Chapter 5: The After-Hours Grind

667 Words
The faculty lounge had long since emptied out, the rest of the teachers packing up their bags and heading home as the evening shadows lengthened across the school compound. But in classroom 4B, the lights were still blazing. Amina stood at the front of the chalkboard, the sharp squeak of chalk filling the quiet room as she mapped out a complex algebraic matrix. Behind the desks sat five exhausted yet fiercely determined students—her handpicked team for the upcoming inter-school decathlon. "If you rely solely on standard factorization here, you're going to burn through critical minutes," Amina explained, turning back to face the class, wiping a speck of white dust from her hands. "Look for the symmetric property first. It cuts the calculation time in half." Femi, a brilliant grade 11 student whose spectacles kept sliding down the bridge of his nose, squinted at the board before his face lit up with understanding. "Ah, because the coefficients mirror each other across the diagonal axes. That makes the entire expansion redundant!" "Exactly," Amina smiled, a rare wave of pride softening her tired features. "Keep that shortcut in your back pocket for the speed round." Just as she turned back to write a practice problem, the heavy wooden door of the classroom clicked open. Amina stiffened, her hand freezing mid-stroke. Standing in the doorway, hands buried deep in the pockets of his tailored trousers, was Dr. Zayyad Aliyu. The hallway lights cast long shadows behind him, highlighting the imposing, severe silhouette of the man who held her professional fate in his hands. The students instantly fell dead silent, posture snapping straight with a mix of awe and sheer intimidation. Zayyad’s dark eyes swept over the crowded desks, the scribbled blackboards, and the empty takeaway food packs scattered in the corner—evidence of hours spent working past sunset. He finally looked at Amina, his expression unreadable. "Working overtime, Teacher Amina?" Zayyad’s rich, low voice broke the silence, echoing softly in the empty classroom. "Or are you cramming because you realize how far out of your depth you actually are?" Amina set the chalk down slowly, wiping her palms on her skirt. She stepped away from the board, meeting his gaze with unyielding defiance. "We're not cramming, Dr. Aliyu. We're preparing," Amina replied smoothly, walking down the aisle until she stood just a few feet away from him near the doorway. "Some of us prefer actual preparation over corporate intimidation tactics." Zayyad didn't blink. A muscle twitched tightly along his jawline, the only sign that her sharp tongue had hit its mark. He lowered his voice so the students couldn't catch every word, stepping just a fraction closer to her. "Dedication is admirable, Amina. But results are what matter," Zayyad murmured, his gaze dropping briefly to the tired dark circles under her eyes before flashing back up to her fierce expression. "It’s past seven o'clock. If your team burns out before the preliminary rounds next week, your passion won't save your department's budget." "We won't burn out," Amina shot back, her chin lifting defiantly. "And you might want to clear some space in your schedule next week. You’re going to have to sign off on that funding whether you like it or not." For a long second, the air between them grew thick, charged with an undeniable, electric friction. Zayyad stared down at her, a strange glint of reluctant respect flashing in his deep, dark eyes before his mask of absolute composure slammed back into place. "We shall see," Zayyad whispered. He turned sharply on his heel, his dark coat billowing slightly as he walked out into the corridor, leaving the scent of cedar and rain lingering in his wake. Amina let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding, her heart hammering against her ribs. She turned back to her students, whose wide eyes were fixed entirely on her. "Alright," Amina said, clapping her hands together to break the spell. "Ten-minute break is over. Let's tackle logarithms."
