Shadows of the Old Pack

The messenger from Silverfang arrived at midday with a sealed demand that made the entire court go still. Astrid stood beside Darius in the great hall as the man knelt and held out a heavy letter. Darius took it, broke the seal, and read the words aloud for everyone to hear. "Kieran Voss claims temporary control of Silverfang after Alpha Viktor stepped back in shame. He demands the immediate return of Astrid. He calls the marriage alliance forced and unlawful. He offers safe passage if she is returned within seven days." A low murmur ran through the gathered warriors. Rorik stepped forward. "He has nerve. Does he think we will simply hand her over?" Darius folded the letter with slow care. "No. He thinks fear will work. It will not." Astrid kept her voice steady. "Let me answer him." Darius glanced at her. "Speak." She looked at the messenger. "Tell Kieran this. I left of my own free will. The alliance stands. I will not return. If he sends another demand I will treat it as a threat. That is all." The messenger swallowed hard. "He will not like that answer. He was clear about the seven days." "I do not care what he likes," Astrid said. "Leave. Take the answer back exactly as I spoke it." After the man was escorted out, Darius turned to his captains. "Double the border patrols. I want every road watched. Kieran is desperate. Desperate men make stupid moves and I will not be caught unprepared." Rorik nodded. "It will be done before nightfall. I will set the extra watches myself." That evening Astrid sat with a trusted scout named Toren in a quiet side room. She handed him three small sealed notes. "These go to three specific wolves still inside Silverfang," she said. "Men who once trained with me. Men who never liked the way the elders treated outsiders. Tell them the truth about the elders’ plot. Tell them Kieran is leading them into a war they cannot win. Plant the doubt carefully. No open calls for rebellion. Just questions that will spread on their own." Toren tucked the notes away carefully. "And if they ask who sent the message?" "Tell them a friend who still remembers loyalty," Astrid replied. "Nothing more. Move fast and stay unseen. Do not risk being caught." "Understood. I will leave before dawn." Later Darius found her on the battlements. The wind pulled at her cloak as she stared toward the distant forests that led back to Silverfang. "You are already working against him," he said. "Yes," she answered. "Kieran thinks he can demand me like property. I will make sure his own people start questioning that demand. Quiet seeds. Slow pressure. By the time he notices the damage it will already be done." Darius stood beside her. "Good. Public rejection was necessary. Quiet work will finish it. But watch the borders closely. Rogue activity has increased in the last two days. Someone is feeding them routes again." Astrid frowned. "Draven is still locked up. Liora is banished. Who else would help the rogues now?" "That is what we need to find out," Darius said. "I have men looking in every direction. Until then we stay ready and we trust no new faces near the outer lines." The next morning new reports arrived before the sun was fully up. A captain entered the war room with fresh news and a tired face. "Three small rogue bands hit the outer farms last night," he reported. "They knew exactly where the guards were thin. Two of our scouts were wounded. One farm burned to the ground. The attacks were too precise to be random." Darius’s jaw tightened. "Someone is giving them information. Find out who and bring me the name." Astrid studied the map spread across the table. "The pattern matches the old Silverfang patrol gaps. Either someone from the old pack is still talking or the information was sold before I left. These routes were the same ones Draven used." Rorik looked at her. "Can you map the old weak points for us in detail?" "I already have," she said, pulling a small sheet from her pocket. "These were the exact routes Draven leaked. If the rogues are using them again, the leak is still active somewhere." Darius took the sheet and studied it. "Then we change every patrol route tonight. No one outside this room knows the new paths. And we set traps on the old ones. If they take the bait we may catch the one feeding them." Astrid nodded. "Do it. If they walk into the traps we will have answers by morning." By midday the court was restless. Warriors spoke in low voices about the demands from Silverfang and the sudden rise in rogue attacks. Some glanced at Astrid with open curiosity. Others with caution and quiet measurement. One older captain approached her in the corridor. "Future Queen. Is it true Kieran still claims you as his?" "He can claim the moon," Astrid said. "It does not mean he will have it. Tell the others the same if they ask." The captain gave a short nod of respect and moved on without another word. That night Darius called a private meeting with only Astrid and Rorik in the smaller council room. "Kieran’s demand was public for a reason," Darius said. "He wants the region to see me as a thief who took what was not his. If enough packs believe it they may side with him out of fear or old treaties." Astrid leaned forward. "Then we make sure the truth spreads faster than his lies. I already sent the first seeds into Silverfang. More will follow. His own people will start asking why he wants a war over a woman who chose to leave. Doubt will do more damage than any army at this stage." Rorik spoke up. "And the rogues? If the attacks keep rising we will be stretched thin across too many fronts." "We will not be stretched," Darius said. "We will be ready. Astrid’s knowledge of the old routes gives us an edge no one else has. We use it fully." Astrid met his eyes. "I will not let Silverfang’s shadows reach this place. Not while I stand here. Whatever Kieran plans, we will meet it on our terms." Darius’s voice dropped lower. "I know. That is why you belong at my side. Keep doing what you are doing. The quiet work is already moving." Outside the fortress the wind carried the distant sound of howls. Somewhere beyond the mountains the old pack was moving under Kieran’s command. He was gathering what strength he had left. And someone was still feeding the rogues with information that should have died with the old plots. Astrid stood at the window of her chambers long after the meeting ended. The notes were already on their way. The traps were being set along the old routes. The public refusal had been given in clear words. The shadows of the old pack were reaching for her again. This time she would meet them with open eyes and a sharper blade.
