PROLOGUE
I bolted upright, gasping, as gunfire echoes faded. Sweat-drenched and heart racing, I scanned my darkened room. The nightmare lingered, but instinct screamed: This time, it's real.
Grabbing the pistol beneath my pillow, I rushed to the window. A black-clad figure loomed, gun aimed at my head. I raised my pistol, aimed, and fired. The loud bang echoed through my room.
Outside, a lifeless body slumped. Sister May burst in, worried. "Valentina, what happened? I heard gunfire! Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, Sister May," I reassured, hiding my trembling hands.
Her worried eyes scanned me for injuries. "No wounds, thank goodness." She paused, studying me. "Valentina, what's going on? Who's after you?"
I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "Some loan sharks," I lied, hiding the truth. "They're after me."
Sister May's expression turned stern. "You can't stay here. It's not safe." She handed me a small bag. "Take this. It's some money and a phone. Go to the safe house. I'll contact Father Miguel."
I nodded, knowing I had to vanish.
Five years ago, Sister May found me on the streets, dirty, hungry, and alone. She took me in, fed me, and gave me a home. Now, I was putting her and the others in danger.
Packing my backpack, I faced Sister May. "I must go now."
"Wait until morning," she pleaded. "It's safer."
But I knew I had to disappear.
Glancing around the room, I remembered laughter, tears, and late-night conversations. I whispered, "Thank you, Sister May."
Out of the orphanage, I spotted a tailing car. My heart racing, I sped away into the darkness.
I sped through the deserted streets, the tailing car closing in. My heart pounded as I navigated sharp turns. Suddenly, the pursuers' car swerved, blocking my path. I slammed the brakes, narrowly avoiding collision.
Two masked men leapt out, guns drawn. I reversed, tires screeching, and sped away. Bullets whizzed past my window. I zigzagged through alleys, losing them momentarily.
I pulled into an abandoned garage, catching my breath. My phone buzzed: Sister May's text. "Valentina, Father Miguel expects you. Safe house address: 1456 Elm St. Be cautious."
Who hired these killers? Why did they want me dead? Memories of my past swirled, but answers eluded me.
Starting the engine, I navigated through shadows, vigilant for pursuers.
I arrived at 1456 Elm St., a nondescript building with faded paint. Father Miguel, a wise-eyed priest, welcomed me warmly. "Valentina, child, you're safe now."
The safe house hummed with gentle activity: soft whispers, clinking dishes. I felt temporary solace.
"Valentina, what's happening?" he asked, guiding me to a cozy room. "Sister May mentioned loan sharks, but I sense more."
Memories flooded my mind: my mother's death, the orphanage, Sister May's kindness. But dark gaps remained.
Father Miguel's gentle probing uncovered a shocking revelation: "My mother wasn't who I thought she was."
"Your mother was involved with powerful people," Father Miguel hinted. "People who'll stop at nothing."
Who was my mother, really? Why did her secrets put me in danger?
Father Miguel's words echoed: "Your mother's secrets put you in grave danger, Valentina." I pressed him for answers.
"Be cautious of the Order," he whispered.
"They'll manipulate, deceive—anything to achieve their goals."
Shivers ran down my spine. What was this Order? Why did they want me?
Suddenly, a knock at the door interrupted us. Father Miguel's expression turned uneasy. "Expecting someone?" I asked.
A hooded figure entered, eyes locked on me. "Valentina, I'm here to protect you." Their voice sent shivers down my spine.
Could I trust this stranger? Or were they part of the Order?
The hooded figure stepped forward, revealing piercing green eyes. "My name is Elijah. I've been tracking the Order's movements."
Elijah's words were laced with conviction, yet I sensed underlying secrets.
"Why help me?" I asked, wary.
Elijah's gaze intensified. "Your mother was a key witness against the Order. They silenced her. Now, they're after you."
Father Miguel nodded gravely. "Valentina, your mother uncovered the Order's human trafficking ring. You're the only living witness."
Elijah handed me a folder containing cryptic documents. "We must expose the Order before they find you."
Elijah and I pored over the documents, unraveling the Order's intricate network. Father Miguel watched, his expression grim.
"We're dealing with powerful individuals," Elijah warned. "Politicians, businessmen, and law enforcement – all compromised."
Human trafficking, money laundering, and corruption – the Order's tentacles reached far.
I gasped, recognizing a name: Victor Vex, a prominent businessman and politician. "He's the one who killed my mother."
"We need concrete evidence," Elijah said. "I have contacts within the Order. Meet me at the old warehouse at midnight."
As I agreed, a faint creaking echoed outside. Father Miguel's eyes locked onto mine. "It seems they've found us."
Father Miguel swiftly ushered us into a hidden room. Heavy footsteps and muffled voices filled the hallway. Elijah drew his gun, positioning himself defensively.
The door creaked open. Victor Vex stood smiling, flanked by armed guards. "Valentina, you're quite resourceful," he said, eyes glinting.
Father Miguel stepped forward, shielding me. "Take me, Victor. Leave Valentina alone."
Vex sneered. "You're no use to me, priest."
Elijah fired, taking down guards. "Valentina, run!" he yelled.
I sprinted through the hidden passage, Elijah covering my back. Bullets whizzed past us.
We emerged into a dimly lit alley, panting. Elijah grasped my arm, pulling me into a sprint. "We need to disappear."
We weaved through crowded market stalls, dodging vendors. Victor Vex's men closed in.
A young woman, Lena, grabbed my hand, yanking me into a hidden doorway. "Follow me!" Elijah trailed, gun still drawn.
Lena led us to an underground bunker. "You're safe here," she said, eyes locked on Elijah.
Who was Lena? How did she know Elijah? And what lay ahead?
Lena's bunker hummed with surveillance equipment. Elijah's gaze roamed the room, assessing.
"Lena's my sister," Elijah said, eyes softening. "She helps me infiltrate the Order."
Victor Vex's voice echoed through the comms system. "Elijah, you're a traitor. Surrender Valentina."
Elijah handed me a encrypted phone. "Contact 'Nova' for extraction. We'll take down Vex together."
A hooded figure appeared on-screen. "Valentina, I've been waiting. Meet me at Warehouse 13."
Lena's eyes widened. "Warehouse 13's an Order hub. We're walking into a trap."
