Chapter 1: The First Clash
Chapter 1: The First Clash
The digital clock on the staff room wall blinked mockingly: 7:55 AM. Five minutes before the morning assembly, and the school’s main printer had decided to choose violence, choking on a stack of midterm examination papers and spitting out a shredded, jammed mess.
"Come on, work," Amina muttered, aggressively tapping the control panel of the ancient machine while trying to keep her breathing steady.
Her younger brother’s medical bills depended on her keeping this teaching position, and minor setbacks felt like towering disasters lately. Between the constant pressure from the school administration and the sheer exhaustion of pulling double shifts, her patience was wearing dangerously thin.
"If you kick it, it usually breaks the fuser gear entirely. Though, judging by your technique, you probably prefer a dramatic breakdown over a functional one."
The voice was low, rich, and dripping with an effortless, biting arrogance.
Amina froze, her hands hovering over the jammed tray. She turned her head sharply, locking eyes with a man leaning casually against the doorframe. He was tall, dressed in a sharply tailored charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place in the dusty, paper-cluttered faculty lounge. A silver Rolex caught the fluorescent light as he crossed his arms, his dark gaze sweeping over her with cool amusement.
Amina’s temper, already dangling by a thread, snapped.
"If you're here to use the printer, grab a wrench," she shot back, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. "If you're here to offer unsolicited critique while looking like you just stepped off a billboard, find another audience. Some of us actually have jobs to do before the bell rings."
The man didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, dangerous smile touched the corners of his lips. He stepped into the room, closing the distance between them with unnerving confidence.
"Is that how you normally address your superiors, Teacher Amina?" he asked smoothly, his voice dropping an octave as he stopped inches away from her.
Amina’s stomach plummeted. Her brain stalled. Superiors?
Before she could form a single word of defense, the heavy double doors of the lounge swung open, and the principal rushed in, panting and bowing slightly toward the man in the suit.
"Dr. Aliyu!" the principal gasped, wiping sweat from his forehead. "We weren't expecting you to audit the staff wing until nine o'clock! Welcome to the academy."
Amina stopped breathing. The man standing right in front of her—the one she had just aggressively snapped at and insulted—was Dr. Zayyad Aliyu, the ruthless, newly appointed director of academic affairs who held absolute veto power over every single contract in the building.
And as Dr. Aliyu turned his slow, piercing gaze back down to her pale face, his smile vanished, replaced by a cold, challenging glint.
"Well, Principal," Dr. Aliyu said softly, never breaking eye contact with Amina. "It seems my first morning here is going to be far more entertaining than I anticipated."
