The Gathering Storm

Fresh reports hit the war room like a declaration of war. Rorik spread the latest maps across the table and spoke fast. "Kieran is gathering allies. Two smaller packs have joined him. He is telling everyone that Astrid was stolen against her will. He is calling for open conflict to take her back." Darius’s face stayed hard. "How many fighters?" "Enough to be a real problem if they move together," Rorik answered. "They are preparing our supply lines. It will not be long before they test our borders." Astrid leaned over the map. "Then we prepare the fortress now. No delays. Strengthen the outer walls. Move extra stores inside. Double the night watches on every approach." Darius looked at her. "You sound ready for blood." "I am," she said. "He is still trying to own the story. I will not let him turn me into a stolen prize." They spent the next hours giving clear orders. Warriors moved with purpose through the corridors and yards. Blacksmiths worked late into the night. Scouts rode out to watch every road and ridge. Astrid walked the walls with Rorik and pointed out weak spots that needed more guards. "Here," she said. "And here. If they come at night these are the places they will test first. Put extra archers on the upper ledges." Rorik nodded. "You know their thinking. We will lock it down before the next full dark." In the main hall that evening Darius called the full court together. He stood with Astrid at his side and raised his voice so every wolf could hear. "Kieran of Silverfang is gathering forces. He claims I stole what was his. Hear me clearly. Astrid chose this place. She stands as future Queen. Anyone who questions that answers to both of us. We prepare for war. We do not hide and we do not apologize." A captain stepped forward. "The men will fight. But some still ask if this conflict is worth the cost in blood." Astrid answered before Darius could. "It is worth it because I will not be used as an excuse for another man’s pride. Stand with us or leave the fortress now. There is no middle ground left." The captain met her eyes for a long moment and then bowed his head. "We stand. The rest will follow." The court followed his lead. Her position grew stronger with every word spoken in the open. Later a patrol returned with a bound man. They dragged him into the lower chamber where Darius and Astrid waited under torchlight. "Spy," the lead warrior said. "Caught near the south road. He had these on him." He dropped a small pouch of coded notes on the table. Astrid picked one up and read it quickly. "These are Silverfang marks," she said. "Old ones. The kind Draven used when he was still leaking routes." Darius grabbed the spy by the collar. "Talk. Who sent you and what were you meant to report?" The man spat. "I answer to no one here." Astrid stepped closer and spoke cold. "You will answer. Or you will lose pieces until you do. Start with Draven. Is he still locked up in Silverfang?" The spy hesitated. Fear flickered in his eyes. "He is not. Someone freed him three nights ago. He is moving between the allied packs. He is helping Kieran plan the first strikes. That is all I know." Darius’s grip tightened. "Where are they meeting?" "I do not know exact camps. Only that he is free and angry. He wants payback as much as Kieran does. That is all I was told." Astrid stared at the man without blinking. "Then you are no longer useful tonight." She turned to the guards. "Lock him down. No visitors. No food until morning. We will see if he remembers more when he is hungrier." After the spy was taken away Darius looked at her. "Draven free is a real problem." "It is also a chance," Astrid said. "He is reckless when he is angry. If he is helping Kieran he will leave tracks. We use those tracks." That night Astrid called two of her most trusted scouts into a private room. Her voice was calm and sharp as she laid out the next steps. "The quiet messages are no longer enough," she told them. "I want targeted strikes. Not open battle. Small ones. Supply wagons on the back roads. Message riders moving between the new allies. One elder’s private storehouse near the old training grounds. Make it look like rogue work or internal fighting. I want Silverfang looking inward while we prepare." The first scout asked, "How far do we go with the strikes?" "Far enough that they feel pressure every single day," she answered. "Far enough that Kieran’s new allies start questioning the cost of following him. Political pressure from the outside. Targeted pain from the inside. Both at once." The second scout nodded. "We can start tomorrow night. The routes are still familiar." "Do it," Astrid said. "And report only to me or to the King. No one else." After they left Darius entered. He had heard enough from the corridor. "You have gone darker," he said. "I have gone practical," she replied. "Kieran wants a war built on a lie. I will make the lie expensive for everyone who believes it. Draven being free only makes me move faster and hit harder." Darius crossed the room and stopped in front of her. "I support it. Fully. Hit them. Hurt the ones who hurt you. Just keep the fortress ready for whatever comes back at us when they feel the pain." "I will," she said. "We both will. No gaps." He rested a hand against the side of her neck, thumb pressing lightly over her pulse. "This is the part where most people break or run. You are doing neither. You are pushing harder. That is why you belong here with me and nowhere else." Astrid held his gaze. "I stopped running the day I left Silverfang. Now I only move forward. Let Kieran gather his allies. Let Draven run free for a little longer. When the storm breaks they will find us ready and waiting." Outside the fortress winds picked up and carried the scent of distant rain. Inside the walls the final preparations for war continued without pause. Stocks were counted. Weapons were sharpened. Watches were set. Astrid’s darker side was no longer hidden. It was focused and already reaching toward Silverfang with steady, deliberate hands.
