CHAPTER TWO JASMINE – POINT OF VIEW “Father, please.” I whimpered, pain tearing through my bruised heart. My father leaned against the chair, hands draped on the arms, and a bored look on his face. Carla’s mom, Midge, sat beside him, staring at her fingers as if they were more interesting than this. “Stop making a fool of yourself. Get ready. The carriage would be here soon.” She told me coldly, a vindictive look on her face. My chest caved in painfully. Heat burned through me like molten fire. My lungs constricted. I fell to the ground and grabbed my father’s foot as tears streamed down my face. “No, no, I cannot go there. You cannot push me into the lion’s den. You cannot abandon me this way. Please father. I … I can’t … I cannot be one of their breeders. I am a person. I am your daughter.” “And, this is your destiny. Go be useful for once.” He wouldn’t even look at me. “You cannot do this to me. I am your daughter.” I snarled, rage burning through me. I wiped my tears away furiously. “Oh, please shut it. You are unmarried. Carla and Silas will be married. This is an honour.” Midge barks at me, eyes blazing. “An honour?” I scoffed and slowly got up, “If this is the honour you think it is, then why don’t you send Carla there? Why have you all plotted against me for weeks, taking the one person that was truly mine? I have done everything I was supposed to do. I have kept my head down, toiled in the kitchen for years, and this is how you repay me? By throwing me to the wolves?” Her gaze burned, “You will not speak of the princes like that! They’re a cornerstone of our kingdom, and you will do your duty.” “This is not my duty!” I screamed, my voice cracking, eyes welling up, “I am made for so much more than this. I will not be a breeder!” “Enough!” Father’s voice cracked like a whip. His stone-cold gaze fixed on me. “I will not hear anything. Goodbye, Jasmine.” “Take her,” Midge added with a smile. I turned around, heart slamming hard against my ribcage, to see two palace guards storming towards me. I ran in the opposite direction immediately, doing everything to avoid this fate set out for me, but they grabbed me by my arms. I fell on the ground and dug my fingers through the dirt. Tears blurred my vision, and my shoulders shook with a sob. Still, I fought on, heart racing and lungs burning. The guards dragged me hard and threw me in the rickety carriage. I screamed as they bound my hands and feet, thrashing, kicking, doing everything I could, but they pinned me down, slamming me against the carriage. Then, they bound my mouth hard, muffling my screams. Tears flowed freely as I was taken from the only home I had ever known. The last thing I saw before the carriage turned the corner was Midge’s smile. My whole body ached. I was jostled from one corner to another as we moved towards the palace. My tears dried twenty minutes into the journey. All I was left with was the aches, dirt and bruises. I had been sold by the people supposed to protect me. Suddenly, the carriage stopped, and I was dragged out with the same force. The guard freed my hands and legs. He ripped the muzzle out of my mouth and stared at me, disgusted. “Do not try to run, or do anything stupid. You have been registered. This is where you’re supposed to be. You’re a mess already, but if you run, I will shatter your kneecap. Understood?” He seethed, digging his fingers into my arm. I nodded, tears filling my eyes again and stammered, “U … understood.” “Good.” He grinned, ran his dirty gaze over my body and pulled me forward. I had no choice but to follow him barefoot. My footwear had been lost in the scrabble. My dress was a mess. My hands were covered in dirt, and my hair felt matted. I was painfully out of place here. The palace was full of grandeur, colours, and aroma. I wasn’t meant to be here. The staff stared at me with disdain as I was dragged past. I wanted to shrink into myself and just disappear. Finally, we stopped in front of a room. He pushed the door open, and I realised it was a hall filled with women – the potential breeders. They were dressed in the prettiest dresses, hair pinned up in buns, and the stifling scent of perfumes in the air. I blinked in shock. Some of them were laughing, talking amongst each other, as … as if this was a good thing. “Stay here. Move an inch, and you know what happens.” The guards spat in my face and walked out. My skin crawled as I scooted to the nearest corner. Some of them leaned away from me as if I stank. My dress was soiled. I was covered in thick mud. I was barefoot. I understood their prejudice. “Have you ever seen one of the princes? I hear they are so handsome.” The young woman beside me asked her friend. She didn’t look a day over nineteen. Her innocence was palpable. “I don’t care what they look like. Looks do not matter to me. We are going to make something transcendent together. I don’t need all three of them, just one to love and build a family together.” Her friend responded with a giggle. I bit my cheek. The princes were monsters. I took over as a nurse for my late mother when I was old enough, and I have witnessed the aftermath of the princes’ cruelty. They were rough. They weren’t made to be loved. They were forceful creatures who took what they wanted. I refused to end up as one of their victim. My mother didn’t die for me to end up as nothing.
