Prologue
Anyone can love; whether a human or not, werewolves, aliens, vampires or others. The only permanent thing each one of us has is the ability to love. So, I asked him this: “Mr. Wolf, can you be my boyfriend?” It took me a whole minute for my mouth to voiced that; even though my heart was beating loudly, my mind still couldn't take it. My stomach did a flipped when a pair of cold amber eyes gazed at me, his face structured as if a question mark was going to sprout on top. He might not have believed it, I mean— who would? Ask the most feared man in town that they thought only existed in the dark ages but became real, so you asked him to be your boyfriend? That’s too much imagination, its so far from reality, but that’s my reality. As a girl nearing her eighteenth birthday, on her last year in senior, I decided not to take what the cruel things this world had for me, I concluded that I deserved more than cruelty, I live in this world for so long I wanted to get my prize. My reality includes things a normal high school girl would never experience. I learned life the hard way. I tasted raw eggs and flour in the morning, cried in one of the bathroom stalls while hoping the stain would be washed away together with my tears. Have my seat in the class doodled or taken away, or have my lunch in a janitor’s closet instead of the cafeteria. . . But if I’m going to choose the worst, that would be the blood stain on my uniform. I got that because my head was purposefully hit by a baseball bat one time in our PE class. I didn’t go to the infirmary as I was instructed, instead, I went straight to the bathroom because if I let the nurse know about my bloody nose, she’d call my parents and my parents would know what was happening at school, they would know that the whole class looked at me like some piece of rotten apple that should be thrown on the trash– they bullied me and my parents would’ve sued the whole class. But I’m not that cruel, even if that’s the right thing to do, there’s someone, I know, beyond the whole class, there’s someone out there who doesn’t look at me like a rotten apple. “I’m sorry,” Michael murmured and gave me his black handkerchief neatly folded in a small square. I didn’t know how that would help me clean my face full of flour and eggs from our classmates who saw me like I should eat pancake for breakfast, but I accepted it and his chubby cheeks rose up a little. “I don’t understand why they do this to you,” he said. It’s fine by me, his handkerchief looked so elegant to be smudged with flour though, but Michael Summers was that one boy who helped me despite the whole class saying and doing bad things about me. They looked at me like a piece of gross thing but Michael’s eyes were full of admiration whenever he put his eyes on me. He’s a nerdy boy though, he’s a little overweight on the side and likes calligraphy and playing piano. Michael Summers had a freckle on his cheeks and nose but had a sunny smile with a dimple that makes anyone’s face shine bright when they see him. He was the golden boy. But I guess he looked like he could jive on my loser face and so our classmates let him and sometimes he watched me as they kicked me down to the floor. Running around the woods was my escape. One time as I was walking down the woods, there was a voice that summoned me to find a big castle surrounded by a rose garden and daffodils around. It was the voice from behind me that told me the whispers of the school’ a legend that travels from mouth to mouth. When the moon shines so bright, the only man living in that huge mansion showed up on the balcony gazing at the moon with his deep blue eyes and howling as he shapeshifts from his wolf form and gets ready to attack whatever his eyes catches. The legends of wolves and other creatures living in our town were common, but that was years ago. They never really saw one, so I believe those were dead as those legends were. But that thought of mine got cancelled when the day ended because on the night of a full moon, I saw him – the legendary wolf.
