Chapter 1. The Lantern
The Forgotten Village Chapter 1: The Lantern The city never slept. Even at midnight, neon signs flickered across wet streets, cars hissed through puddles, and apartment windows glowed like distant stars. Millions of people lived there. Yet somehow, Mia Reyes had never felt more alone. At twenty-two, she lived on the twelfth floor of a gray apartment building. Her days blurred together—wake up, scroll through her phone, go to work, come home, repeat. She had friends online. At least, she used to. Messages became shorter. Invitations stopped coming. Conversations faded. Eventually, the only sound in her apartment was the hum of her refrigerator and the rain tapping against the glass. That evening, Mia sat on the edge of her bed staring at her phone. No new messages. No missed calls. Nothing. She opened social media. Everyone looked happy. Everyone seemed to belong somewhere. A familiar heaviness settled over her chest. It felt like carrying a stone no one else could see. Mia locked her phone and tossed it onto the blanket. Outside, rain slid down the window. For a moment, she wondered what would happen if she simply disappeared. Would anyone notice? Would anyone care? The thought scared her. Not because she wanted to disappear. But because she wasn't sure of the answer. Unable to bear the silence any longer, she grabbed her jacket and left the apartment. The rain had stopped by the time she reached the edge of the city. A narrow forest trail stretched into darkness. She had walked there before when her thoughts became too loud. The woods were quiet. Peaceful. No notifications. No expectations. Just the whisper of wind through the trees. Mia followed the trail deeper than usual. The city lights slowly vanished behind her. Soon only moonlight filtered through the branches above. Then she saw it. A light. Golden. Warm. Impossible. A lantern hung between the trees. At first she thought someone was carrying it. But there was no one there. The lantern swayed gently as if suspended by invisible hands. Mia froze. The woods were empty. Yet the lantern seemed alive. It bobbed once. Twice. Then drifted farther into the darkness. A chill ran through her. Every instinct told her to turn around. Instead, curiosity tugged at her feet. The lantern moved again. Slowly. Almost as though it wanted her to follow. "Must be a trick," she whispered. But even as she said it, she knew something wasn't right. The forest had gone silent. No insects. No birds. No rustling leaves. Nothing. Only the glow of the lantern. Mia checked her phone. No signal. The battery icon suddenly flickered before the screen went black. Dead. It had been nearly full minutes ago. Her heartbeat quickened. The lantern continued forward. For a long moment she stood perfectly still. Then, against her better judgment, she followed. The deeper she walked, the stranger the woods became. The trees seemed older. Taller. Twisted into shapes that looked almost human in the moonlight. The air grew colder. The path beneath her feet appeared where none had existed before. And every few minutes she had the unsettling feeling that someone was watching her from beyond the trees. But whenever she looked, she found only shadows. Then she noticed something carved into a tree trunk. A name. EMILY. Below it was a date. Twenty years ago. Farther ahead, another tree bore another name. JONAH. A different date. Then another. And another. Dozens of names. Each carved by different hands. Each ending abruptly. No surnames. No messages. Just names. As if they had all stopped their journeys at the exact same place. Mia's stomach tightened. Who were these people? Why were their names here? And why had she never heard of any of them? Ahead, the lantern suddenly stopped. Its golden light brightened. The trees began to thin. Beyond them, Mia saw warm lights glowing in the distance. Windows. Street lamps. Buildings. A village. Hidden deep within the forest. Impossible. No village appeared on any map of the area. Yet there it was. Alive. Waiting. The lantern hovered at the edge of the trees. As if inviting her to take one final step. Mia stared at the mysterious settlement beyond the woods. A strange feeling stirred inside her. For the first time in months, she didn't feel completely alone. And somehow, that frightened her more than the darkness ever had.
