“How long...?” She didn’t finish the question. The words stuck in her throat, their weight too much to bear. Milo just looked at her, offering no answers, only the truth that hung between them like a heavy, invisible thread. She pressed harder against her side, her fingers trembling as they searched for any lump or irregularity. The idea of something foreign under her skin made her feel sick. Her mind conjured up visions of them cutting into her while she lay helpless, unaware.
