A few minutes had passed and Roland was beginning to worry that Konaté had turned off somewhere when he rounded a bend and through the blurred windshield he saw the brake lights of a car, at the top of the next hill, pulling to a stop beside the road. When he got close he could see it was Konaté's vehicle and he pulled up behind it and got out. The car was parked at the top of a steep precipice. Below was the rain swollen river.
