Marshal sniffed the air around us. I smiled at my old friend. I had to get in here before my wife to let him know that she didn’t know about us. He had been talking about Dawn and her new beloved. I guess she was on the vampire council with him. She had just been mated to an alpha I had met a long time ago.
“My wife doesn’t know about us.”
He jerked his head toward me, “what?”
“Yeah she isn’t a wolf and I left pack life awhile back when you okayed it. So I just never really had it come up.”
Marshal laughed as if what I had said was hilarious. “How did you mark your mate and her you?”
I had chuckled nervously, “she’s a biter. I just told her I was too. It actually is really nice, because now she lets me bite my mark all the time.”
Marshal gave me a curious grin, “hmmm and what about shifting?”
“Time with the boys. I mean it’s not a lie my old pack is near and since I technically am still apart of the pack they let me run with them.” I sighed, “I didn’t want the issue of being considered rogue. The new alpha understood and willingly let me come and go as I pleased. Ever since that incident where someone tried to attack my mate. I just didn’t want her around that mess.”
“Hmm. Well how do you feel about vampires?”
My family hated vampires and so did my old pack. I had been conditioned to hate them as well, but had never met one. I honestly couldn’t pin point the scent even if I did. I mean I don’t know if I would blindly kill them, but maybe I would rough them up a bit. I noticed Marshal staring at me as I thought about it.
“I mean you know my pack and family. I have always hated them. I’ve never met one though. I think that I would be okay around Dawn since she isn’t a blood sucker.”
Marshal laughed nervously, “well okay then. So if you found out your mate had been one?”
I laughed out loud. “Yeah I mean she isn’t so no problem there. If that were the case, I probably would of rejected her.”
“Maybe it would of helped your pack in the past though.”
He was confusing me with all of his walk around and talk of vampires. Sure his business partners was one, but that didn’t make sense with his overbearing interest in my mate. I laughed at the idea of my mate not being human. Surely I would notice something like that.
“I mean why does it matter now. I gave up my title for my mate and we live like humans.”
Marshal looks deeply at me, “what will happen when you have kids?”
I look at my hands, “she is sterile.”
“Maybe she couldn’t have a child without a mate.”
Something was turning in Marshal’s head, “I don’t know I guess we could try. I just don’t want to get hopes up about something like that. I mean that was part of the reason I left. You know the werewolf community puts a lot into reproduction. It’s not like it can’t happen with how often we are together.”
We stood and walked to my wife’s office. All the stuff that Marshal said made me anxious. If I don’t tell my wife about this world, a vampire could change her or someone would kill her. I don’t know if I could adapt to that type of life. I am making the decision to tell her. Maybe she wouldn’t hate me.
“Well let’s talk business.”
I smelled blood as I entered the room. I looked to Sybil and smiled. I knew that Dawn was an empathic so there shouldn’t be blood here. I knew my wife didn’t have a period, she said it was because of the infertility. I couldn’t place where the smell was coming from. I knew it wasn’t Sybil’s, I knew her blood’s smell from the attack.
“Do you smell something?”
Dawn looked to Sybil. “What do you think you smell?”
“Something metallic.”
I looked at Dawn. She had to be the source of the blood. Why would there be blood in here unless it was, because of a vampire. Sybil wouldn’t meet my gaze. I willed her with dominance and she looked up anger. Not at me, but at Marshal. I had never forced dominance on her before. She gave a quick look at me and looked at Dawn.
“Weird. I don’t smell anything.”
Dawn smiled at Marshal, “well this has taken an interesting turn.”
Marshal looked at her in warning, “don’t.”
She gave a look of defiance. “So I hear you like biting.”
I gave a look to Sybil, who seemed to whisper something. I couldn’t hear. She met my gaze and it held fear. I may not of understood what was happening, I knew she was making my mate upset. I let out a growl and instantly clamped my jaw shut in awareness. Sybil looked at Marshal as if the sound came from him.
“This is getting too good!”
Marshal smirked at Dawn, “Alarick is a bad influence on you.”
