chapter 10

The forest was silent now, but Luna felt the weight of unseen eyes pressing down on them. Kael’s hand remained lightly on her waist, his dark gaze scanning the shadows. Every instinct he had screamed danger, but he didn’t let go of her. “We’re not alone,” he whispered, voice low. Luna’s pulse quickened. “Again?” she murmured, tension tightening her chest. Kael didn’t answer. Instead, he crouched slightly, senses sharp, muscles coiled like a predator. Then—movement. A figure emerged from the darkness, cloaked, silent, deadly. Kael’s eyes narrowed. “Hunter,” he muttered. The figure raised a hand, black energy curling around it, the faint glow of the curse pulsing in response. Luna froze, recognizing the danger immediately. “That’s… it’s different,” she whispered, heart hammering. Kael’s gaze darkened. “They’re stronger. They’ve trained for this moment. And they know about the bond.” The hunter lunged. Kael moved like lightning, dagger flashing, but the figure was fast, dodging easily, countering with bursts of dark energy. Luna’s instincts screamed. She stretched out her hands again, feeling the familiar pulse of energy inside her. The moment her palms glowed, Kael’s eyes widened. “You’re ready,” he said, voice low, tense. The hunter swung again, this time aiming for Luna. Without thinking, she raised her hands, and a barrier of light shot up, deflecting the attack. The energy surged between them, pulsing, alive, and Kael realized something terrifying. “She’s not just reacting,” he muttered. “She’s controlling it.” The hunter hissed, retreating a step, surprised. Kael moved closer to Luna, protective and commanding. “Stay behind me,” he said, but she shook her head. “I’m not hiding,” she said firmly. “We’re in this together.” He exhaled sharply, realizing she meant it. The hunter lunged again, faster this time. Kael and Luna moved in perfect sync, instinct and bond guiding them. Every pulse of the curse, every beat of their hearts, worked together—powerful, dangerous, unstoppable. And then—Kael caught her gaze. “Listen to me,” he said urgently. “The curse will amplify your power—but you have to control it. Focus on me, not the fear.” Her breath hitched, but she nodded. The hunter attacked again, and this time, Luna stepped forward, letting the energy flow freely, controlling it with a focus she didn’t know she had. The hunter screamed, the dark energy unable to withstand her power. Kael struck simultaneously, dagger piercing the hunter’s chest. The figure collapsed, defeated. For a moment, silence returned. Luna’s chest heaved, sweat dripping down her temples. Kael reached for her, pulling her close, dark eyes searching hers. “You… you’re incredible,” he whispered, voice rough with awe and something more—something deeper. She looked up, breathless, heart racing. “We… survived,” she said softly. “Yes,” he replied, but his gaze lingered on her, intense, filled with desire and something unspoken. Slowly, he leaned down, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You don’t understand what you are,” he murmured. “The curse… it reacts to you, trusts you, binds us together. And I… I can’t stop feeling this pull toward you.” Her heart skipped violently. “I feel it too,” she whispered. His lips brushed hers—softly at first, a question. Her hands went to his chest, clutching him as the kiss deepened, urgent, consuming, dangerous. Every pulse of energy, every beat of the curse, every breath between them, pulled them closer. Closer than either had ever been. Too close to resist. Too close to survive without surrendering. When they finally broke apart, breaths heavy, foreheads pressed together, Kael whispered: “We’re bound… by the curse, by fate… and by each other. And nothing… nothing will change that.” Her pulse raced. “I know,” she whispered. And for the first time, Luna realized—she didn’t want it to.
