CHAPTER ONE:SHADOWS IN THE MOONLIGHT
The air in Blackwood Valley was always cold, but tonight it held a sharp, metallic tang—the unmistakable scent of imminent rain and heavy magic. Serena Stafford stood by her bedroom window, trace patterns of frost clinging to the glass as she looked out over the endless expanse of pine forest surrounding the Bloodmoon Pack estate. Six months ago, this place had been nothing more than a rumor—a stronghold of old money, strict laws, and fierce Alpha blood. Now, it was home. Or at least, as close to a home as Serena could hope for. When her mother had passed away, Serena thought she would be left alone to navigate the fragile fringes of werewolf society. But her father’s sudden remarriage to Eleanor—a high-ranking matriarch of the Bloodmoon Pack—had dragged Serena straight into the lion's den. Downstairs, the house hummed with activity. Tomorrow night was the Midnight Solstice, the evening Serena turned eighteen. For a human, eighteen meant adulthood. For a wolf, it meant the First Shift for late bloomers—and, more importantly, the awakening of the mate bond. A quiet tap sounded at her door before Eleanor stepped in, her posture effortlessly poised in a tailored silk dress. "Serena, dear," Eleanor said softly, her blue eyes scanning the quiet room. "The Alpha Council delegates have arrived for dinner. Your father expects us all downstairs in ten minutes." "I'll be right down, Eleanor," Serena replied, giving a subtle nod. Eleanor smiled politely, though her eyes lingered on Serena's plain clothes. "Wear something dark. And... do try to keep your tail tucked around the senior warriors tonight. Tensions are running high with the Red River Pack patrolling the eastern ridge." "Understood." As Eleanor walked away, Serena let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. She smoothed down her dark velvet dress, checked her reflection, and slipped into the hallway. The main staircase overlooked the grand foyer, where towering marble columns met dark wood paneling. Voices boomed below—deep, resonant tones of pack leaders and grizzled warriors discussing border skirmishes. But as Serena began her descent, one voice stood above the rest. "If Red River crosses the river again, we don't send warnings," a cold, smooth voice commanded. "We take territory." Serena stopped mid-step. Aiden. He was standing near the grand hearth, his broad shoulders easily filling out a black suit jacket, dark hair slightly disheveled. At twenty-one, Aiden Hawke was already feared throughout the northern territories—the future Alpha of Bloodmoon, built like a warrior and possessing an aura so commanding it made weaker wolves bow their heads on instinct. He was also her stepbrother. As if sensing her presence, Aiden stopped speaking mid-sentence. His dark eyes flicked upward, locking directly onto Serena at the top of the stairs. A sudden, sharp spike of heat shot through Serena’s chest, making her heart violently hammer against her ribs. It wasn't fear—it was something far more dangerous, an unseen thread pulling her toward him. Aiden’s jaw tightened. His amber eyes flickered with a flash of inner wolf silver, intense and burning, before he forced his gaze away and returned to his conversation with the council members. Serena gripped the banister tightly, her pulse racing. For months, Aiden had kept his distance, treating her with a distant, ice-cold detachment that felt almost cruel. Yet every time they were in the same room, the atmosphere became suffocating, charged with a magnetic tension neither of them dared to acknowledge. Tomorrow night was her eighteenth birthday. The night the Moon Goddess would reveal her destiny. And as Serena took her final steps down into the dining hall, meeting Aiden's guarded gaze across the crowded room once more, a terrifying thought crossed her mind: What if her destiny was already standing right under her roof?
