Chapter One: The woman in White
Chapter One
The serene environment resonated of silence; a peace combination of the sweet scent that pierced through the atmosphere and the comforting effect it was pregnant with.
I looked up to see a handsome young man standing right before me wearing a beautiful smile and a traditional hot cup of coffee in one hand and a plate of freshly made croissants.
“Miss your coffee is ready.”
I radiated a smile on my face, a contrast of the budding emotion inside of me as I lifted the phone off my ear for about a second. “Oh thank you.” I replied.
However, a sharp voice pierced through, reminding me I was on a call. “Anaya , are you ignoring me?Quit flirting!”
I tittered, giving the waiter an apologetic smile before he nodded understandingly and turned to leave. “Grandpa! What is wrong with you!” I scolded him, sharply.
I heard him sigh over the phone. “You should get yourself a man, Anaya, you know things are over here.”
“Grandpa, I'm sick of having to hear that all the time. Am I not allowed a life of my own?” I retorted as I took a bite of the croissant, it's savory taste melting at the tip of my bud while I sip my coffee afterwards.
“You know no unmarried fellow is allowed a part in my inheritance, that's how things have been in the family. In order to prove yourself worthy of joining the board of directors and rightfully taking charge; you need to be married. How many times must I explain this to you?” He lamented.
“Long enough for you to know that I'll only comply on my terms.”
“Look, you're my favorite and that's evident but how long do you think you'll be able to hold everyone else off? besides, the family business needs you and you know it!, tell me; do you plan on dragging out family values into the mud?”
“Grandpa..” I protested, munching the last of the first bit in my mouth.
“What is this? The medieval times where you use your children for connections?” I snapped back.
“You need to uphold that family's honor and dignity! It's been like that for years. I'm giving you the chance to find yourself a man else I'll do so on your behalf!”
I caught sight of a young man entering the cafe. He cleaned up quite well, had a nice gait and swaggered towards me.
“I'll do whatever it takes not to bring shame to the family and keep our century long reputation safe, does that make you happy? I don't have to-”
“Excuse me?”
I was suddenly interrupted by a reassuring baritone voice that seemed to have this mysterious melody to it. I lifted my head to see the young man that had just come in.
“May I take a seat?” He asked, politely.
I lowered the phone from my ear, intrigued by his confidence. His broad shoulders were held up high while he radiated a perfectly charming smile.
I looked around curiously, awaiting to see someone wave to him but he was still standing, audaciously.
“You want to sit down, here?” I asked him.
He nodded his head and sat. “Of course.” He answered, still beaming with smiles.
Taken aback by this act, I leaned back, sipping my coffee.
“May I say a word?” He asked for permission and then leaned forward as if wanting to whisper something to me. “You look extremely beautiful in white.” He complimented and I blushed, unintentionally.
“Well, thank you?” I responded, obviously flustered but I cleared my throat, a stir of annoyance emanating from inside me.
Anyone who knew me knows better than to interrupt me while I was talking, worse he did it unapologetically so I frowned. “Who are you?” I fired, drumming my fingers on the table.
“Where are my manners? I'm sorry I kept you waiting. I'm Evans Ludwig.” He replied, extending a hand for a handshake.
I scowled at him suspiciously and he chuckled. “Are you sure you aren't making a mistake? Did someone put you up to this?”
“I'm a twenty-eight year old ex-soldier turned gynecologist who's not so lucky in love and relationships due to the nature of my job.” He continued but I arched an eyebrow, still not getting the point.
“I believe Caspian arranged this blind date and honestly; I confess that I'm exhausted from having to go on several dates knowing well that the women would leave at the end of the day but thank you for showing up in the first place and could you do me a favor?”
I gave him a look that literally translates ‘go on, I'm listening.’
“You don't need to do Caspian a favor by pretending to be interested, having a really nice date would do the trick for me, I'd hate to make you uncomfortable.”
I was speechless, he was gentle while speaking and he didn't for once express anger though I threw him a disdainfully disgusted look.
“Once again, you look absolutely beautiful. May I order you a drink or something? Anything you'd want?” He offered. “Don't worry, your ovaries are safe with me.” He joked lightly.
I chuckled then scoffed. “Look here Mr Evans Ludwig of the gynecology department.” I started and he looked at me with an innocent expression. It was obvious he didn't know who I was. “Are you sure I'm the person you've been set-up on a blind date with?”
“Of course, I texted you and you mentioned being clad in a white floral dress and here you are!” He said, cheerily.
I laughed softly and shook my head, understanding his misconception. “ I'm afraid you've made a terrible mistake Mr Ludwig. I'm no date of yours. I'm Anaya, Anaya Macalister. The CEO of Macalister Empire, heir to the Macalister Companies; the wealthiest family in the country and fifth wealthiest in that world, you know that name right? Ring a bell now?” I introduced, boastfully.
Satisfactorily; I watched the smile on his face freeze instantly and get replaced with a horrific look and he almost fell off the chair. “You-you’re her? The most feared and powerful young Billionairess of the century? Granddaughter of Fischer Macalister, the biggest importer and exporter in the continent!” He stuttered, overwhelmed by amazement.
I nodded my head gently, smiling as I did. He got the message quite instantly and one word was evident in his eyes; scram.
He instantly rose to his feet, panicking but staying composed. “I'm terribly sorry Miss Macalister, this is a huge mistake. I apologize for this, I'll take my leave now.” He hastily apologized, feeling embarrassed.
“It's fine.” I said dismissively with a gentle wave of my hand. He muttered some words under his breath and hastily made his way out of my sight. I could tell he was ashamed and I chuckled to myself.
“You little brat!” Grandpa scolded, drawing my attention back to him.
I tsked and rose to my feet, my bodyguards of mine did same, I walked out of the cafe after giving ‘Evans’ one last look.
“He could have been a potential suitor for you Anaya, I sense a chemistry between you both.” Grandpa said, mischievously.
“Oh Grandpa, you should stick to business not science.” I joked as I comfortably sat into my car.
