Camita's POV:
I hear the sea, wash up on the shore, beckoning me to come play. I inhale the seas fragrance as it fills my room. I slowly open my eyes. Today, is a new day. I slide out of bed, my bare feet hitting the warm floor. I pull my hair back and walk to the bathroom. Looking in the mirror, I admire my emerald green eyes. No one else on the island had eyes like mine. They label me a freak. I splash water on my face, washing away my negative thoughts. I turn on the hot water to the shower, and begin to undress. My body isn't perfect either. Stretch marks covered my hips, and I was smaller in the chest than the other girls in my class. They looked at me as if I was disgusting.
"Everyone grows different." Mama always told me. I stepped in the shower, letting the hot water rinse away my worries. Today will be a good day, no matter what. I finished my shower and got ready for the day. Walking into the kitchen, the smell of pancakes filled my nostrils. Mama makes the best pancakes. The curtains to the kitchen window swayed along with the sea breeze. Mama stood over the stove, slaving away as she whipped up my favorite breakfast. Pancakes, with fresh strawberries from the island, scrambled eggs from the chickens in the back yard, and french toast. Mama looked worried this morning. Her black hair stuck to her sweaty face, her brown eyes watched the eggs oh so carefully. She finally looked up, noticing I was in the room.
"Good morning my sunshine. How are you feeling this morning? I hope you're hungry, I have plenty of food to feed the entire island this morning." Mama beamed.
"I'm definitely hungry Mama. I smiled at my sweet mama. Raising a teenage daughter alone can't be easy.
We sat down and ate our breakfast together as we always do. She always questions me about the boys at school, and if the girls were being kind to me. Most of the kids at school are from the other island. They've slowly migrated here, taking over our island. Some of them were kind, and we got along pretty well, but the general's daughter was the worst of them all. Her father has filled her with such lies of the island and the people who lived here before them. If only she knew that we were really normal people just as they were. Sure, they were more advanced than we were when they came, but we've caught up.
I finished my breakfast, kissed mama on the cheek, and rushed out of the door. My best friend Thamo was waiting for me at the end of the road as he always has. He smiled at me running towards him. He was about six foot three, with black shaggy hair, that came down to his chocolate colored eyes. He wasn't bad looking, but I've always thought of him as a brother. We grew up together. My mother was best friend's with his father Malu. When his mother died giving birth to him, she stepped up to help Malu.
"How is my lovely lady this morning?" Thamo asked.
"I'm okay dork. Today is a good day. My birthday is tomorrow and nothing is going to ruin it. Eighteen. I can't believe it! And today is our last day of school. No more waking up at five in the morning for no reason. I swear, I'm going to live in the ocean the rest of my life." I rambled.
"I wouldn't put it past you", he joked, "just don't forget about me while you're off playing mermaid."
I scoffed. "I would kill to live a life like that. I wish the legends were true. It'd be nice to know there's more to life than this island."
We walked towards the school, guards surrounded the perimeter. I smiled knowing I'd never have to see this tall, white brick building again. Walking in always gave me such anxiety, not that it was chaotic, but because it wasn't. There were no crowds to blend in to, we were forced to walk in single filed lines. Boys in one line, girls in the other. This supposedly helped the guards keep their eyes out for intruders, whoever that would be. We stay in these single file lines to go to our lockers, grab the books we need for the day, and then we split to go to class. That's when I'm most comfortable. I can blend into the crowd and go unnoticed for the most part. Thamo finds me in the crowd and guides me towards our class. The excitement of our last day filled the air. The entire senior class fit in one classroom. There were maybe twenty of us, planning on going in all different directions with our lives. Some wanted to explore the seas, some wanted to return to their original island, others planned to stay here. I had no idea what I wanted out of life.
I've never been the biggest fan of love. Ever since my fifth grade boyfriend dumped me in front of everyone, I've stuck to my studies. So lost in thought I never saw her walk in. The goddess herself. Mallie. With her slender body, and long, sleek, blonde hair. Her baby blue eyes were my deepest envy. She was confident, she knew she was gorgeous, on the outside. Inside, she was fugly. She was mean for no reason, she pushed people around, she got what she wanted, not caring who she had to step on to get it.
"Excuse me land whale, you're sitting in my seat." Mallie whined.
"Bite me toothpick." I snapped.
"Wha-" she was cut off.
"Ladies, could we find our seats please, we must begin passing out congratulations." The teacher interjected.
Mallie found her seat, and snarled her lip my way. I smiled and gave her the finger, just a sprinkle to piss her off. We've never liked each other, but I wasn't going to let her talk down to me. No matter what was in my mind, I would never allow her to know the effect she had on me. There was a big party tonight on the beach, to celebrate our graduating, since we didn't get a ceremony. The teacher gave us our diploma's in class, and we finished the day talking of the future. I couldn't look further into the future than tonight. I was too excited.
