Regretfully she turned away, finished with her melancholy experiment. Could she find a way back to her camp on the mountainside? This time she envisioned her shelter, the skyline with mountains, and her pack full of magical items awaiting her return. It would still be dark, she was sure, and cold, with snow threatening. Then she invoked the memory of the deer and leaped into the imagery. With relief, she landed at the foot of her tent and found nothing had changed; no disturbance because of her midnight wandering. Tanzaa smiled shyly, for she now possessed a magical form of travel. The deer had become her symbol, she thought as she climbed gratefully back into her bed. She no longer felt that the deer might be a helpless, fidgety avatar, but a swift and clever guide to her work as a magic
