The crown was not yet on her head but every wolf in the fortress already treated Astrid like the future Queen.
She stood in the war room with Darius and his captains as maps covered the long table. Rorik pointed to the northern borders.
"New reports came in this morning," Rorik said. "Rogue numbers are rising again. They are testing our lines harder than last month."
Astrid leaned over the map. "Then we do not wait. Send scouts tonight. Cut them before they grow bold. If we give them time they will dig in."
Darius watched her with quiet approval. "You speak like someone born to this seat."
"I earned the right to speak," she answered. "Power does not wait for permission. I learned that the hard way."
Later that day a messenger from the old lands arrived under heavy guard. He carried sealed letters and a small wooden box. Darius opened the box first. Inside lay the moonstone necklace Viktor had once given her and a folded note in Kieran’s hand.
Astrid read the note without emotion. "He begs me to return. He says he was wrong. He says the pack is falling apart without me. He offers apologies and promises."
Darius raised an eyebrow. "And what do you say to that?"
"I say he is late," she replied. "And I say the pack can fall. It is no longer my concern. Let them feel the weight of their own choices."
She turned the necklace over in her fingers then set it aside on the table. "There is more. These other letters prove something darker. Draven was not the only one. Some of the elders helped Liora from the start. They wanted me gone long before she arrived. They feared the vow would give an outsider real power. They planned it carefully."
Darius took the letters and scanned them one by one. "So the betrayal ran deeper than we knew. They used everyone."
"Yes," Astrid said. "They used Liora. They used my love for Kieran. They used Viktor’s favoritism against me. Every kindness was a tool to keep me useful and powerless. I was never family to them. I was a convenient story."
A rare flash of anger crossed Darius’s face. "Then they will pay. But not only for your sake."
She looked at him closely. "What do you mean by that?"
He set the letters down and met her eyes fully. "Silverfang was not the only pack that hurt my blood. Years ago my younger sister was sent there as a hostage under an old treaty. She never came home. I later learned she was treated as less than a servant. When I demanded answers Viktor’s father stalled and lied. My sister died of fever in a cold room while they looked away. I have waited a long time for a reason to settle that debt."
Astrid felt the pieces click into place. "So this alliance is also your revenge."
"It is," Darius admitted. "But it is also more. When your message reached me I saw a woman who refused to stay broken. That mattered more than any old grudge. I will not use you the way they used my sister. We stand as equals in this. Your enemies are now mine. My enemies can become yours if you choose."
She stepped closer. "I choose it. Fully. We burn the old debts together. No more half measures."
The air between them thickened. Darius reached out and brushed a strand of hair from her face. His touch was firm and possessive.
"You are not a stray anymore," he said low. "You are mine by choice and by strength. I will not share you. I will not let the past reach for you again. Anyone who tries will learn what that costs."
Astrid’s pulse jumped but she held his gaze without looking away. "And I will not be soft for anyone. Not even you. If you ever treat me as less I will walk. That is a promise."
"I would expect nothing less," he answered. "That fire is why I want you beside me. Soft queens do not last in my world."
That night Astrid trained again with Rorik’s elite under the torchlight. Her blade work had grown sharper. Faster. The warriors no longer tested her with smirks. They tested her with respect and real effort.
Rorik called a halt after a long round. "You fight like someone with unfinished business. It shows in every strike."
"I have plenty," she said, breathing hard. "But I am learning to finish it on my terms. Quiet when needed. Final when the time comes."
Rorik nodded. "Good. Keep that edge. We will need it soon."
After training she climbed the high battlements alone. The wind pulled at her cloak. Below her the fortress lights glowed like scattered stars. Beyond the walls the dark forests and mountains stretched toward a future she would shape with her own hands.
Darius joined her without a word. They stood side by side looking out over the kingdom that would soon be theirs.
"Kieran will not stop," she said after a while. "He will try to reclaim what he threw away. Or the elders will start a larger war to save face. They hate losing more than they hate me."
"Let them come," Darius replied. "We will be ready. And if war is what they choose I will make sure Silverfang remembers the cost of underestimating you. Your name will become a warning."
Astrid smiled then. It was not soft. It was sharp and full of quiet fire. "Good. I am done being the discarded one. I am done waiting for love to save me. From now on I build my own empire. And I protect it with teeth and careful plans."
Darius turned and looked at her fully. "Then we build it together. Equal. Dangerous. Unbreakable. No one takes what is ours."
She felt the truth of his words settle deep in her chest. The partnership was no longer only strategy. The dark pull between them had become something real and possessive. Something that promised both passion and power in equal measure.
Astrid placed her hands on the cold stone of the battlement and looked out once more. The girl who had dragged a dying Alpha through enemy woods was gone. In her place stood a woman who had learned to wield pain like a blade. No longer the stray. No longer the promised bride. She was the one who chose her own throne.
Somewhere far behind her the old pack still whispered her name in fear and regret. Ahead of her the night waited full of war and want and the fierce joy of becoming something greater than anyone had allowed her to be.
She did not look back.
The new empire had already begun.
