Chapter 1
"I’m pregnant, Sarah. And it’s your husband’s baby." I stared at her, shock freezing me in place. The crystal wine glass slipped from my fingers and shattered on the marble floor. Red wine pooled around my feet, but I barely noticed. "What did you just say?" My voice trembled, disbelief flooding my mind. Lily, my beautiful, flawless sister, stood before me, embodying everything I felt I lacked. She was graceful, charming, and every man fell at her feet. But why my husband? As she delivered this life-altering news, she looked like a goddess, with her hand protectively cradling her flat stomach and tears glimmering in her bright blue eyes. “I’m so sorry, Sarah. I never meant for it to happen,” she said, her voice a soft whisper that dripped with fake compassion. "You’re lying." I gripped the dining table until my knuckles turned white. "Jake wouldn’t do that to me. He wouldn’t." “Wouldn’t he?” Lily replied, her tone heavy with pity. “Honestly, think about it. Has he ever truly been yours?” Her words ignited a painful spark in my chest. Jake and I had been together for years, married for six months. I had finally convinced myself that we were meant to be. He was the love of my life, but now, in that moment, I felt the walls of hope crumbling around me. “He chose me,” I said, my voice rising with desperation. “At the wedding, he picked me over you.” “Did he?” Lily stepped closer, her movements graceful yet threatening. “Or did he choose the easy path, the one that lets him have us both?” “What are you talking about?” Fear curled around my heart as I tried to understand her twisted reasoning. “Think about it, Sarah. If he had married me, you would have left the city, finding a new life. But by marrying you…” She paused, letting her words seep into the air. “He ensured I’d stay close. Family doesn’t just vanish.” My legs trembled, and I sank into the nearest chair. “No. No, you’re wrong. We’ve been happy. He loves me.” “Loves you?” Lily laughed, though there was no joy in it. “Sarah, when was the last time he told you he loved you?" Her question hit like a cold wind, and I felt my heart sink. Six months as his wife, and those three words had never left his lips. “When was the last time he looked at you the way a husband should look at his wife?” she continued relentlessly. “When was the last time he came to your bed willingly?” “Stop,” I warned, tears starting to sting my eyes. This couldn’t be happening. “I can’t stop,” she said softly, making her way to the chair across from me. “Because I can’t keep lying to you. Jake has been meeting with me in secret since the week after your wedding. At first, it was just to apologize, to explain why he chose you. But then…” “But then what?” “Then we remembered why we fell in love in the first place.” My hands balled into fists as fury coursed through me. “You hated each other! After the way your lives were ruined, you couldn’t stand the sight of each other!” “We were never enemies,” Lily said quietly, her gaze dropping. “We were two hurt people pretending to be strong. The anger was easier than admitting we still cared.” I shot to my feet, the chair clattering behind me. “Get out!” “Sarah….” “I said get out!” “Listen!” She matched my fury, her voice rising. “Do you think this is easy for me? I never wanted to be pregnant with a married man’s child!” “You should have thought about that before you spread your legs for your sister’s husband, you w***e!” The slap came quicker than I anticipated. My cheek burned, but the emotional pain that tore through my chest was far worse. “Oh no, I’m sorry,” Lily gasped, covering her mouth. “I didn’t mean to…” “Yes, you did!” I touched my stinging cheek, tasting blood where my teeth had bitten my lip. “You’ve always meant it, every cruel word thrown my way. You’ve always resented that Mom and Dad chose to adopt me instead of having a brother.” “That's not true” “Isn’t it?” I laughed bitterly. “Tell me, Lily. Was sleeping with Jake always part of your plan? Ever since we got married, you’ve been howling to destroy it.” Tears fell down her perfect cheeks now. “I came here hoping to make peace with you, but when I saw Jake again…” “The feelings you crushed came rushing back?” I said with disdain, I was visibly disgusted. “Yes,” she confessed, her voice breaking. “Well, here’s something you might have forgotten in your reunion,” I snarled, letting my pent-up rage spill out. “Jake and I are actually married. He marked me. We have a bond recognized by everyone.” Lily took a step back. “Sarah…” “Which means whatever you think you have with him, whatever lies you’ve been told, you’re nothing but a mistake.” This time, I was ready for her slap. I caught her wrist before it could connect, a surge of strength coursing through my body. “Don’t,” I warned, feeling the rage stir within me. “Do not try to hit me again.” She struggled to pull away, but I held on. It felt strange, having power over her for the first time. “Let me go,” she hissed. “Not until you tell me the full truth. Why now, Lily? Why come here and confess?” Her angry mask slipped, revealing vulnerability as she stared at me. “Jake asked me to tell you.” Those words brought me to ice. “What?” “He said it wasn’t fair to keep lying to you. That you deserved to know the truth of who he really loves.” I released her wrist, and she stumbled back. “He wants a divorce.” The words clawed at my throat, choking me. “He wants you to choose,” she corrected softly. “He won’t break the bond against your will, but if you let him go…” “He’ll marry you?” “Yes.” I turned away, my heart pounding as I walked to the large windows overlooking the city. I could see the skyline where I had spent six months convincing myself I was living my dream. “And the baby?” My voice barely rose above a whisper. “He wants to claim it officially. He wants the baby to be his heir.” His heir. The child I had longed to give him, despite all our struggles. “Get out, Lily.” “Sarah, please…” “Get out before I do something we’ll both regret.” As I heard her footsteps retreat, I finally allowed the hurt to seep out. I sank to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably. My world had shattered, and I couldn't see how to piece it back together. But one thing was clear, I would never let them destroy me. Something within me flickered with determination as I realized I could fight back. What would I do next? That was the question. As I sat alone in the grand yet cold pack house, I knew my journey was just beginning. And it was going to take everything I had to regain control.
