The tip of the gun pressed hard on my skin, I was not scared but curious to who would be pointing at me. A voice broke me, “What would you be doing out so late, Inspector? Are you sure you are not one of them?” the voice asked. It sounded familiar, but I could not be sure where or when I had heard it. Before I could reply, a loud thud struck my neck. I collapsed to the ground, my vision blurring and I could hear weakly when the voice kept on talking “Now, let me warn you. If anything should happen to Zedro, I will hunt you down myself.” he said and left. But before everything went dark, I saw who had attacked me, it was the captain, Darion.
Later that night
Executive police quarters
The Chief residence
Zedro
“She saved me, why? Normally, it is every police officer's duty to ensure everyone is safe, but this felt so personal why?” I muttered to myself with my hands folded. I realized she is not only beautiful on the outside but also on the inside. I thought I had been careful, but I was already admiring her, growing attached too quickly. I tried to push her from my thoughts, my hands were free now . but I could not just stop thinking about her. I heard my private line ring I went to it and what I heard was a brief and short words from the caller “MELISSA IS NOT YOUR FRIEND BEWARE OF HER”
The next day
The Chief office
Zedro
I ran my hands over my face, as I checked through clues and hints from recent attacks.
But then my thoughts went to Captain Darion. This morning he told me he had seen Melissa coming from the place where we were ambushed and pressed a gun against her neck. But why would he do that? It does not show any loyalty. What if he wants to stop her from looking for clues ? Could he be a traitor? My instincts screamed yes. The ambush had been too precise, too coordinated to be random. Someone inside the team had done it and Darion had been in the right position at the right moment to make it happen.
I heard a knock on my door and gently someone entered, it was Melissa.
I looked at her. She was still standing across the room, calm and beautiful, and her hazel eyes. Gosh they were beautiful, I swallowed hard. “Inspector Voss,” I said, my voice steady but low, “you acted decisively… but how did you know exactly where to be? It was not just a reflex it was… I do not know, but it was like you were expecting danger.”
Melissa smiled lightly. “Chief, I’m observant. You too must have trained your entire life to notice things, and also know how criminals act.” Her voice was soft, and it made my chest tighten. She was bold, and brilliant, and I found myself unable to look away. Something inside me had shifted. I admired her more than I should, but I need to stop it.
I turned my mind back to Darion. My gut told me he was hiding something..
Melissa must have sensed my suspicion because she tilted her head slightly. “You’re thinking it was Darion,” I looked at her deeply. “Inspector if Darion is behind this, I need to know, I need proof, I cannot leave him or anyone to play this kind of game with us.”
Melissa nodded slightly, “I understand, Chief. But we need to be careful. Whoever set the ambush is patient and clever. They want us reacting, guessing. They want us divided.” She replied
I finally looked away from her. “We need to prepare,” I said, my voice firm. “Darion or whoever is behind this, won’t stop. They will strike again and next time, we will not be caught off guard.”
Melissa nodded. “Agreed, Chief.
The office grew quiet after Melissa had finished talking, not long after I opened my desk drawer. I looked at the golden claw I held it, but immediately I felt a hot pain through my head and it began hurting me. I was remembering something. My parents scream, this claw was there when they had died
Melissa noticed that something was off and immediately she looked at my hand . “Chief… are you alright?” she said moving closer to me
I opened my fingers slowly, staring at the claw. “This symbol,” he said carefully, “I have seen it sometime and it is not only a marking.” I said my eyes were still glued to the claw “It’s a message ” she completed what I was saying. I looked up at her curiously. “You’ve seen it before?.” I asked her my brows raised, Melissa hesitated for a while “ when I lost my parents she replied.” I felt sorry for her but before I could reply, a knock sounded.
“Enter,” I said.
Captain Darion stepped inside, he was showing no expression but his eyes looked at the golden claw in my palm immediately.
“Chief,” Darion said, “we have confirmed the ambush team was planned and their timing matches internal police schedules.”
My jaw tightened. “So we have a leak.” I asked as my eyes narrowed. “Yes, sir.” he replied as his hands held a file tightly
Melissa folded her arms as she sharply cut him. “Or someone who knows how to move through systems without leaving fingerprints.”
Darion looked back at her very hard “whatever you say” Darion said, “but whoever started this is not finished now.”
I studied him closely. “Captain, where were you last night after you left the scene?” My hands laid firm on my desk
Darion did not hesitate. “Making sure that the threat did not follow you home.” he replied smooth and brief
To reduce the tension I nodded once. “You are dismissed.”
Darion turned and left
Later That Night
Alpha Zedro territory
I drove deep into the forest. The air changed to be more alive. Every part of my body became sharp
This was who I truly was, a Werewolf
As I stepped out of the car, shadows moved between the trees, and came to where I was Men and Women. They transformed into werewolves and I did the same,
They knelt the moment I finished transforming
“Alpha,” they said together
I moved forward, at the center stood an older man with a silver wolf body.
“Zedro,” he said. “You have stayed away too long, you are beginning to forget your people.”
“I had to,” I replied. “The human world needed me.” I said although my eyes became watery because I felt guilty
“And now?” he asked me “And now,” I said slowly, “my past is catching up to me.”
He nodded grimly. “The mark has returned.”
“Yes,” I said. “And it’s tied to my parents’ death.”A low growl rippled through the group.
“The enemy is moving again,” the elder continued. “They are manipulating humans and werewolves alike. And Alpha…” He hesitated. “Someone entered the camp today."
My heart slammed hard against my chest.
“What?” I asked, my voice raised and echoed, My fist clenched.
