chapter 8

The sun had long disappeared, leaving the forest outside shrouded in darkness. Luna and Kael moved silently through the dense trees, the faint glow of the curse pulsating between them like a heartbeat. “This place…” Luna whispered, voice tense. “It feels alive.” Kael’s eyes scanned the shadows around them, muscles tensed. “It is alive,” he said quietly. “And it’s watching us.” Her pulse quickened. “Watching us? Kael, are you serious?” He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stopped, crouching slightly, ears alert, eyes narrowing as he sensed movement. “Enemies,” he muttered. Her stomach clenched. “Already?” He nodded, dark gaze fixed on the shadows. “Hunters,” he said. “They’ve been tracking us since the moment the curse reacted to you.” Luna’s eyes widened. “Hunters? Why me?” “Because of what you are,” he said grimly. “The curse… it reacts to your blood. They want to control it. Or destroy it. And if they can’t reach me… they’ll reach you.” Fear prickled down her spine, but she didn’t move back. “I’m not running,” she said firmly. Kael’s gaze softened slightly, but the tension remained. “You don’t understand what’s coming,” he said. “This is just the beginning. If they find us…” He didn’t finish the sentence. Luna swallowed, feeling the gravity of his words. The forest was suddenly alive with movement. Shadows shifted unnaturally fast, and the faint whisper of footsteps reached their ears. Kael’s eyes darkened. “They’re close,” he said, voice low. “Stay behind me.” Luna nodded, heart pounding, as he drew a dagger from his belt. The blade glinted faintly in the moonlight. A shadow lunged from the trees. Kael moved instantly, a blur of motion. The hunter crashed into him, but Kael twisted, slashing with precision. The dagger found its mark, and the intruder fell silently to the ground. Another shadow emerged. And then another. Luna froze, feeling the pulse of the curse intensify. Every beat of her heart sent waves of energy through them both, strengthening Kael, but also making the danger… closer. Kael fought with lethal grace, movements fluid, almost predatory. But there were too many. Luna felt a sudden surge of energy within her, a force she didn’t understand, but instinctively reacted to. She stretched out her hands, and a faint light pulsed from her palms. The hunters froze, recoiling. Kael’s eyes widened. “What—what are you doing?” he shouted over the chaos. “I don’t know!” she cried, heart racing. “It just… came out!” The light expanded, surrounding them both. The hunters stumbled, disoriented, some fleeing, others frozen in place. Kael’s gaze softened, awe mixed with concern. “You’re stronger than I thought,” he said, voice low. “The curse… it’s responding to you.” Her chest heaved. “I didn’t mean to—” “You did exactly what was needed,” he interrupted, moving closer to her. “But we’re not safe yet.” Luna nodded, feeling a strange warmth as the energy pulsed between them. Kael grabbed her hand, pulling her close. “We have to move,” he said, voice urgent. “Now.” They ran through the forest, the shadows behind them shifting, whispering threats they couldn’t hear. And yet… Every step, every heartbeat, every pulse of energy, tied them closer together. Bound by fate. Bound by the curse. Bound by something… undeniable. Luna’s thoughts were a whirlwind—fear, awe, and a strange, intoxicating pull toward Kael. He glanced at her as they ran. “You’re scared,” he said softly. “Yes,” she admitted. “But… I’m not leaving you.” He exhaled, a brief moment of relief passing over his face. “Good,” he said. “Because if we survive this… we’ll need to trust each other completely. No secrets. No lies. Just… us.” Her heartbeat quickened. “Us,” she echoed softly. The shadows loomed closer again, and Kael’s hand tightened on hers. “Stay close,” he warned. And in that moment… Luna realized she already was. Too close to escape. Too close to resist.
