CHAPTER 1: THE MASK OF BEAUTY
New York Zedro “And a toast to my nephew, the newly elected and youngest chief of police in New York, Chief Zedro.” Uncle Jeffrey called my name out loud in a very influential gathering of over three hundred invited guests. I knew I was destined to be great but I still was not satisfied, until I caught the culprit who assassinated my parents I would never be at peace. “Zedro, child would you mind coming to the podium and giving us a little speech on your dedication to duty”. Uncle Jeffrey had called me and requested. I moved forward, walked to my uncle, stretched my hands to him for a respectful handshake. Just then my ears twitched. I could hear the sound of a moving bullet loud and clear from a suppressed gun. Immediately, I pushed Uncle Jeff down and we both fell flat on the floor, the bullet struck straight at a glass statue which of course shattered the glass masterpiece. There was chaos, screaming and loud cries, “Uncle Jeff are you okay,” I asked while I inspected him for any injuries but he was okay. “No child, heavens guide me” He had replied with a large smile which made me confirm he was in good condition. His personal security officers rushed to the scene and tried to lift him up and as well make him comfortable. I immediately shifted my attention back to the assassin. I looked at the direction of the gunshot and I could see a door left open, “Not this time.” I said as I ran as fast as my legs could carry, I could see a Tesla Cybertruck Driving up but in a glimpse I rushed into my BMW 7 Series, my thoughts raced “A Tesla Cybertruck, that surely a wealthy assassin ” I whispered, I held the steering so tightly and increased my speed Next morning “Good day everyone” I had told my unit I could see the desperation and curious look on their faces so eager to hear about yesterday's event and the new report for the day. “Well as you all know there was an attack at the launch of the new AI invention on the 20th year anniversary of the Veil’s company, with a suppressed gun fired with the aim of ending the Chief executive officer.” I said as I looked on their faces now becoming wrinkled trying to fathom the aim of the attack. “So now Unit I would bring to our notice that although the culprit was not apprehended yesterday we are one step closer with a massive hint that would be sent to this unit privately,” a slight murmur followed which ended as soon as it started. “Furthermore I would bring to our notice the new team sent from the Government bureau of investigation, Captain Darion please do us the favour of introducing this new team since you were properly informed on their coming”. I said while I walked to my desk which faced directly opposite the unit and at the forefront of the room. Captain Darion walked to the door and opened it “You may come in he said”. The door opened slowly and quietly and a team of well ranked police officers just as mine, came in. “Here we have Inspector Melissa Voss and her team.” Darion said as they walked with their feet steady and when they had settled at the front, I nod at the team in approval of them coming, while my unit stood in approval of them both teams then nod and salute each other. “This Unit would be very helpful to our team in bringing an end to the crimes in Newyork…”Darion kept on speaking. I lifted my head and raised my brows so I could have a look and know the people we would be working with and then immediately I noticed something striking. There was this young lady with unmatched beauty, her hazel eyes, her very dark hair neatly packed behind her, her skin were bright I could not help but admire how she shone, and her body she was not slender or extremely slim. She had the perfect curves, her hips were just the best and perfect for a lady, and her lips so red and succulent I could not just stop staring. I looked at the name encrypted on the name plate on her cloth. INSPECTOR VOSS this was the remarkable very beautiful Inspector Voss, just then I had to shake off the thought of admiration, and continued listening to the introduction of the new team and crime strategy Later that day I was seated in my office looking through some files for clues next I heard was, “Good day chief” A soft but courteous and bold feminine voice greeted me. I looked up and saw the striking stunningly Melissa. My mouth was half way opened but I quickly closed my lips and shunned the admiration coming again. “Good day inspector voss” I replied with my hands now placed on my desk “and what's on board Inspector?” I asked her. “Chief I was informed by the precinct that you had an encounter with an assassin the previous night and I would be glad If I could get some information which would obviously be put to good use.” Melissa requested her voice was as soft but sharp and her arms placed firmly at her sides. She carried an aura I could not tell. “That is not a problem, Inspector Voss,” I replied, “Well the assassin I had an encounter with drove a Tesla Cybertruck, one sure wealthy lad. The assassin also drove through a road I could remember quite well but then took a sharp bend but I could not keep up with. These are the only vital info I could grasp about yesterday, Inspector”. I had told Melissa. “Well sir I would not be quick to say a lad you know there could be a possibility to have a driver in the car since the car had started driving off making it difficult for you to keep up. it as well explains the assassin do not work individually but as a team I would as well advise we go through the road they took so we could get a few hints" Melissa said her eyes looking directly at mine “Well then we meet at the car station ” I replied as I turned sideways to stop her eyes from looking at mine. An hour later I stepped into my BMW 7 series, wore my seat belt just before turning on the cars, I looked and saw Melissa entering her private Audi 6 which looks spotless as she herself looks. I turned on my car and she did the same, we both wore earphones for communication. “Are you in?” I asked the inspector. She immediately replied, “Yes, sir.” “Let’s go,” I replied, my hands clenched to the wheels and we drove off very fast, not long after we came to a road I was familiar with, the route the assassin had taken earlier. Then we arrived at a Double Junction, where two streets face directly opposite each other. I decided to turn right because that was the direction the assassin had passed through. Just then, Melissa stopped me and said, “Chief, why don’t we go left? I’m not sure an assassin would want their route to be so obvious. Let us try turning left instead.” As we drove along the road, I began to question myself, had I lost track of the clues? Had I made a mistake in trying to catch the assassin? Melissa’s suggestion kept replaying in my mind, and I started to notice something strange. The road was unusually quiet. I felt a chill run through me, an uneasy feeling that told me something was not right. Everything just felt wrong. But as I was trying to make sense of my suspicions, we were suddenly ambushed. A group of men, clad in black suits and armed with Barrett MH2 rifles, pulled up abruptly in front of us. They stepped out of a grey van with deadly precision. Not long after, one of them, who appeared to be their leader, approached me. “It is better you prevent any deaths and step down quietly,” he said, his voice cold and commanding. Melissa was also caught in the ambush. My heart pounded as I prayed silently that she was safe, unharmed, and not scared. But they did not know that I would not surrender so easily. I had already arranged for police officers to move in behind us, close enough to respond, but far enough to remain unseen. Within moments, my own unit of well‑trained police officers pulled up. They opened fire before the group could properly prepare themselves. That was when I realized where Melissa was. She had already been taken hostage by one of the men in a black suit, who was using her as his escape route. My men continued shooting, but the man threatened to kill Melissa if anyone fired at him. My head was filled with thoughts, I had found a way, I dared to face the man myself. I moved closer to him, I dropped my gun on the floor not because I was weak, but as bait because I still intended to shoot him. He took Melissa with him to the door of the van. Just as he wanted to enter the van, thinking he would escape, I brought up my short rifle and fired. What came next was strange Melissa started running very fast towards me screaming my name loudly, in less than a second she had pushed us both to the floor and what I heard next was a gunshot
