The Unexpected Husband
“You’re already married. Why are you still here to register?”
“Do you not know about the crime of bigamy?”
……
Olivia Bennett walked out of the civil affairs bureau, stunned, clutching the marriage certificate that had just been printed by the staff.
The man who accompanied her to the registration looked at the strikingly beautiful girl before him and lamented, “Olivia Bennett, why did you hire me for a fake marriage when you’re already married?”
He then left with a curt “no refund of the deposit,” hurrying away.
Olivia Bennett bit her lip, still in shock.
How could she be married when she had never even been in a relationship?
She looked down again at the printed document.
In the photo on the certificate, the girl appeared slightly reserved, with a forced smile and a teardrop-shaped mole at the corner of her eye—indeed herself. As for the man…
His features were sharply defined, with a high, straight nose and thin lips curved into a barely perceptible smile. His intense gaze seemed to pierce through the photograph.
Even in black and white, his aura of mystery and authority was unmistakable.
She looked again at the name: Ethan Miller.
……She was certain she did not know this person at all!
What on earth was happening?!
Olivia Bennett took out her phone, snapped a photo of the document, and sent it via WeChat to a contact with a black avatar: [Help me find out who he is.]
The response was instantaneous: [Received.]
Olivia Bennett suppressed her bewilderment, mounted a shabby electric scooter, and leisurely rode into a luxurious villa district, arriving home.
Today was a momentous occasion for her sister Emily Hayes, as her fiancé would be visiting to formally propose.
The house was adorned with festive decorations, and the servants bustled about in an orderly fashion, with a few temporary workers hired for the day.
Olivia Bennett parked her scooter in a corner, and behind her, the voices of the temporary workers and servants could be heard:
“Who is she? She’s so beautiful!”
“Shh, she’s the illegitimate daughter not acknowledged by Mr. Hayes.”
“Her mother was a mistress who, while pregnant, came to confront the madam, leading them to give birth on the same day. That old woman has a thick skin; she’s been finding excuses to stay here all these years.”
“Olivia Bennett knows her place, having moved out in junior high and not returning for many years. I wonder what she’s here for today…”
Olivia Bennett lowered her gaze, pretending not to hear the conversation as she entered the living room.
Her mother, Sophie Collins, stood at the door, her enduring elegance evident. She anxiously pulled Olivia upstairs, “Come with me to find your sister. By the way, did you get the marriage certificate?”
Olivia Bennett’s voice was soft and unreadable: “Yes.”
Though the husband was a different person, she had still obtained the certificate, hadn’t she?
“That’s good. Remember your place—Ryan Carter is your sister’s fiancé. Such a top-tier family is beyond the reach of an illegitimate daughter like you! Only your sister deserves him!”
At these words, a hint of mockery flashed in Olivia Bennett’s eyes.
Ryan Carter was the eldest grandson of the most prominent family in the city. He had pursued her for four years during college but proposed to Emily Hayes on graduation day…
Upon learning this, Sophie Collins had insisted Olivia Bennett immediately marry someone else to sever any remaining possibility with Ryan Carter.
It had always been this way…
Whenever there was even a slight conflict of interest between her and Emily Hayes, Sophie Collins demanded her unconditional submission.
Because she was an illegitimate daughter, her existence was seen as a fundamental sin.
As a child, she had been brainwashed into accepting such treatment as natural.
But now she was fully awakened.
Olivia Bennett’s face grew serious as she stated emphatically, “We agreed this is the last time.”
The fault lay with Sophie Collins. It was Sophie who, to see her father every day, clung to the home and sought to please Emily Hayes. Olivia Bennett would not sacrifice her own life for her.
This was her opportunity to repay her mother’s debt of childbirth and end the matter once and for all.
Sophie Collins, impatient, replied, “I know.”
As they spoke, the two women arrived at Emily Hayes’s room.
The lovely girl, dressed in a resplendent gown like a princess, sat on the sofa selecting jewelry, the room shimmering with opulence.
Olivia Bennett, in stark contrast, was modestly dressed but stood with a straight back.
Emily Hayes, seeing her, greeted, “Olivia Bennett, what brings you here?”
Before Olivia Bennett could respond, Sophie Collins interjected, “Emily Hayes, Olivia Bennett got married today.”
Emily Hayes, surprised, asked, “So soon? Who is the groom? Is he better than Ryan Carter?”
Sophie Collins derisively replied, “Impossible! There’s no one of higher status in the entire city than Ryan Carter! Emily Hayes, she couldn’t even find a good match—just a fallen family, too embarrassed to bring him here for fear his impoverished appearance would offend your eyes!”
Emily Hayes, with a hint of jealousy, said, “How can that be? Olivia Bennett is so beautiful; otherwise, Ryan Carter wouldn’t have pursued her for four years.”
“Beauty means nothing. A worn shoe matches a worn sock. With her status, only some lowly character would deign to marry her. Ryan Carter only saw her as a toy, something to amuse himself with. Only Emily Hayes, with your status, deserves Ryan Carter.”
Olivia Bennett frowned.
The appearance and demeanor of the man in the photograph bore no resemblance to a fallen or disreputable figure.
But she was disinclined to argue with such meaningless remarks.
At that moment, Emily Hayes, having selected her jewelry, tried to put on high heels but found the gown too tight to bend comfortably.
Emily Hayes smiled slightly and looked at Olivia Bennett.
Sophie Collins immediately nudged Olivia Bennett, “You useless girl, why are you still so clueless! Your sister needs help; hurry up and assist her with her shoes!
Olivia Bennett: “……”
Here we go again.
Did Sophie Collins really believe she was still the naive, defenseless child who never knew how to stand up for herself?
Her gaze was frosty, her voice tinged with impatience: “You can help her yourself.”
“Olivia Bennett, what’s with this attitude? Do you think your wings have grown since you got married? Your husband is just a freeloader; you’ll still have to rely on the Xu family!”
Sophie Collins’s voice rose: “If you don’t mend relations with your sister now, one day you and your husband will end up begging her! Besides, raising you, you should be prepared to serve as a maid!”
At that moment, a towering figure appeared at the doorway—her father, Jackson Reed.
The man frowned, “What are you all arguing about? A distinguished guest is about to arrive.”
Emily Hayes said nothing, playing innocent.
Sophie Collins lamented, “It’s this ungrateful daughter; now that she’s married, she disregards me, her mother…”
Jackson Reed’s gaze fixed on Olivia Bennett, frowning, “Married? Why didn’t you let the family help you find someone? Where’s the marriage certificate? Let me see…”
Faced with her estranged father’s concern, Olivia Bennett hesitated, then pulled the printed document from her bag.
But the next moment, Sophie Collins snatched it away: “Let me see. What’s this useless husband’s name?”
Emily Hayes curiously asked, “Dad, who’s coming that makes you so anxious?”
Jackson Reed, recalling the guest, felt a surge of excitement and said with enthusiasm:
“Ethan Miller.”
Olivia Bennett was instantly stunned.
……Who?
