Chapter 7: The Turning Point

580 Words
The second round of the decathlon was designed to break spirits. While the speed-calculation round tested raw reflexes, the multi-variable problem-solving section demanded deep, agonizing endurance. The overhead projector flickered, displaying a complex calculus and matrix optimization problem that caused half the auditorium to groan in unison. St. Jude’s team immediately dove into traditional, long-form expansions, their pencils scratching furiously against the paper as sweat beaded on their lead competitor's forehead. Down at the Excel Model College table, Femi stared at the board for a full thirty seconds without writing a single line. In the gallery, the regional board administrator scoffed softly, shaking his head. "Looks like your teacher's shortcuts finally hit a wall, Dr. Aliyu. That problem requires at least four pages of manual derivation." Zayyad did not reply. His gaze was locked entirely on Amina, who stood near the edge of the floor. She hadn't flinched; her expression was an anchor of absolute calm. She simply raised two fingers and tapped her temple—the exact signal they had practiced for spatial matrix reduction. Femi’s eyes suddenly cleared. He took a breath, discarded the long-form approach entirely, and began applying the symmetric matrix property Amina had drilled into him the night before. His pencil moved with fluid, blinding speed, cutting through four pages of derivation down to a single, elegant equation. Buzz. The harsh sound cut through the murmuring hall. Every head snapped toward the back row. "Excel Model College," the proctor’s voice echoed over the PA system, dripping with surprise. "Proceed with your answer." Femi stood up, his voice steady and clear as he recited the minimized matrix solution and the final verified value. A stunned silence blanketed the auditorium for three agonizing seconds before the judges exchanged rapid whispers. "Correct," the head judge announced. A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Jumoke leaped out of her seat in the spectator gallery, clapping wildly, completely unbothered by the disapproving glares of St. Jude's faculty members. High above in the VIP box, Zayyad Aliyu stared down at the floor. The cold, unyielding mask he always wore fractured entirely, replaced by a slow, genuine smile that reached his dark eyes for the very first time. She had done it. She had beaten their bloated budgets and elitist advantages with pure, unadulterated brilliance. The final scores flashed on the big screen moments later: Excel Model College had clinched a stunning victory, surging into the regional finals. As the competitors packed up their gear down on the floor, Amina let out a shaky, triumphant breath, her shoulders finally dropping from their tense posture. But before she could turn to congratulate her students, a shadow fell over her table. She looked up to find Dr. Zayyad Aliyu standing right there, having descended from the VIP gallery. The noise of the crowded hall seemed to fade into a distant hum as his dark, intense gaze locked onto hers. "You proved your point, Teacher Amina," Zayyad said, his voice low, rich, and laced with a quiet, undeniable respect. Amina met his gaze, her chin lifting with that same fierce, unyielding pride that had started it all. "I told you, Dr. Aliyu. We don't run on excuses. We run on results." For a long, charged second, neither of them looked away. The professional boundaries blurred, leaving only the electric tension of two fierce minds recognizing their match.
