Chapter One-The Ordinary Girl
The rickety ceiling fan hummed lazily above Amara’s head, stirring the warm Lagos evening air but offering little relief. She shifted on the worn cushion of the sofa, her laptop balanced on her knees as the screen blinked with yet another rejection email.
“We regret to inform you…”
Her chest tightened. She had lost count of how many times she had read those words in the past three months. With her degree in hand and dreams bigger than her small apartment, she had imagined a life different from this—glamorous jobs in tall glass buildings, maybe even her own skincare line one day. Instead, she was juggling part-time shifts at a café and tutoring kids in the neighborhood to pay bills.
From the kitchen, her younger brother’s voice echoed.
“Amara, the light’s gone again!”
She sighed, closing the laptop. NEPA had struck, as usual. She rose, struck a match, and lit the small candle on the table. Its glow cast soft shadows against the peeling walls. Her brother shuffled in, holding his textbooks.
“You’ll make it, you know,” he said, studying her face. “One day they’ll see you’re worth more than all these rejections.”
Amara smiled faintly, brushing his hair back. She had promised herself she would keep his faith alive, even when hers wavered.
But deep inside, a voice whispered: How much longer can I keep pretending I’m not tired of fighting?
Her phone buzzed suddenly, jolting her thoughts. A message flashed across the cracked screen:
“URGENT: Interview tomorrow, Cole Enterprises. 10 a.m. Don’t be late.”
Her heart skipped. Cole Enterprises? The name carried weight, whispered in business circles with awe and envy. Everyone knew the man behind it—Adrian Cole. The billionaire.
Amara’s lips parted slightly as she read the message again. It had to be a mistake. She had never even applied there. And yet… tomorrow, she was expected to walk into his empire.
She didn’t know it yet, but her life was about to change—forever.
