Betrayal!
CHAPTER ONE
JASMINE – POINT OF VIEW
The announcement hit hard like a gunshot, crashing through the peace we had. Murmurs rang out, and the women beside me were just as bewildered as I was.
This could not be why we were assembled, right? I refused to believe it was.
“Silence!” Alpha growled coldly, his brows furrowed, and darkness in his gaze.
It was impossible to be quiet, not when he just announced that every unwed maiden would be given to the Lycan brothers, as breeders.
“But, Alpha, every woman touched by the Lycan brothers has never made it out alive.” An older woman whispered from the crowd, concern lacing her words.
“Nonsense. Those are just rumours. It will be an honour to be chosen.” He scoffed as it didn’t matter, as if her concern was just a nuisance.
He continued with a cold voice, “Each tribe under the East, West, South and North Region must select unwed she-wolves over age eighteen to be sent to the Lycan brothers as breeders. This is an honour. The Lycan brothers are a cornerstone of our Kingdom. They have given us their strength and wisdom. We owe this to them. Failure to comply or any attempts to escape this fate will be seen as an act of treason and met with my full force.” His threats settled under my skin, and sweat beaded over my forehead.
“Remember, this is an honour, and here, we must serve. We must all do our respectful duties for the good of our Kingdom.” He concluded, turned around and stormed off.
I could feel my pulse in my throat, pounding hard.
My hands trembled.
The women around me shared my distress.
“They are the worst.”
“Maybe it won’t be so bad? It would be a chance to carry the Lycan’s heir.”
“I heard they once shattered a woman’s hips from too much s*x!”
“No one has been able to have their babies!”
“Probably punishment from the Moon Goddess, a reward for their depravity.”
“Oh, no, don’t say that! They mustn’t hear you talk of the Lycan princes like that!”
On and on it went.
Their words did not soothe the fear spreading through me like ink. I knew I couldn’t be here.
So, I slipped between the crowd, pushing through carefully as I made my way home.
The Lycan brothers were monsters. They were cruel, depraved and determined to have children. They treated women like objects. I always thought this breeding ceremony was a myth, yet here I was, standing on the threshold of the end.
I was safe, though. I had a boyfriend. Silas and I had been together since we were kids. We were a perfect storybook love story. He wouldn’t want me to fall into this horrendous fate. All we had to do was get married and finally be together. We had been dating for a while now, and marriage was a perfect next step.
I had someone who loved me enough to save me from this horrendous fate.
I made my way to my father’s home. The sun shone high in the sky, and sweat trickled down my back, but I was too excited to feel the discomfort.
I knew I couldn’t go to him like this, all sweaty and messy, so I rushed home, washed and changed into a pretty red dress. My stepsister was nowhere to be found, and I didn’t look for her. I had no time for her attitude right now. All she would do was rain on my parade. I packed my hair in a bun and made my way to Silas’s home. A home that would soon be ours.
He didn’t know I was coming, and I doubt he had heard about the Alpha’s decree. He would still be asleep. He worked nights and slept during the day.
I pushed open the door and stepped in with a smile.
Then, I heard a noise. A female’s voice from his bedroom.
I frowned, wondering if it was from the neighbour’s. Silas should be asleep. Why would a woman be in his bedroom? It had to be nothing.
I walked further into his house, found the bedroom door ajar, and my heart dropped.
He wasn’t alone.
A woman was straddling him, with his hand on her hips. She had fiery red hair, and for a second, she almost seemed familiar.
My blood turned to ice, and my pulse slowed.
I pushed the door open further and took in the sight in front of me.
Silas, indeed, wasn’t alone.
My bitchy stepsister, Carla, was with him. On him.
My mouth parted in shock. My eyes stung with tears.
I sniffed, heart shattering to the ground.
Then, they noticed me.
Silas’s eyes went wide when he saw me. He scrambled up, shoving her off him.
“J … Jas … Jasmine, this is not what it looks like.” He murmured, rushing towards me.
I stepped backwards, my head pounding as my whole body ached.
“What does it look like? What are you doing with her?” I demanded, blinking away tears from my eyes.
Carla scoffed, placed her hand on his chest and glared at me, “It is exactly how it looks, Jasmine. It is about time you figured it out. You have been an oblivious bimbo all this time, and I am glad we don’t have to sneak around anymore. Silas belongs to me, and you …” She paused, a grin on her face, “you belong in one of those s*x dens, serving the lycan princes. You would be dead in a week from what I hear, and I will be here, married and safe.”
Her words pulled the ground from under my feet.
“No!” I whispered, horrified, eyes burning with tears.
“Yes, sister,” she spat out the last word like it’s a slur, a triumphant look on her face. “You’re unwed, hence the perfect candidate, while I have been engaged to your boyfriend for weeks now.”
“No, no, Dad won’t allow this.” I shook my head, unable to believe it.
She giggled, “Dad already knows. All roads lead to the Lycan brothers, Jasmine. Embrace your fate.”
