Taka has always lived a quiet life—working part-time at a bar, caring for his ailing grandfather, and staying out of trouble. But after his grandfather’s passing, his world is turned upside down when he learns that he's bound by an old promise: an arranged marriage to the grandchild of his grandfather’s closest friend.

Expecting a traditional engagement to a young woman he’s never met, Taka is stunned when he arrives at the meeting—only to discover that his intended partner is not a woman at all, but a man. And not just any man… the future emperor of the country.

Suddenly thrust into a world of royal protocols, political scrutiny, and whispered scandal, Taka must navigate his feelings, his identity, and a relationship he never saw coming. As secrets unfold and public pressure mounts, Taka finds himself questioning whether he can survive the spotlight—or if this unexpected bond might be exactly what he’s been missing all along.

Chapter 1
Taka paced anxiously in front of the glass swinging door that led to the emergency room. With each step, his feet felt heavier, as if they couldn't bear to move forward anymore. Exhausted, he finally sat down on a nearby bench, taking deep breaths to calm himself. But his heart continued to thump painfully in his chest, a constant reminder of the fear and uncertainty that gripped him. Swallowing became as difficult as swallowing stones, and his entire body trembled uncontrollably, resembling the tremors of a patient with Parkinson's disease. In this moment of distress, even the simple act of breathing felt arduous for Taka. He found himself at a loss, unsure of how to navigate such a challenging situation. His grandfather was the sole remaining family member in his life, having lost his parents in a tragic car accident. Despite the possibility that his grandfather might be better off without the burden of caring for him, he was the only one who looked after Taka. His grandfather worked tirelessly to provide him with a better life and made countless sacrifices to ensure he could attend school. The thought of living without his grandfather was unimaginable for him, as he relied on his love and support for his very existence. Taka's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the emergency room door opening. His eyes widened as he saw a figure in a white gown being wheeled out. A surge of relief washed over him, and a smile instantly spread across his face, erasing all the worries that had consumed him. His heart skipped a beat at the sight. Without hesitation, Taka approached the nurse who was closing the door and eagerly inquired about the figure. "How is he?" he asked, his voice filled with concern. The nurse gave him a reassuring smile, adjusting the chart in her hands. “He’s stable now. The procedure went well,” she said gently. “He’s still drowsy from the anesthesia, but you can see him in a few minutes once we settle him into recovery.” Taka’s shoulders sagged with relief, the weight of hours of anxiety lifting just enough to breathe again. He glanced past the nurse toward the hallway where the gurney had disappeared, his heart aching to be by his side. “Thank you,” he murmured, barely above a whisper, his voice trembling with gratitude. He stepped back and leaned against the wall, closing his eyes briefly. The sterile scent of the hospital, the echo of rushed footsteps, the soft hum of machines—none of it mattered anymore. All that mattered was that he was okay. Alive. Safe. As the nurse walked away, Taka remained rooted to the spot, his thoughts racing. The reality of the situation slowly settled in—his grandfather, once so full of strength and wisdom, now vulnerable and in need of care. It was a sobering image, but one that stirred a quiet resolve within him. He straightened his posture and took a deep breath, steadying himself. There would be bills to manage, meals to prepare, visits to coordinate, and most importantly, time to be present. It wouldn't be easy, especially with his own work piling up, but none of that mattered now. His grandfather had been his anchor for as long as he could remember—offering guidance, support, and unconditional love. Now it was Taka's turn. With newfound determination, Taka walked toward the recovery ward, his steps firm but gentle. He didn’t have a plan yet, but he had a promise in his heart: whatever it took, he would be there. For him. Always. =============== Toru's eyes widened in disbelief as he hastily placed his coffee cup on the table, almost spilling the liquid in his mouth. "You worked three shifts in a row today?!" he exclaimed, his astonishment evident. Taka had received a request from Toru to meet before his departure to Paris the following day. Anticipating this, Taka had taken on the daunting task of covering three consecutive shifts the previous night just to make time for their meeting. Toru didn’t have to know why he did that—especially the reason behind it—as Taka had made the conscious decision not to reveal Sofu-san's situation. Being close friends, Taka knew that Toru would immediately rush to the hospital upon hearing the news. "I'm fine," Taka replied, attempting to downplay his exhaustion. "No, you're not," Toru retorted, clearly upset. Taka could sense the frustration in his voice. "Tell me—why do you need to work your ass off?" "Please watch your language," Taka gently reminded him. Toru's use of profanity was uncharacteristic—he was usually quite proper in his speech. “Shut up.” "I told you I'm fine. I just need the money," Taka insisted. "And what did I tell you about needing?" Toru shot back. "Toru," Taka began, but was sharply interrupted. "No," Toru interjected. "Sometimes I wonder if you truly consider me your friend. Friends help each other no matter what—but you don't seem to see it that way." Money wasn’t a concern for Toru. His parents managed their businesses overseas, and he knew that Toru could easily lend him some cash if he ever asked. But he didn’t want their friendship to be defined by Toru’s wealth. Toru was like family to him, and Taka didn’t want to risk damaging that bond by appearing dependent. "You know that's not it," Taka replied, his voice slightly raised, stung by Toru’s remark. He knew Toru understood—knew Taka didn’t approve of what he was implying. “Then why?” Sometimes, Taka wondered what his relationship with Toru really was. Was Toru his mother, his girlfriend, or just a friend? Because honestly, Toru nagged him like a mother scolding her son, like a girlfriend panicking because her boyfriend hadn’t called—which, to be clear, Taka didn’t want him to become—and like a friend who just wouldn’t stop. "Toru, I'm fine. You don't need to worry. I can manage," Taka reassured him. “Manage? Have you seen yourself in the mirror?” Toru shot back. Sure, Taka had lost some weight compared to before, but he didn’t care. Sofu-san was in the hospital and needed financial support for his recovery. This wasn’t the time for Taka to think about himself. That’s what he wanted to explain to Toru. But he was afraid—afraid Toru might misunderstand, might think Taka didn’t trust him enough to share the truth. And if that happened… he wasn’t sure their friendship would survive it. So instead, Taka stayed silent. "I told you I'm fine," Taka said after a long silence, fully aware that convincing Toru was like trying to move a stone—or swim against the current. Toru was smart, and Taka knew he couldn’t fool him. He sighed, already accepting that he hadn’t managed to change his mind. Still, he reached out and gently pinched the hand holding Toru's cup. "Please, just leave it to me. I’ll let you know when I truly need it." "We both know you won’t. Not in a million years. Maybe over your dead body," Toru replied, his tone laced with skepticism. He clicked his tongue and let out a dramatic sigh. "Yeah, speaking of suffering, I’m sore all over. Tried to do laundry this morning and somehow managed to break the washing machine. So who's really struggling here?" Toru chuckled in response. "You just want a good massage, don't you?" "You got me," Taka admitted with a grin, winking at him. Toru laughed, shaking his head. "So, can you lend me a hand?" Taka added, his tone teasing. Toru rolled his eyes in playful exasperation. "Unbelievable. One minute you're dying on your feet, the next you're asking for a spa day." Taka smirked, leaning back in his seat. "Hey, I never said I wasn’t strategic with my suffering." Toru snorted. “Strategic, my ass. You’re reckless and stubborn—and somehow charming enough to get away with it.” “I’ll take that as a compliment,” Taka said, raising his cup in mock salute. Toru just shook his head, the corners of his mouth twitching despite himself. “You really drive me insane sometimes, you know that?” “Only sometimes?” Taka teased, his eyes twinkling. “I must be slacking.” Toru laughed again, softer this time. The frustration he felt earlier hadn’t completely faded, but moments like this reminded him why he cared so much. Taka always had a way of deflecting the heavy with humor—but Toru could see through it. He always had. “I’m still mad at you,” Toru said, leaning forward slightly. “I know.” “And I still think you should’ve told me.” “I know,” Taka repeated, his smile fading just a little. A quiet beat passed between them, the noise of the café humming in the background. “But,” Toru continued, voice low and steady, “I’ll wait. Just… don’t shut me out completely, okay?” Taka looked at him, truly looked at him this time. “Okay.” And for now, that was enough.
