Blood and Strategy

The alarm horns from the outer stronghold cut through the night like a scream. Astrid was already moving before the second blast finished. She grabbed her blades and met Rorik in the courtyard as warriors poured from the barracks. "Coordinated attack on the eastern stronghold," Rorik shouted. "Rogue numbers are high. They hit from two sides at once. The gate is under heavy pressure." Darius strode into the yard fully armed. "We ride now. Astrid, you know their patterns better than most. Stay with me and call what you see." She nodded and mounted. "The old Silverfang routes again. They are using the same gaps. Someone is still feeding them." The ride was hard and fast under the dark sky. By the time they reached the stronghold the fighting was already thick. Torches lit the chaos. Rogues poured over the low walls while defenders struggled to hold the gates and the inner yard. Astrid did not wait for orders. She pointed to the tree line the moment she dismounted. "Flank group is coming from the north slope. I can see the movement in the brush. Cut them off before they reach the rear or we lose the stronghold." Rorik barked commands at once. "You three with me on the left. The rest hold the gate. Move." Astrid ran with a small team toward the slope. Her scouting eye picked the weak points instantly. She signaled two warriors left and took the right path herself. A rogue burst from the brush with a snarl. She dropped low, drove her blade up under his ribs, and kept moving without pause. "Push them back toward the open ground," she called. "Do not let them scatter into the trees. Keep the line tight." The elite warriors followed her lead without question. Years of training with Rorik’s group paid off in every step and every strike. They moved as one. Rogues fell fast. The flank attack broke and the survivors fled into the dark. Back at the main gate Darius fought like a storm, cutting down anyone who came near. When the last of the attackers turned to run, the stronghold was bloodied but still standing. Bodies littered the ground. The smell of smoke and iron hung heavy in the air. In the aftermath the wounded were carried inside. Fires were put out. Captured rogues were bound and questioned under torchlight. One of the prisoners spat blood and laughed through broken teeth. "You only delayed it. More are coming. The routes are still open. You cannot close them all." Astrid crouched in front of him. "Who is feeding you the routes? Give me a name and I may let you keep your tongue." The rogue grinned. "Someone who hates you more than he fears the Lycan King. That is all you get." Darius pulled her back gently but firmly. "We will get the name later. First we secure the walls and count our living." Hours later, after the stronghold was stable and the worst of the wounded had been treated, Darius led Astrid to a quiet upper room away from the noise. He closed the door and leaned against it, still marked with the night’s fight. "You saw the flank before anyone else," he said. "Your scouting and the training with Rorik turned the fight. Without that we would have lost the rear and then the whole stronghold." Astrid wiped blood from her sleeve. "I know how they move. I spent years reading the same forests and the same tricks. It felt natural. The elite made it possible to act on what I saw." Darius watched her carefully. "It was more than natural. It was command. The men followed you without question. That does not happen often with someone new." She met his eyes. "What is your long-term plan for this region? Tell me the truth. No more pieces. I want the full shape of it." He pushed off the door and walked closer. "I want the northern and eastern packs brought under one banner. Mine. The old treaties are weak and full of holes. The rogue problem grows because no one strong enough has claimed full control. I will claim it. The alliance with you was the first step. Your knowledge of Silverfang and your mind are the second. Together we can hold more than either of us could alone." Astrid studied him in the low light. "So this is conquest." "It is survival," Darius answered. "And power. I will not pretend otherwise. But I will share the power with the one who stands beside me. That is you. No one else." The air between them felt heavy and charged. Darius reached out and gripped her wrist, thumb pressing against her pulse. "You fought like you already belonged to this place," he said low. "I want that. Fully. In every way." Astrid did not pull away. "Then you will have it. But I have my own plans too. I will not set them aside." "Speak them." "I am accelerating the quiet work against the Silverfang elders," she said. "The ones who helped Liora. The ones who smiled while they planned my fall. I will not wait for them to grow comfortable again. The messages will turn sharper. The pressure will rise. Some of them will fall without a single open battle. I want them to feel it coming." Darius’s grip tightened slightly. "Do it. I will not stop you. Just keep it from spilling into open war before we are ready. Timing matters." "I know how to keep things quiet," she replied. "I learned from the best liars in Silverfang. They taught me well without meaning to." He gave a dark smile. "Then use what you learned. We both have debts to collect. We will collect them together." Outside the room the stronghold settled into exhausted quiet. The dead were counted and set aside. The wounded were treated as best as the healers could manage. The captured rogues waited for further questioning under heavy guard. Astrid stood with Darius in the dim light and felt the partnership harden into something stronger and more dangerous. Blood had been spilled on the ground below. Strategy had won the night. And her revenge against the elders was about to move faster than any of them expected. The outer stronghold had held. The future would demand even more blood and even sharper planning. She was ready to give both.
