Chapter 1: The Pull That Ruined Everything
Chapter 1: The Pull That Ruined Everything “Why do I always have to be the one left behind?” The words slipped from my lips in a bitter whisper as I stood barefoot in the cramped omega quarters, the distant thrum of drums vibrating through the thin wooden walls. My heart hammered against my ribs like it wanted out. Tonight was the Moonlight Festival—the one night every unmated wolf in the pack prayed for the bond to snap into place. And here I was, Elara Voss, the wolf-less omega everyone pitied, staring at my reflection in a cracked mirror. No wolf. No shift. No value. I tugged the hood of my simple gray cloak tighter around my shoulders, hiding the plain linen dress that marked me as lesser. My fingers trembled. Just watch from the edges, I told myself. One night of feeling alive. No one has to know. The decision burned in my chest as I slipped out the back door into the cool night air. Pine and wild jasmine wrapped around me, carried on the breeze from the sacred clearing. Music swelled—deep drums, flutes, laughter, and the occasional ecstatic howl as wolves danced under the full moon. My bare feet moved faster over damp grass and fallen leaves, pulse racing with every step. If they caught me, the elders would humiliate me again. But the boredom, the aching emptiness in my chest… I couldn’t take it anymore. The forest thinned, and the festival exploded into view. Lanterns strung between ancient trees cast golden light over the clearing. A massive bonfire roared at the center, sparks dancing toward the star-filled sky. Wolves in human form spun and laughed in loose circles, bodies glistening with sweat. Others prowled the edges in wolf form, silver and black coats shining under the moonlight that bathed everything in ethereal silver. The air smelled of roasted meat, sweet wine, crushed herbs, and raw, potent desire. I stayed in the shadows, back pressed against a thick oak, hood low. My skin tingled strangely. The moon felt heavier tonight, its light pressing down on me like a physical touch. I rubbed my arms, trying to ignore the warmth pooling low in my belly. Then it hit. A sharp, invisible hook yanked behind my sternum. My breath caught. The world narrowed. Across the crowded clearing, two towering figures turned toward me at the exact same second. They were identical in height and build—broad shoulders, powerful frames that screamed Alpha—but everything else screamed difference. The one on the left had dark, messy hair and sharp, hungry eyes that burned like embers. Ryker. The other had slightly longer, lighter hair that fell across a more thoughtful face, but his gaze held an intensity that made my knees weak. Ash. Both of them. Their voices cut through the music like twin thunderclaps. “Mate.” The single word left their mouths in perfect unison, deep and guttural. Power rippled outward. Their wolves roared through the pack link so loudly I felt it in my bones. The entire festival froze. Heads turned. Eyes widened. Gasps rippled through the crowd like a shockwave. “An omega?” “Wolf-less… that’s Elara Voss.” “Both Alphas? At the same time? The Moon has gone mad!” My stomach dropped. Heat flooded my face, my neck, my entire body. The pull in my chest doubled—no, tripled—two separate forces crashing into me. Ryker’s was fire and possession, demanding I submit right there. Ash’s was deeper, warmer, like molten honey wrapping around my soul and tugging gently but relentlessly. My n*****s tightened against the thin fabric of my dress. A slick warmth gathered between my thighs so suddenly I pressed them together, mortified. This can’t be happening. Not to me. I stumbled backward. Someone dropped a cup; wine spilled like blood across the grass. Elders stared open-mouthed. A few warriors growled in disbelief. Ryker took one powerful step forward, lips curling into a predatory smile that sent another bolt of unwanted heat through me. Ash’s hand shot out to grip his brother’s arm, but his eyes never left mine—dark with hunger and something softer, almost reverent. I didn’t think. I ran. My cloak whipped behind me as I bolted into the dark forest, branches slapping at my arms and face. My heart thundered in my ears. Leaves and twigs crunched under my feet. The bond screamed at me to stop, to turn around, to let them claim what the Moon had declared theirs. Every cell in my body ached with it. My skin felt too tight. My core throbbed with every pounding step. “Elara!” The roar came from behind—Ryker’s voice, rough and commanding. It vibrated straight between my legs. “Little omega, wait!” Ash called, smoother but no less urgent. I didn’t stop. Tears blurred my vision as I dodged trees, lungs burning. How could this be real? Me—an omega who couldn’t even shift—mated to the twin Alphas who ruled the entire pack? It was impossible. A cruel joke. Yet my body betrayed me with every stride. The thought of their hands on me, their mouths, their bodies pressing me between them… it made me whimper involuntarily. Heavy footfalls gained on me. Fast. Too fast. I burst into a small moonlit grove beside a trickling stream. My foot caught on a root. I tumbled forward with a cry, landing on soft moss. Before I could scramble up, powerful arms wrapped around me from behind. Ryker. His chest was a wall of heat against my back. Bare skin— he must have torn his shirt during the shift. His scent slammed into me: dark cedar, smoke, and raw male musk that made my head spin. One large hand splayed possessively across my stomach, pulling me flush against the hard ridge of his arousal. “Got you,” he growled low in my ear, lips brushing the sensitive shell. His breath was hot. “Running from your Alphas, little omega? Naughty.” I gasped as another body dropped to his knees in front of me. Ash. His hands gently cupped my face, thumbs wiping away the tears on my cheeks. His touch was softer but no less electrifying. His scent—fresh rain and pine—mingled with Ryker’s, creating something intoxicating that made my head fuzzy with need. “Shh, breathe,” Ash murmured, voice like velvet over steel. His green eyes searched mine, pupils blown wide with the same hunger I felt tearing through me. “We’ve waited our whole lives for you. Don’t be afraid.” Ryker’s hand slid lower, fingers gripping my hip hard enough to bruise in the most delicious way. “She smells so f*****g sweet when she’s scared and wet for us,” he said roughly, nose dragging along the side of my neck. He inhaled deeply and groaned. “Mine.” “Ours,” Ash corrected, but his voice had dropped an octave. He leaned in slowly, giving me time to pull away. I didn’t. His lips brushed mine once—soft, testing—then claimed me fully. The kiss was deep, slow, and devastating. His tongue traced my bottom lip until I opened for him with a broken moan. While Ash kissed me like he was savoring every second, Ryker’s mouth found the junction of my neck and shoulder. He sucked hard, teeth grazing the spot where a mark would go, sending sharp pleasure straight to my core. I arched between them, whimpering into Ash’s mouth. My hands came up instinctively—one fisting Ash’s shirt, the other reaching back to grip Ryker’s thigh. The double sensation was too much. Too perfect. Fire and honey. Dominance and devotion. My body trembled as fresh slick soaked my thighs. Ryker chuckled darkly against my skin. “Feel that? Your body already knows who it belongs to.” His hand boldly slid under the hem of my dress, fingertips brushing the sensitive skin of my inner thigh. “Soaked for your Alpha daddies already.” Ash pulled back just enough to rest his forehead against mine, breathing hard. “Ryker… easy. She’s overwhelmed.” But his own hand had moved to my waist, holding me steady while his brother teased higher. The festival music was distant now. Only the stream, our ragged breathing, and the pounding of my heart remained. The Moon watched overhead like a silent witness to my ruin. I should have been terrified. I was terrified. But Goddess help me… I wanted more.
