Chapter Three – The Offer

380 Words
Amara forced herself to steady her breathing. Adrian Cole was even more intimidating up close than the tabloids described. Wealth and authority clung to him like a second skin, and his gaze made her feel both exposed and invisible all at once. She cleared her throat. “I… I don’t understand, Mr. Cole. I never applied here. There must be some mistake.” He studied her as though she were a puzzle he intended to solve. “No mistake.” He moved toward his desk, his long strides measured, confident. With a flick of his hand, he gestured for her to sit. Her legs carried her forward on instinct, though every nerve screamed at her to run. “I’ve read your file,” Adrian said, lowering himself into his leather chair. “Top of your class. Creative mind. Yet…” He leaned back, his eyes narrowing. “You’ve been wasting your time sending applications to companies that don’t deserve you.” Her lips parted. “My… file?” She hadn’t given him anything. How much did he know about her? He ignored her question, picking up a silver pen and rolling it between his fingers. “I’m offering you a position. Personal assistant.” The words hung in the air. Amara blinked, certain she had misheard. “Personal assistant? But… why me?” Finally, a smile ghosted across his face, though it was more unsettling than reassuring. “Because you’re not like the others. You don’t fawn. You don’t flatter. And yet, I can see it in your eyes.” He leaned forward slightly, his gaze pinning her in place. “You want more out of life. You want to rise.” Her heart pounded. He wasn’t wrong. But something about the way he said it felt less like an offer and more like a challenge. She swallowed. “And if I say no?” Adrian’s smirk deepened. “You won’t.” The air between them tightened, heavy with unspoken tension. Amara wanted to protest, to tell him he was arrogant, overbearing, impossible. Instead, all she managed was a shaky exhale. “Think carefully, Miss Johnson,” Adrian said, his voice soft but commanding. “Step beneath my gaze, and your life w ill never be the same again.”
