Chapter 31When the lab disappeared, they found themselves in complete darkness. They had planned to arrive at night when there would be smaller chance of encountering anyone. Their eyes were accustomed to the light of the lab, and they had not brought their night vision goggles. There was no room in their bags or pockets. They were crouched to minimize what others could see. They were back to back looking out in all directions to react to any threat, but they were completely blind. The vision would return as their eyes adjusted, but that could take several minutes. They froze listening for any sounds. Not hearing any they waited for their vision to improve. As they silently surveyed their surroundings, they were relieved to see that they were on a rocky embankment just below a narrow foot
