of his break was filled with small talk that went smoothly. I even found myself laughing, which is something I haven't done in so long. For once in my life, I felt joy. After half an hour, he went back to work. I decided it was time to head back home. I took a different path which led me past a huge lake. I made a mental note to myself to come back another day to enjoy the view. I opened the door to the house, and was surprised when I heard a voice from the living room asking me to come sit. I hesitantly walked over to my father and sat on the recliner across from him. He seemed calm, which made me extremely nervous. "Your home early, how was work?" "Slow, so my boss let me leave early." I lied. "Really? You didn't go exploring in town?" He asked with a slightly raised voiced. I swallowed the lump in my throat before replying. " Umm.. what do you mea... I didn't finish my question before he interrupted me. He grabbed something from the end table, my phone, and started reading my text messages out loud. "HOW DARE YOU f*****g LIE TO ME!" "WHAT DID YOU TELL YOUR BOYFRIEND, HUH?!" "DID YOU TELL HIM I DID THIS TO YOU?!" I was struggling hard to breathe as I whimpered out a no.My vision was becoming a blur and his voice a distance. His hands tightly around my throat. I saw tiny black dots before the darkness welcomed me.  When I awoke, I noticed my shattered phone on the floor near me. Ugh. I need water, my mouth is so dry. I didn't dare turn the sink on or make any noise that could wake the beast. Instead, I went to my room to get ready for work. s**t, what time is it? I hope I'm not late! It looks pretty early out. I didn't bother making breakfast, f**k him. I finally made a decision to be free of this hell. After my shift at work, of course.
